The Late Corazon Cojuangco Aquino praying the Rosary for Truth and Justice. Indeed, CORY IS A WOMAN OF DEEP FAITH, OF GENUINE CHRISTIAN VIRTUES AND OF PRAYER. Her life is characterized by Eucharistic nourishment and of spiritual rejuvination from praying the Holy Rosary.
The internationally renown magazine entitled its news headline on the death of Pres. Cory Aquino: PEOPLE POWER'S PHILIPPINE SAINT: CORAZON AQUINO. What a fitting tribute to the venerable matriarch of Philippine Contemporary Democracy... THE JOAN OF ARC OF OUR GENERATION. Here are some quotes from that Time article:
"The arc of Corazon Aquino's life lent itself to maxims, but two hard-nosed ones seem particularly worth pointing out. First, political sainthood is a gift from heaven with a Cinderella deadline — once past midnight, you are a pumpkin. Second, personal virtues are never a guarantee of effective or successful governance. What was truly shocking about Aquino's tumultuous six-year term as President of the Philippines was that those maxims proved untrue. Midnight always threatened Aquino but never struck; and she was a good woman whose goodness alone, at the very end, was what proved enough, if only by an iota, to save her country."
"Furthermore, she retained a whiff of sanctity even as her government rotted, even as Filipinos worked hard to prove George Orwell's aphorism that saints are guilty until proven innocent. As Aquino ruled, every month seemed to diminish the political miracle of her astonishing rise to power, but she survived. And her survival guaranteed the continuation of democracy in her homeland. "
"Corazon Aquino died a revered figure, after an excruciating struggle with colon cancer, in a hospital in the Philippines."
"The devout and stoic Roman Catholic widow became the incarnation of a pious nation that had itself suffered silently through more than a decade of autocratic rule."
"Aquino was convinced that her presidency was divinely inspired, even as her political foes mocked her piety. "If the country needs me," she said, "God will spare me." And miracle of miracles, she proved God right and her critics wrong. "
"But Filipinos must now take stock. Whom will they march with now that their saint has gone to meet her God? "

Cory lived a saintly life. Only God knows but if one day she intercedes for our healing then she must be a "saint"-- first political leader to be venerated in the Church.
ReplyDeletemay she rest in peace.
Dear Church Defender,
ReplyDeleteShe could be the first political leader to be canonized in our country but in the history of the Church there are already politicians's saint like St. Thomas Moore and then a good number of Kings and Queens. But I think he is the only one in Contemporary Period.
Hope I have time to research on this.
I am convinced that she lived a very holy life and her virtues are genuinely lived.
Im in favor for this, but i also know na mahaba ang proseso at maaaring me mas mataas o higit pang standard ang pagpili ng magiging saint but for me kung sa dami ng mga natouched nyang life, at sa kanyang mga good qualities para sa akin isa na siyang Saint.

Dearest Ate Len,
ReplyDeleteIt is true that Pres. Cory is universally acclaimed as a holy, pious and selfless woman. but it is also true that the process for sainthood is long and arduous. In fact, the process can only start 5 years after yer death unless the Holy Father removed the 5 year barrier.
Regardless of the long process, it is our duty as Christians to proclaim the good things that persons did and Mrs. Aquino, I believe, lived her Catholic Faith heroically as a simple and unknown wife of a famous politician, as a courageaous grieving widow, as a crusader of peaceful means against the 21 year dictatorship, as a very honest President and dedicated leader, as a woman of fortitude against the 9 coup de etats hurled against her by the military adventurists, as a humble and simple Citezen Cory after her retirement from public office, as an ardent promoter of the Holy Mass and the Holy Rosary and other Marian devotions during and after her presidency, and her close collaborations with the late Cardinal Sin as the Moral Compass of the Nation for the span of mnre than 2 and a half decades.
In our media, particularly the print media, she is specially mentioned continuously as THE JOAN OF ARC OF THE PHILIPPINES. Why, because she answered and fulfilled the mission that God had given her despite the lack of experience. I think she is as holy as the Maid of France.
