Question on Perpetual Virginity of Mary

Anonymous said...

During one of our Couples for Christ prayer meeting, one of the member pointed out a topic that Virgin Mary did not remain virgin all her life.

He said that in Matthew1;24 when Joseph took Mary home as his wife, He had no union or lay with her until the baby was born. So after the birth of the baby (which was Jesus) they lived together as a normal husband and wife in the eye of God and of the people. This person told us that Catholic ussually omit to read this verse to justify that Mary did not have other siblings found in Mark 6:3 named James, Joses, Judas and Simon and also some sisiters whom the people of his hometown Nazareh widely knew He told us that to justify this Catholic say that these mens and women are merely Jesus cousins since those days relatives were having a very closed relesionship with each other, But he said cousin is mention differenly from brother since He said that Elizabeth is Mary's cousin and not specifically sister. That he means that the writer of the bible uses the word brother for brother and cousin for cousin. What can you say about it cause many of us in the group have this beleif that Mama Mary remains virgil all her life. Thanks from Concerned

Dear Anonymous of Couples for Christ:

THAT MEMBER IS HERETICAL AND MUST BE REPORTED TO THE LEADERS OF YOUR GROUP. That topic has been discussed here and have been debated with other commentators in this Blog. Please check the topic: PERPETUAL VIRGINITY OF MARY at the right side of this Blog, in the topic section.

For the meantime here is the short response:

‘UNTIL’ (Heos Hou)

Mt 1:25 “But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”

• The Greek word “heos hou” only emphasizes the Virgin Birth. It assert that up to a definite point in time the marriage was not consummated, but not by any means that it was consummated after this.

• Biblical study reveals that “until” conveys ‘Perpetual’ or ‘Permanent condition’:
2 Sam 6:23 “Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child until the day of her death.” [Does it mean that Michal had children after the day of her death?]

Is 46:4 “And even [until] to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” [Does it mean that when they grow old God ceases to be caring?]

Ps 110:1 “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool”

1 Cor 15:25 “For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet” [Shall the reign of Our Lord stop after he has put all his enemies under his feet? No, because Jesus shall reign forever and ever]

  1. The experience of anonymous from CFC is the reason why I stop joining in a transparochial organization which is not under the direct supervision of the parish priest.Heresies are creeping into the christian life programs.

  2. You've got a very important point there Bro. Tito. Being rooted in our parish is truly a protection against heresies.

By the way Bro. the ADD of Eli Soriano is attacking this Blog. Please check this post:

  3. Me too I resigned being a member of the Couples for Christ for their heretical practices like praying in tounges which they adapted from heretical pentecostal theology, baptism of the Holy Spirit which mocks the Sacrament of Confirmation.their Christian Life Program manual which is more pentecostal in its content than Catholic. During household meetings the household leader uses protestant books as reference rather than Catholic literature. Couples For Christ NEVER emphasized the improtance of the Sacraments especially Confession and Eucharist. Many members of this group no longer believe in what the Church teaches especially in Confession, Eucharist and other moral teachings. They also sell books that indirectly attacks or question the Catholic Faith. Couple for Christ is a ONE WAY TICKET to become a heretic. This is an organization that breeds heretics not Catholics. They no longer uphold the superiority and importance of the Catholic Church in the salvation of souls. This group MUST be monitored or Check by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Phil. if they want to prevent many Catholis from falling to this pitfull of error.

  4. Father Abe,
I came across a program of El Shaddai (I wasn't really watching, just surfin' channels) and there was a question and answer portion lead by Velarde. One member inquired about a sort of "devil's possession" she has been suffering and that she wanted Velarde to "pray her over." Tapos Velarde asked if she's a "binyagan", she answered yes and then Velarde suggested that she should be scheduled for a "baptism renewal(?)" sa kanilang "baptismal swimming pool". I was so troubled and perturbed by this. Meron ba tayong ganung turo? And what right does Velarde has to officiate baptism? And even if priest nga yung nag-ooficiate ng "baptism renewal" nila sa kanilang swimming pool, I still would like to question the doctrinal and dogmatic bases ng kanilang mga action.

  5. Dear Bro. Ivan,

Definitely that is another novel invention of Mike Velarde. There is no such thing as Baptism renewal in swimming pool. Our baptismal renewal is done during Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday Mass.

If the person is having a case of demonic possession Velarde should have advised her to be checked by a priest of the Church or to ultimately go to an official exorcist of the Catholic Church to be checked and for Exorcism if necessary.

It is really a pity that these charismatic groups, although are doing good in the Church, are also must be regulated by priests and Bishops to prevent heresies and strange teachings to creep in.

  6. Dear Father,
