PURGATORY IN THE BIBLE by Atty. Marwil Llasos of Defensores Fidei Foundation

Our Lady helping the souls in Purgatory through the help of angels

Purgatory

Intermediate state: Purgatory. No second chances – the souls there are saved, but through fire (1 Corinthians 3:15)

“There is a purgatory, and the souls there detained are assisted by the suffrages of the faithful, but especially by the most acceptable sacrifice of the altar” (Council of Trent).

This dogmatic definition contains 3 points of faith that all Catholics are required to believe:

1. There is a purgatory

2. After death, souls suffer there for their sins

3. The living can extend assistance to such souls

There is a purgatory

Forgiveness of sin in the next – Matthew 12:32

“Under the earth” – Revelations 5:2-3; Philippians 2:10

After death, souls suffer there for their sins

“You will not come out of it till you pay the last penny” – Matthew 5:26

“Matthean Parallel” (See: Matthew 18:23-35)

“Lazarusian Incident” (See: Luke 16:19-31)

Spirits in prison – 1 Peter 3:18-20; 4:6

The living can extend assistance to such souls

Restrain not grace from the dead – Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 7:37

See: Ruth 1:8

Offerings/Sacrifice for the dead

2 Maccabees 12:38-36

“And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection” (2 Maccabees 12:43, Douay-Rheims Bible).

Fasting for the for the dead

1 Samuel 31:13;

1 Chronicles 10:12

2 Samuel 1:12

Prayer for the dead

2 Maccabees 12:44-46

“It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Maccabees 12:46, Douay-Rheims Bible).

See: Nehemiah 1:4-6, cf. Nehemiah 2:5

Understanding Purgatory:

1. Understanding the doctrine of purgatory demands knowing the nature/attributes of God:

God is Holy (Habakkuk 1:13; Isaiah 6:3; Revelations 4:8; Leviticus 11:44

God is Just (1 John 1:9; Revelations 15:3)

God is Merciful (Psalm 116, Lamentations 3:22, Psalm 103:8)

See: Ruth 2:20

God is Love (1 John 4:8, 16)

2. Understanding the doctrine of purgatory demands a proper understanding of the concept of sin:

Gradation (degrees) of sin

Mortal Sin vs. Venial Sin (1 John 5:16-17, NRSV)

  2. I thought the only reference for Purgatory was in Maccabees 2. Now the Protestants can't speak a word against our Doctrine!!!

  3. O, there are many references for Purgatory in the Bible. It so happened that many priests are not teaching them nowadays. But with the rise of Catholic Apologetics then our strong arguments for the Truth of the Faith is shining out again.

  4. Mr. Abe! if you think that purgatory is supported by the Bible then why you not challenge Bro. Eli Soriano and Bro. Daniel Razon for a LIVE TV DEbate Nationwide..

Let's see if you truly know GOD's teachings from the Holy Bible.

  6. What I know is that Mr. Soriano is hiding abroad and therefore ineligible for public debate. On the part of Mr. Daniel Razon Atty. Marwil Llasos will be very willing to engage him in a one on one debate.

Now, Mr. Anonymous are you the official spokesperson of Soriano and Razon? If not don't pretend to be one. Mr. Ben Douglass, a Catholic Apologist in the U.S. challenged Mr. Soriano to a one on one debate yet Soriano refused. He asked Mr. Douglass an endorsement letter from Catholic Bishop. Our bishops do not give endorsements. I'm curious because Soriano used to debates ordinary Catholics on streets now that he is challenged by a Catholic Apologist in the U.S. he demands something. Mr. Soriano owes Mr. Ben Douglass. He has to fulfill that before taking anybody else.

Atty. Llasos and Mr. Razon are matched. They both study law. Atty. Llasos will not backtrack from Razon.

  7. Concerning the topic. I think it is better if the topic to be debated is: ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE THE CHURCH OF GOD INTERNATIONAL IS THE TRUE CHURCH or ELISEO SORIANO A MESSENGER OF GOD ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE. It would be very exciting.

Well, I think its easy for you find the words Church of God International and Eliseo Soriano in the Bible don't you?

  8. Jesus preached to the souls in prison before he took them to paradise. If they were not in Hell or Heaven theyn must have been somewhere else???

The word "Shield" is mentioned many times in the Bible. INvestigate this word and it will lead you to the truth concerning puragtory.

  9. That ADD guy is a certified coward. Of course, I can debate Soriano or Razon, but will they? Since this anonymous ADD wants me to debate his idols, why doesn't he come out in the open and arrange with us for a debate? And since you are the ones challenging us, we will give you our terms. We don't shy away from a good fight.

At any rate, if your basis on returning to Catholicism is by defeating Soriano, that's a very shallow reason. Thanks but no thanks.

Also, in ADD, it seems that only their leader can debate. Are the members pure idiots who cannot stand on their own? Lagi na lang nagtatago sa palda ni Ingkong. Ano ba yan? Lagi nagpapasaklolo sa puno nila. Anong klaseng samahan iyan? Si Ingkong lang ba ang talagang magaling sa inyo?

  10. I Agree with Atty. Marwill that those ADD anonymous up there are cowards.. hehehehe..

Once an ADD layman debated with me (on-line) at first he was very boastful of his so-called "Biblical Knowledge" and attacked the Catholic Church on images and Mary. But when i answered and refuted him, replete with biblical passages, i asked him questions in return.

    what was his response?

He told me visit their Bible Expositions. that every questions of mine would be answered by his leader..

hahaha.. how coward!! ( i though he was debating with me, and now he's asking his leader for a help)

that coward is a nursing student. hehehe

  11. Just stay where you are, Mr.Anonymous! You don't need to go back to catholicism for such a stupid reason. What you need is to be educated correctly in the faith and maybe your heart and mind will be opened.
An uneducated Catholic is a dangerous one!

  12. I am a baptized catholic, can you help me understand this teaching of Jesus: "Foxes have holes, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lie down and rest". Thanks

  13. Dear Rony,

It means that Jesus is living a life of simplicity and poverty. He didn't have his own home. This is true because he left His home in Nazareth to preach the Gospel and the home where he stayed during His 3 year ministry was not His own but that of St. Peter in Capernaum.

Spiritually, Jesus is telling the man who wants to be His follower that if he wants to follow Him he must expect a life of poverty and sacrifice.

  14. Dear Fr. Abe,
Thank you for your patience. Although I have a different view about the passage: "Foxes have holes, birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lie down and rest", I do respect your interpretation about it. For my interpretation, I would like to invite you to read mine, I posted it at: jesus-in-actionphilippines.blogspot.com

  15. Dear Rony,

What you have given is your personal interpretation and not what the text have implied. I'm not saying that it is wrong but that it is not faithful to the context of the full text of the Gospel passage.

Let us see the saying in wider perspective:

    Matthew 8:19-20

19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

20Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

As you can see the context is that a man is asking Jesus to follow Him but Jesus instead answered that famous saying. Jesus is reminding the man that once he followed Jesus then he has to live the kind of life that Jesus is living with his Apostles. What kind of life is that? A life of poverty and sacrifice.

Your interpretation is good also as a personal reflection on the text.

    God bless you.

  16. Dear Fr.Abe,

Thank you for spending your time to visit my blog and read my own interpretation, I appreciate it very much.

    More power to you.

  18. I observed also from this CULT Group of Eliseo Soriano that only Soriano can face anyone for debate and not their Ministers in Charge (MIC), OIC’s, and Workers. Even Daniel Razon who is second in command of the group is not showing his face to any debate. Bakit kaya?? He he even Soriano is not keen in debating to a Catholic Apologist because she knew. Oops! He knew that he will be BEATEN badly.
Tsk! Tsk! Poor members of this group. They are letting themselves to become mga TANGA.

  19. As a general belief..We will be judge according to what we've done, thinks or according to our heart when we are alive..

If we can still be save in the purgatory. There will be so many contradictions..

And I also think that we should pray for those who are alive..not to those who are already dead..

    ReplyDelete
  20. [As a general belief..We will be judge according to what we've done, thinks or according to our heart when we are alive..]

    THAT IS RIGHT.

[If we can still be save in the purgatory. There will be so many contradictions..]

YOU HAVE A WRONG NOTION OF PURGATORY.

PURGATORY IS AN ACT OF GOD'S SAVING GRACE PURIFYING THOSE WHO HAVE COMMITTED SINS IN THIS WORLD AND HAVE DIED. THEIR SINS WERE NOT SO GRAVE TO SEND THEM TO HELL SO THERE IS A NEED OF PURIFICATION BEFORE THEY CAN ENTER HEAVEN. THAT SALVIFIC PURIFICATION PROCESS IS CALLED PURGATORY.

[And I also think that we should pray for those who are alive..not to those who are already dead..]

WHERE CAN YOU FIND IN THE BIBLE THAT PRAYERS ARE ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE ALIVE? BESIDES, THE DEAD ARE ALIVE TOO BECAUSE ONLY THE BODY DIED. THE SOULS ARE ALIVE IN GOD BECAUSE GOD IS NOT THE GOD OF THE DEAD BUT OF THE LIVING.

  21. As a general belief

[This goes to show how sorely sophomoric your knowledge of the Bible is. It is not just a general belief. It is a Biblical datum of faith that we will be judged according to our works while we are still alive.]

..We will be judge according to what we've done, thinks or according to our heart when we are alive.

[Of course. Who contests this? This is a red herring. No Catholic disputes this. This has absolutely nothing to do with purgatory. The souls who are momentarily there have been judged based on their works when they were still alive. So, what has this statement got to do with purgatory?]

If we can still be save in the purgatory.

[Your absolute ignorance of Catholic doctrine on purgatory rears its ugly head? Those who are in purgatory are already saved! Unlike your minions who are in hell and cannot anymore be saved.]

There will be so many contradictions.

[You cannot even cite even a single contradiction? Why is that? Because your premise is wrong. No, we don’t believe that those who are in purgatory will be saved – they are already saved! Now, if there is no purgatory, there will be many contradictions in the Bible. I will enumerate them to you if you have the courage to show your face.]

  22. The Douay-Rheims in itself is somewhat different from other translations. It was translated directly from the Latin Vulgate, so it follows its chapter and verse numbering as well as titles of the books and their order. I wanted to get a really good version of the D-R Catholic Bible for my NOOK that would preserve these unique features and also be reader friendly
