What a wonderful article and wonderful list of authors! Praise God!
ReplyDeleteBut you might want to reconsider Sungenis. He wrote some good things years ago but is not a trustworthy source any longer.
Also, it is not really befitting to call him "doctor". It isn't a legitimate doctorate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Sungenis
God bless you!
Thank you very much for your valuable input concerning the list of authors.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with you that Robert Sungenis is suspect nowadays because of his geocentrism, anti-Jewish views, etc. However, Totus Bookstore is selling only those books that he had written before these controversies and considered excellent defense of the faith such as NOT BY FAITH ALONE [on Justification], NOT BY SCRIPTURE ALONE [0n Scriptures and Apostolic Tradition] and NOT BY BREAD ALONE [on Holy Eucharist].
Concerning his Doctorate I think it is really questionable. I used the title Doctor because I used to see it in some of his articles. But I will correct that one.
Just like Tertullian and Origen before him Bob Sungenis is dear still in the heart of many Catholics not because we support his mistakes today. It is in honor of the Bob Sungenis whose conversion story touched our hearts and that same Bob Sungenis explained the faith beautifully in Catholic Answers live and still the same Bob Sungenis who demolished James White [the fierciest anti-Catholic debater of our time] in the four or five times they squared of.
Since he is still alive and strong. Let us pray for him and the Holy spirit grant him the grace of genuine fidelity to the Church and her teachings.
What a wonderful way of looking at his circumstances. Yes, let's pray for him!
ReplyDeleteLet's also pray that he stops attacking his bishop and learns to obey him, too!
There are many very sad revelations in these articles.

God bless you for your pastoral heart.
May I ask what you think of this article, too? I own his "Not By" books and like them very much. But I am reading now that the last one on the Holy Eucharist never was approved for an imprimatur. And a very good Catholic apologist has said there are errors in it about God.
ReplyDeleteI think he makes a strong argument.

Maybe just Not by Faith Alone and Not by Scripture Alone are best?
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing us those links. I think they are valuable info for our faithful. I will refer the matter about NOT BY BREAD ALONE to our Totus owner and inquire about it to our other apologists.
Personally, I'm praying for the guy. I listen from time to time to his debates with James White and for that I am grateful to him. Let us pray for him and for Gerry Matatics so that they can truly become Champions of the Catholic faith again.
God bless you.
As a traditional Catholic, I am a geocentrist myself, and I resent some of the comments made. It shows how ignorance reign in some of our Catholic brethren. First, Robert's "anti-semitism", is NOT anti-semitism, please go directly to the person accused and not to his critics to know the facts (a problem often observed with anti-Catholics). He presented his view which is NOT anti-semitic, but against the Judaizers. He says that the Jews like the Arabs are part of the human family with immortal souls that has to be saved. And that salvation is found only in the Catholic Church. He opposes claims that these Jews have a separate covenant contra the New Covenant of Christ. Also, on Geocentrism, Scripture, Sacred Tradition, the Magisterium, and the unanimous consent of the Fathers are full of affirmation on this issue. Tradition says much on Geocentrism than the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption which are de fide. Yes, it has not reached the status of dogma but it IS part of the Church's Tradition, and it can therefore be believed without any harassment. I suggest you buy the book Galileo Was Wrong.
ReplyDeleteOn the errors about God I would like to challenge "anonymous" to prove where in Catholic dogma (or Scripture for that matter) that says in God's immutable nature, He cannot change his mind, or feel any emotions? To say God has no emotions is a contravention of the Catholic view on the purpose of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and our justification, wherein the Sacrifice of Calvary appeased the just anger and wrath of God the Father towards man, when He saw His only Son "qui propter nos homines, et propter nostram salutem" crucified and died for us. Now if there is no emotion in God do you think this would be possible? Would our penances, sacrifices, the saints' martyrdoms, our lengthy rosaries, our fasting and abstinence this past advent and during lent, would have any effect on the Nature of God if He doesn't have any emotions? Scripture is clear on the wrath of God Ex 4:14, Dt 9:9, Ex 32:9, etc. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Providentissimus Deus and upheld by Vatican II that we are “not to depart from the literal and obvious sense, except only where reason makes it untenable or necessity requires.”
Yes, I am a true thomist, but I am first a traditional Catholic, and I follow what the Bible and the Church says rather than what a saint taught, or commented on the issue. If the Church or Scripture is silent, then we go by what that particular saint taught. But since Scripture is teaching it and the Church endorsing the belief that God has emotions, then I'd rather place my bet on it than on the Angelic Doctor (Sancti Thomae, ora pro nobis).
It maybe true that Robert Sungenis is suspect, but let us at least give him the benefit of the doubt since he is a fellow brother in the Catholic Faith (who alone publicly debated a notorious sedevacantist and defended Vatican II and the Novus Ordo as both valid and licit), and instead let us ask his stand and clarify his position on these issues, especially concerning these infidel Jews.
Instavrare Omnia In Christo.
I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with you, Postmodernist. The list of things Sungenis has said about Jews is well attested and disturbing to anyone with a heart. His bishop has tried to stop him and Sungenis has attacked him as well. This is not what good Catholics do.
ReplyDeleteIt is not true that he only has taken up the issue of the covenant with the Jews. That is not what is so disturbing to so many. There are articles spread over the internet with proof from his own hand. He does not dispute that he has written and done these things.
http://www.sungenisandthejews.com/Section2.htm
He continues to do harm now and it is wrong.
http://sungenisandthejews.blogspot.com/2008/09/proverbs-2611.html
We should pray for Mr. Sungenis, but not pretend that what he has done is right or of little concern. Fr. Abe is right.
And I fear that your words show us why you see nothing wrong with Sungenis when he writes about Jews or "these infidel Jews" as you sadly put it. Yes, I surely can begin to see why you are unable to understand what is wrong with Sungenis.
As to his teaching about God, I can only say that what I have read at the website I gave looks very Catholic to me. Mr. Sungenis has not given proof from Church documents, the Fathers of our Church in the way Mr. Armstrong has. So, I think our friend "Postmodernist" has turned the Catholic way upside down. Catholics do not start with their own thinking and opinions and then teach it in books to Catholics. We begin with Church documents, the Fathers, the Bible and more and form ourselves accordingly.
But surely, that problem is for Fr. Abe and everyone else to decide.
To me, it is sad that Mr. Sungenis has gone so far astray. He helped many people with his first works. With Fr. Abe, I pray he finds his way back again.
After leaving my comment, I thought to myself "he's probably going to say that I don't believe Jews need our Lord Jesus Christ or His Holy Catholic Church because I objected to his choice of words 'these infidel Jews.'"
ReplyDeleteLet me put that to rest now. All men need Jesus and His Holy Catholic Church -- our Jewish brothers, our Arab brothers and our Asian brothers. All.
But surely the way to bring our Jewish brothers home our Lord is not to write the ugly and untrue things that Mr. Sungenis writes about them. That is not so difficult to understand.
O Good Lord... I never taught that my simple post about the list of books sold in Totus Bookstore will create intense and spirited exchange like this.
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, I already mentioned in this blog that Bob Sungenis is dear to my heart because of his great defense of the faith particulary his debates against James White. The man is truly a great defender of the faith.
On the other hand, I've been aware that Bob became ultra-traditional but he issued an apology for his views and in turn he defended Vatican II and the validity of Novus Ordo.
Concerning the 'Jews' I admit that I am not fully knowledgeable about Bob's views on the Jews although some of the comments I've read on the topic are not favorable to Bob. I just hope that he will be less adversarial on this matter just like the Holy Father and the Council Fathers of Vatican II. As Catholics we are all praying for the conversion of Jews, that they may recognize Jesus as the Messiah they've been looking for. But we have to do it in a less adversarial manner. The Jews are very intelligent race; I think they will appreciate more a reasonable exchange rather than strong statements that could lead us to alienations or hatred of each other. Our forefathers led by Pope Pius XII of Blessed Memory have witnessed the full evil of Anti-Jewish attitudes such an evil must not be inflamed once again on the face of the earth.
Let us pray to the Lord to grant us not only a mind full of knowledge necessary to comprehend high theological matters but also a heart of humility to gain wisdom from on high. To think and act and teach in fidelity to the Church so that the people will see the Splendor of Christ and not our own person.
I think Bro. Anonymous has stated already what he wanted to say and has given us enough links from Dave Armstrong to support his views. Then, if we have questions concerning the teachings and personal stand of Bob let us follow the suggestion of Bro. PostModernist, i.e., to write Bob Sungenis himself. I think he has an e-mail open to the public wherein we can send him our questions and clarifications. And he is generous in answering each e-mail. Let's bring it out to him personally. Then we can form our own judgment.
It is a pity that our apologists are sometimes troubled by issues of this kind, whether self made or not. Otherwise they could have spent the best of their time and energies against the Anti-Catholics and in explaining the faith.
Once again let us pray for Bob and for all of our Apologists.
Amen, Fr. Abe. I join you in that prayer.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry there was some strain between me and brother Postmodernist. But, having Jewish friends myself (only some who are Catholic), I cannot in good conscience stand by silently while a brother Catholic says there is nothing wrong with what Sungenis has written about Jews and how he has attacked his own bishop.
It deeply grieves me.
But I joyfully join you in your prayer for him and for all apologists. It is a treacherous vocation.
God bless you.
Dear Bro. Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteApologetics bring out the best in us but unfortunately it also bring out the worst in us. We can be very fast in quoting the Bible and citing the Fathers and the documents of the Church. We can bring converts to the Church, etc. But, we can also succumb to pride, to defiance if our priests or bishops are of lesser calibre than us. [I am talking here on the general level]
That is the reason why Catholic Apologists must always be devoted to Mary, the humblest Virgin from Nazareth. We have to realize that we are mere servants of the Lord. And in our struggle against the enemies of the Faith we have to bear in mind that the Commander in Chief is a THE LION OF JUDAH but whose appearance is not a lion but a LAMB OF SACRIFICE. And just like the Head we too must learn how to accept and value our sacrifices.
Only then can our preaching, teaching and defending be truly redemptive for us and for others.
wow po fr. saan po yung boookstore po na yan.........kung tutuusin po I really like to go in Catholic Bookstores kasi kahit book store po siya lagi po akong natambay po sa mga bookstores po na catholic at magbasa po ng books kaya nga po minsan I laugh at myself kasi it seems na karamihan po sa mga books po doon ay nabasa ko na po kaya di ko po mabili kasi po I knew already the whole content po......hehehehehehehehehehehe.....unlike po sa mga non-catholic bookstores na puro paninira lng po sa catholic faith ang laman at masyadong mabababaw na expalanation about sa Bible....
