CEBU TRIP, Part 15 Young Catholic Faith Defenders in Casa Miani Cebu

St. Jerome Emiliani with Mother of the Orphans

As we celebrate today the feast of St. Jerome Emiliani I hereby close the thread about CASA MIANI ARVEDI-BUSCHINI. I have shown you almost all its parts, inside ad outside. You have visited its gardens and behold its flowers. Moreover I have provided you with the brief explanations of its purpose and spirit. It's root in the Love of God and the Charity of Christ. Then the link between Christ and St. Jerome Emiliani who tried to live the Gospel through life of Charity and Sacrifice for the sake of the poor, the sick, the converted prostitudes and the orphans and the needy children became the charism that permeated the live of the Somascan Fathers and Brothers all over the world.

Moreover, there is another aspect on the life of St. Jerome that is not yet fully highlighted. That St. Jerome Emiliani is one of the 16th century saints who helped the Pope in countering the Reformation offensive of the Protestants. He countered it by teaching Catechism to the People and in doing so he helped the Italians remain faithful to the Holy Mother Church and deepened the knowledge of the people of the Word of God.

It is therefore fitting that young Defenders of the Catholic faith found themselves at home in the House of St. Jerome Emiliani [Casa Miani] and were delighted to feel the presence of the same Spirit present therein. It is also touching to see this photo of the saintly Archbishop of Cebu Ricardo Cardinal Vidal manifesting his loyalty to the Vicar of Christ. We Somascans do the same and may our lay faithful be active in their defense of the faith as these two young gentlemen.

  3. Hello Fr. Abe,

You're looking good in that black cassock and white roman collar! I am reminded to get you a fascia. I was in Manila last week and when I asked Fr. Grato where he kept that extra fascia he said somebody may have taken it because he has only one, and that's the one he uses. Please five me you tummy size again so that I can get you another fascia. I notice the good nishop is not wearing one. One day I hope to get you a purple fascia and purple zuccheto. By the way, were you also in Cebu for the opening of your new Casa there? God bless!

  4. Hello Richard,

Nice to hear from you again.

Thank you very much for remembering about the fascia. Well, its alright if Fr. Grato doesn't have it anymore.

Yes, brother. I was in Cebu actually for the Inauguration of our new Orphanage the Casa Miani in Minglanilla Cebu. Just browse the earlier posts I did about Cebu and you will see my reports about the Inauguration and the Blessing.

    God bless you.

  5. Father, unless you want the world to know your tummy size, please email me directly and I will take care of your fascia.

I did scroll down and take a look at the Cebu pics. Your orphanage there is slendid!

Did the bishop just celebrate Mass and then do the blessing of the orphanage? If not, this affords me the opportunity to point out another example of the misuse of liturgical vestments for non-liturgical purposes (here we go again!). Often, when doing blessings, priets would vest in chasu-albs and stole. When they do confessions, they vest also in chasu-alb and stole. When they celebrate Mass, they also vest in chasu-alb and stole. In effect, priests do not any more make any distinction between vestments for celebrating Mass, and vestments for other sacraments. Strictly speaking, the chasuble is a vestment properly used only for Mass, not for blessings outside Mass or for any other purpose. In those other ocassions, the priest should be wearing a surplice over a cassock, and a stole over the surplice. This way there is a clear distinction in the use of the vestments. As it is in the pictures (and elsewhere for that matter in the Philippines), the vestment for Mass is the same vestment for all other ocassions. This is quite unfortunate, this abandoning of liturgical vestments.

At St. Jerome in Alabang last year, my father once told me that after a TLM he saw Fr. Grato, wearing a surplice over his black cassock, baptize several babies in the church. It was a sight to behold. I wish more priests would do the same!

  6. Dear Richard,

Thank you very much for your appreciation of our new orphanage and seminary in Cebu.

Now, its evening here and I can't get a tape measure for my tummy. I will do so tomorrow.

Yes, Bro. the Bishop celebrated the Mass and right after the Mass he Blessed the House so he was not able to change. He used the vestments for the Mass during the Blessing. Even the concelebrant priests did the same. Well, except me because by that time I was only wearing my black cassock.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the liturgical vestments with us. Its a pity we were not able to see each other when you visited the country.

    See you soon.

  7. Dear Brothers in Christ,
I am a Catholic and I am happy that there are now Catholic Faith Defenders (CFD). Does it necessary follow that since you can defend the Catholic faith and I can't, you have more faith than me?

  8. Dear Rony,

The fact that we can defend the Catholic faith does not automatically mean that we have more faith than you. But, it is also possible. We cannot also reject the possibility that we have more faith than you.

What is sure though is that we studied the faith more than you and have trained ourselves in defending the faith more than you.

  9. Dear Father,
I think that you're right that you have more faith than me and that you have studied the faith more than I do. Since you have more faith and you have studied the faith, am I right to assume that you can now clearly explain the Holy Trinity that St. Augustine considered a mystery? Similarly, since Jesus said: "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find and knock and the door shall opened unto you" there are no more mysteries?

Also, here on earth we have several spoken languages, can you tell what kind of languge are we going to use when we are heaven?

    Thank you and God bless.

  10. Dear Rony,

The fact that the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is a Mystery does not mean that it cannot be explained clearly. In fact that doctrine is clearly explained in many Catholic Catechisms and theological books. St. Augustine also wrote a book clearly explaning the doctrine which he entitle De Trinitate.

Mystery means something that we know but cannot FULLY understand. Like for instance, the Sun. We know there is a sun. We know that it is composed of burning fire. But we do not know what it really is because none of us have come near it to examine it really.
