The body of the Filipino martyr for Freedom and Democracy, Sen. Ninoy Aquino, sprawled on the ground of Manila International Airport [now Ninoy Aquino International Airport] after the brutal assasination on August 21, 1983. Below, the image of the late Senator and the nation honoring him by putting yellow ribbons and yellow banners bearing his image during the anniversaries of his death.

My dearest Ballsy,I write you this letter with tears in my eyes and as if steel fingers are crushing my heart because I wanted so much to bewith you as you celebrate your legal emancipation. Now that you have come of age, my love, a voice tells me that I am nolonger young and suddenly, I feel old.
An old poet gave this advice very long ago "when you are sad, remember the roses will bloom in December." I want to send youbouquet of roses, big red roses from my dreamland garden. Unfortunately for the present, my roses are not in bloom, in factthey have dropped all their petals and only the thorns are left to keep me company. I do think it is fitting to send you athicket of thorns on this memorable day!
I am very proud of you because you have inherited all the best traits of your mother. You are sensible, responsible,even-tempered and sincere with the least pretenses and affection which vehemently detest in a woman. I am sure like yourmother, you will possess that rare brand of silent courage and that combination of fidelity and fortitude that will be thelife vest of your man in the tragic moments of his life.
During my lonely hours of solitary confinement in FortMagsaysay, Laur, Nueva Ecija last March and April with nothing else todo but pray and daydream, with only my fond memories to keep me company, I planned a weekend barrio fiesta for you in Tarlacfor your 18th birthday. I fooled myself into believing that my ordeal would end with the fiscal year. Iplanned to invite all your classmates and friends and their families for the weekends.
The schedule called for an early departure by bus from Manila and the first stop will be Concepcion, where lunch will beserved by the pool. And after lunch, you were to visit the Santa Rita Elementary School to distribute cookies and ice cream tothe children of that public school where you were first enrolled.I guess sheer nostalgia prompted me to include Santa Rita. We were only three then: Mommie, you and I. Those were the days ofhappy memories little responsibilities, tremendous freedom, a great future ahead and capped by a fulfillment of love.. Youare the first fruit of our union, the first proof of our love and the first seal of our affections.
From Concepcion we were to proceed to Luisita for the barrio fiesta. I intended to invite a friend who could roast an entirecow succulently. Swimming, pelota, dancing and eating would have been the order of the day.
Sunday morning was reserved for a trip around the Hacienda and the mill and maybe golf for some of the parents and later apicnic-lunch on Uncle Tony's Island. Return to Manila after lunch. I am afraid this will have to remain as one of the manydreams I had in Laur.
Our future has suddenly become uncertain and our fate unknown. I am even now beginning to doubt whether I'll ever be able toreturn to you and the family. Hence, I would like to ask you these special favors.
Love your mother, whose love for you, you will never be able to match. She is not the greatest mother in the world, she isyour sincerest friend.
Take care of your younger sisters and brother and lavish them with the love and care I would like to continue giving them butam unable to do so.
Help Noy-noy along and pray hard that he will grow to be a real, responsible man who in later years will protect you all.
You are the model for your three younger sisters. Your responsibility is therefore great. Please endeavor to live up to ourhighest expectations. Be more tolerant to Pinky, more accessible to Viel, our little genius-princess, and more charitable toKrissy, our baby doll, and make up for my neglect.
Finally, forgive me, my love, for not having been an ideal, good and thoughtful father to you all as I pursued public office.I had hopes and high resolve of making up, but I am afraid my destiny will not oblige.
I seal this letter with a drop of tear and a prayer in my heart, that somehow, somewhere we shall meet again and I willfinally be able to make up for all my lapses, in the kingdom where justice reigns supreme and love is eternal.I love you,Dad

with this article, you reduced me to tears, onced again I am very grateful to the family of our late national hero 'Ninoy', he sacrificed alot for us. I can feels his love, respect & admiration to our great 'Tita Cory'.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the sufferings & hardship during his prisonment but like an obedient childs to our LORD, even that time , he bravely accept His fate.
Just like what Kris commented about Ballsy, she is truly brave but ladylike & dignified like their Mom.
Everything 'Ninoy' said about His children is true like 'Kris' she truly lives her late father expectation.
The Aquinos is truly a gift for us Filipinos.
'Ninoy & 'Tita Cory' Di kayo Nagiisa!
Thank you Fr. Abe for posting this article.
Ate Len
Dearest Ate Len,
ReplyDeleteThat cry: "Ninoy, Hindi ka nag-iisa!" [Ninoy, you are not alone] is now reverberating in the entire archipelago as "Cory, hindi ka nag-iisa". The hero martyr who challenged the Marcos Dictatorship by his lonesome self was joined by 2 million people during his funeral. Then his widow, Cory, who was left alone to continue the struggle for freedom left behind by her assasinated husband was supported by 4 million Filipinos in the People Power, bloodless revolution. Now, the nation found its courage and strength through the heroic courage and fortitude of these Magnificent Couple.
The Marcos Dictatorship was a CONJUGAL DICTATORSHIP: Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. It was fitting that they were challenged and defeated by a CONJUGAL FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND CONJUGAL HEROES... NINOY AND CORY who offered themselves for the cause of democracy in selflessness and total self-offering. They lived a life of 'Holocaust' for the benefit of the Filipino people. Ninoy is a martyr who died praying the Rosary, Cory is a saintly leader who nourished her people with the power of prayer particularly of the Holy Rosary - A Hero and A Saint in the hearts of her people.
PRAISED BE JESUS CHRIST, ALLELUIA!
While reading this letter i cried a lot because i remember my late husband who left me with 3 kids. I raised my 3 kids alone and with Gods help
ReplyDeletethey finished their studies up to college. Ninoy and Cory your memories will always remain to our hearts and to the hearts of all the people in the whole world.
We love you very much.

Yes, let us keep the spirit of EDSA - the legacy of Ninoy and Cory alive in our hearts. NEVER AGAIN SHALL WE ALLOW A DICTATOR OR ANY LEADER TO DESTROY OUR FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY.
God bless you.
Dear Fr. Abe,
ReplyDeleteThe content of this letter is absolutely heart-breaking yet very inspiring. How I wish I could even be a quarter of the man Ninoy was. Thanks for posting it here. it is one for the ages. God bless.
Taiguru
Dear Fr. Abe,
ReplyDeleteI was in tears while reading this letter, and every word of it that Ninoy said was heartwarming. I can feel the love of a father to his own children and his unremarkable love for our country. I was not born yet when this letter was made, and I thank you so much for charing his thoughts to me. I would love my son to read this letter as well as soon as he grow because I know that this will inspire him too as this inspired me...
Now I realized how should we be thankful to Ninoy and Cory for helping the us, filipinos win our freedom back.
I will continually pray to have a very sincere and patriot leader like Ninoy and Cory in the coming election.
Dear Taiguru and Jycenn April,
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is really heartbreaking. My sisters and myself were moved to tears by this same letter of the late national hero to his beloved daughter. Ninoy is truly a man of God, a man of peace, a faithful father and a martyr for our nation.
Last afternoon of Aug. 21, 2009 I gathered all College students in our Aemilianum College here in Sorsogon City and asked them to watch Ninoy's historic speech in Los Angeles way back 1981. When they saw how intelligent, how brillian and how dedicated Ninoy was the students were moved to tears.
It was their first time to see a full video of Ninoy in his best and they were so surprised by his intelligence, honesty and courage. Truly the Pride of our Race.
I've seen this letter circulating in the Internet lately, mostly on several blogs, at pati rin nga po sa evening news nakaabot na.
ReplyDeleteWith this letter we can see that he really loves his family so much, and that time, the only way he can show his love is through his letters.. Although that letter to his eldest daughter, Ballsy, is filled with sorrow and sadness, I can still felt the "paternal sweetness" for her daughter... Somehow I also felt quite envious with that.
Dear Sammy,
ReplyDeleteIt only goes to show that Ninoy is truly a man of peace, with great love in his heart and a true man of faith.
Marcos was lying when he was depicting Ninoy as evil, a communist and a cold blooded murderer.
Well, Ninoy is now a National Hero while Marcos is condemned in History.
