Exchange with a Baptist on Sola Scriptura, Part 1

The Gutenberg Bible
Hello Father,
I am Mr. W.C.'s wife, I saw your tirade on facebook and I am shocked to see a Catholic priest behave in such a way. I understand your anger, I too was once a Catholic who defended the Catholic faith with burning passion. I thought I would kill for my religion if needed. But I was blinded by the lies, deceit and politics of Catholicism.
I have many questions for you, but for now may I just ask you one? If Sola Scriptura is unbiblical, what gives you the authority to such claim? If the Bible is not the only authority, what makes you say that the other authorities you claim to be authorities too alongside the bible are indeed authorities? Who gave them the authority to become authorities?I think that is a fairly simple question and I hope to receive a fairly simple and polite response from you as well.
Sincerely,
Mrs. H.C.

Hello Mrs. C.,

I think before you refer to my refutation of your husband's comments you should also look at the tirades he made on a very simple devotional statement made by Ms. C.N. He claimed that the lady presents a different Gospel. His attacks on the Catholic Faith on that Facebook account especially uncalled for is unworthy of a Christian. I simply refuted his claims.

Now, if you thought you would kill for your religion then you were not properly immersed yourself in the Catholic Faith. Because it is never the teaching of the Church to kill for our faith unless it is for a just war or for self-defence or for last resort.

“I understand your anger...” You do not understand it at all because I’m not angry at your husband but I am angry at the way he treated a lady, Ms. N., who meant no harm and suddenly accused of presenting a different Gospel which she never did.

“But I was blinded by the lies, deceit and politics of Catholicism.” I think this is a product of your own delusions rather than the truth of what the Catholic Church really is. Please give me the name of your affiliated religion and I can easily list down their own laundry of so-called lies, deceit and politics.... for instance of the Baptist Churches.

Now to answer your questions:

If Sola Scriptura is unbiblical, what gives you the authority to such claim?

1. THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS WHO NEVER TAUGHT AND PRACTICE SOLA SCRIPTURA. Will you please give me a chapter and verse where Jesus teach and practice Sola Scriptura. Explicit and Categorical citation please.

2. THE AUTHORITY OF THE APOSTLES WHO NEVER TAUGHT SOLA SCRIPTURA. Please be so kind to tell me who among the Apostles taught and practice Sola Scriptura.

3. THE CONTRADICTION OF YOUR CLAIM FOR SOLA SCRIPTURA. If the Bible Alone is the sole authority then the Bible must state it Clearly, Categorically, Explicitly. But none of that sort. It means your position is self-defeating. The Bible itself crushes Sola Scriptura.

If the Bible is not the only authority, what makes you say that the other authorities you claim to be authorities too alongside the bible are indeed authorities?

It is indeed an authority because:

1. JESUS ESTABLISHED AND FOUNDED IT: THE CHURCH and

2. ST. PAUL CLEARLY, CATEGORICALLY AND EXPLICITLY REFERRED TO IT AS “THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH” [1 Timothy 3:15]. If Sola Scriptura is a truth of faith St. Paul should have stated: “THE BIBLE ALONE IS THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH”.

Who gave them the authority to become authorities?

1. The One who gave the Authority to the CHURCH is JESUS. The Lord Jesus founded the Church. Will you deny that Authority?

2. St. Paul says that the Church is the Pillar and Ground of Truth. Will you deny that statement?

3. St. Paul says that the Church is THE BODY OF CHRIST. So, the Bible is the Word of God while the Church is the Body of the Lord. If the Word of Jesus is an Authority, is His Body also an Authority or not?

Now, I have an additional question for you. WHO IS THE HUMAN PERSON WHO INVENTED THE PROTESTANT DOGMA OF SOLA SCRIPTURA?

Indeed, your questions are simple and I have given simple answers to your simple questions. I hope you will also give me simple answers to my simple questions.

I hope this letter will not appear impolite for you. Because if non Catholics feel it their obligation to question the Catholic faith, it is also our pleasure to answer and to question your faith as well. It would have been better if you posted on that same link so that the readers will see if you can really prove from the Bible your Dogma of Sola Scriptura.

In Christ Jesus,

Fr. Abe Arganiosa, CRS

  1. Hi Sir.

Excuse me, but are you committing the fallacy of false dichotomy here when you asked the to prove sola scriptura clearly, categorically, and explicitly from the Bible? I don't think that's fair.

I'm sure that you yourself would admit that your doctrines such as the Immaculate Conception and Purgatory aren't that explicit and categorical.

  2. Way to go! :) I feel that this explanation was straightforward and I guess it becomes now a question of how open-minded Mr. W.C. is. Let's pray for more graces that people like Mr. W.C. will see the Truth in all sobriety and understanding.

  3. Dear Chipi,

Mr. W.C. refused to respond to me and instead his wife corresponded through face book. I will post our exchange for the benefits of the readers. God bless you.

  5. Dear Anoymous,

O no. I am not bound to give a word for word text of Catholic Doctrines such as the Immaculate Conception because WE DO NOT TEACH SOLA SCRIPTURA. Our source of Revelation is not Bible Alone but including the Apostolic Tradition.

The Baptist limited himself by teaching Sola Scriptura. We cannot be limited in the same manner.

  6. I can't believe you are a priest, a so-called representative of the Christian faith, with the way you talked to the couple. You were very harsh, unrespectful and with they way you treated them there is no way you would be able to convince them to deflect to their faith and return to Catholicism. The lady is much more gracious than you. You should be ashamed of yourself for even feeling proud about what you did!

I saw Jesus more in the way the lady talked to you at the end of her letter (part 3) but you still kept on fighting with her. I also can't believe you picked a fight with a woman!

  7. Fr. Abe,

You said: The Baptist limited himself by teaching Sola Scriptura. We cannot be limited in the same manner.

Does it necessarily follow that they have to give it word for word? May be you are misrepresenting sola scriptura.

  8. I think anonymous needs to think over his argument before making foolish statements and claims.

This was very clear and straight forward. Thank you.

  9. Anonymous,

What kind of priest do you want? A priest who will refuse to answer the attacks against the Catholic Faith. Excuse me, that is not priesthood that is irresponsibility.

The reason why many Catholics fell into heresies of Luther and the Protestant sects because for many years we didn't answer their allegations and attacks.

Gender is not an issue here. Her being a woman and my being a man is not the issue here. It is the Biblical Foundation of Faith.

She appears to be diplomatic on the later part but her attacks against Mary and our respect of saints and of angels must be refuted. It's a tactic common from Born Again and Baptist groups. A subtle attack: "Jesus is the only LOrd and Savior... therefore we don't need Mary." C'mmon. We do not buy such junk invented by Anti-Catholics. That way of thinking is not Biblical and in human. IF WE ONLY NEED JESUS, WHY DO WE NEED EACH OTHER? WHY DO PEOPLE NEED A HUSBAND OR A WIFE, OR PARENTS, OR CHILDREN?

TO HAVE JESUS AS THE ONLY LORD AND SAVIOR IS TO BE OPEN TO THE PRESENCE OF OTHER CREATURES WHO ARE ALSO LOVED BY GOD. AND PROMINENT FOR THAT IS MARY, THE APOSTLES AND THE ANGELS.

We don't want our people to be fed with heresies in this blog.

  10. Dear Anonymous,

"Does it necessarily follow that they have to give it word for word? May be you are misrepresenting sola scriptura."

Of course, Bible Alone e. It must be from the Bible and from the Bible alone. Now, if they don't want word for word they have to proof clearly from the Bible that ONLY THE BIBLE IS THE SOURCE OF AUTHORITY. But, they are refuted by the Bible itself because the Bible declared that: THE CHURCH IS THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH. They are finished with that. The Bible gave another Authority beside the Bible.

You're too quick to draw about the priest picking a fight with a woman when you're not even part of the comments’ thread unless you are the husband or the wife under the name Anonymous.

I saw the thread since I’m part of that network. The husband initiated the thread by being offensive with his wordings. If I were him, I’d be cautious of my own 'hostile behavior' with others especially with women. Besides that, he’s a real coward to even let his wife email the priest when he ought to be doing it. The priest simply refuted all their claims in a forthright and straightforward manner.

They were taken aback because there are Catholics who are not ignorant of Scriptures.

Quit with the "I saw Jesus more in the way the lady talked to you at the end of her letter (part 3)". To be objective about this, it’s quite obvious that she and her husband have the faintest clue about their ‘bibles’. They just simply quote biblical verses and interpret them on their own liking.

  13. Ha, ha, ha... That John MacArthur is a coward. He was challenged by Catholic Apologists in the United States for Debates but he refused.

He is a liar. He is ignorant of basic facts about the Catholic Faith. The CATHOLIC CREED states:

"We believe in ONE GOD the FATHER ALMIGHTY and in JESUS CHRIST HIS ONLY SON OUR LORD."

It is nowhere stated in our Creed and Catechism that Mary is our God. That is Satanic Deception. He is inventing a doctrine and dogma for us. On the contrary, the Catholic Church officially teaches that MARY IS NOT GOD. To teach that Mary is God is a heresy and a violation of the Catholic Faith.

He quoted several sources from the Catholic Church none of them declares Mary as God.

I WILL REPORT THIS SITE TO SEVERAL CATHOLIC APOLOGISTS IN THE UNITED STATES SO THAT NEW CHALLENGES WILL BE ISSUED TO THIS LIAR.

That is stupid. If the other party says: I DON'T BELIEVE IN SOLA SCRIPTURA! Then I will be happy and satisfied because he or she agrees with me. It will be illogical and unchristian for me to insist: YOU BELIVE IN SOLA SCRIPTURA! despite the fact that it is explicitly and categorically denied by the other party.

That is how evil the technique of this John MacArthur. HE IS INVENTING A CATHOLIC DOCTRINE FOR US. He is attacking his own invention and attribute his own invention to the Catholics. Shame on him.
