  2. Bro. Tito,

The Perpetual Profession is the public declaration of the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience of a Somascan Religious by which he is accepting the Lord's call to be a Somascan Religious forever ['Perpetually'].

This is common to almost all religious men and women. After certain years of formation or training the person enters apprenticeship in the religious life called [Novitiate]. Then after a year or two the Novice petitions the Superiors to be accepted as a Religious of the Congregation or Order. IF the petition is favorably voted that person will take the Temporary Vows.

The Temporary Vows is a public prouncement of consecrating oneself to the Lord in Religious Life in the Order by which one promises or vows to live a life of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience as well as life in common in the convent or seminary. It is called Temporary because it has canonical limitations, for instance, in our case after 3 years the vows canonically dissolves. If the religious doesn't want to renew the vows then he or she is free to go away and get married without impediment. In case he wants to continue he can ask for renewal for another 3 years or petition for Perpetual Profession if already sure of his vocation.

Once the petition for Perpetual Profession is approved and is held that guy is a Religious for life and forever. He doesn't need to renew it every 3 years. The consecration is final and complete. It also gives you all the rights and priveleges of your Congregation. You can vote, be voten upon for offices, etc.

The profession of vows whether Temporary or Perpetual are usually done inside the Holy Mass. For Temporary Profession it is there that you will be given your religious habit. So being a legitimate member of the Congregation you can then wear the habit of the Congregation. For both, there is also a signing of the document wherein you are expressing that you are abandoning everything and that you profess the vows freely and voluntarily.

If you want to see the Altar where I did my Temporal and Perpetual Profession as well as the Formula I recited you can see it here:
