THE SYMBOLUM OF SOMASCAN CHARISM

PROFESSION of the SOMASCAN CHARISM

Guided by the power of God the Father,

the wisdom of the Son

and the strength of the Holy Spirit,

we receive the gift of grace granted to St. Jerome and handed down to us as an experience of the Spirit.

Our Founder converted to God made himself poor

and devoted his whole being to serving the poor.

We believe in the love of God,

who is a father of mercy and infinite tenderness, and intends,

and intends to include us in the number of his beloved children and makes us holy. We trust in him alone, source of all good, for those who have faith and hope in him are filled with charity. We announce his fatherhood, that gives comfort to the poor and consolation to the orphaned.

We believe in the love of the Son,

perfect image of the face of the Father.

We serve the poor as those who best represent Christ to us, and from him, our teacher, we learn how to love them with perfect and active charity, with profound humility and patience.

We follow naked the naked Crucified,

Carrying with him the light burden of the cross.

We believe in the Spirit – Love, Father of the poor,

who unites us as a new family in faith.

We stay with Christ in his own house, we break the bread of brotherhood. We obey our Superiors and our Rule of life

and all together we obey God who commands us to love one another.

We put work, devotion and charity as the foundation of our life.

We believe in the love of Mary,

Mother of graces and liberation force. We recourse to her maternal intercession

asking her to lead us to conversion,

that she may obtain for us a meek

and humble heart capable of reciprocating love with love,

so that along with the whole Church, we may be able to return the holiness that was during the time of the apostles,

and to attract and unite to God the whole of mankind.

'THE GREATNESS' OF THE SERVANT OF GOD JOHN PAUL THE GREAT

One of our readers inquired why our dear Bro. Marwil Llasos called Pope John Paul II 'Great'. It led me to reflect also because the title 'Great' is given only by popular acclamation to some Popes who had served the Church extraordinarily under extraodinary situations. Of course we know Pope St. Gregory the Great and Pope St. Leo the Great who are both Doctors of the Church and have saved the Church during great crisis. Leo protected the Church from the onslought of Attila the Hun and Gregory did the same from the barbarians.
Is John Paul II worthy to be called 'The Great'? I think so. Well, let us bear in mind that this title is not 'officially designated'. It is a popular acclaim by the people and even during the lifetime of JP2 this title was already being attached to him. I think even the secular press reported it during his funeral. Now, I checked the net and Googled 'John Paul the Great' and I was so surprised to see a lot of people and institutions immortalizing this title on the name John Paul II. I respect people who don't want to use add the title though because it is not cumpolsary. Here are some reasons I believe are enough ground for him to be of equal footing with Leo and Gregory:
The Servant of God POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREAT
1. He is the first ever Pope to have visited his flock all over the world. No one has ever done that. By doing so he strengthened the faith of millions and brought inspiration to the hearts of many including non-Catholics. He inspired me with his personal visits in our country and I have seen friends who have become Born Again returned to the Catholic Faith after seeing him in person. They said 'Iba talaga ang original'.
2. He is the greatest Defender of Life in our century together with Mother Teresa of Calcutta. He didn't just issued Encyclical letters [Veritatis Splendor and Evangelium Vitae] to proclaim the faith. He fought publicly against the powerful Clinton administration and the U.N. sponsored Conferences to defend the value of life.
3. Both the Communists and the political leaders of Eastern Europe consider him as one of the two persons responsible for the Collapse of Communism in the region. The other one was Pres. Ronald Reagan of the United States. Both Lech Walesa of Poland, Vaclav Havel of Chekoslovakia and Boris Yeltsin of Russia testified to it. John Paul II was the immovable rock that crushed the Red Dragon of Communism by his support of the Church in Poland and through his strong devotion to Our Lady.
4. He is an Apostle of Youth. During the time that the youth were leaving the Church and attracted to drugs, sex and rebellion this Pope gathered the Youth of the world in a series of encounter with him and dispelled the myths that the Youth is against the Church and against the Pope. What came out instead is that the faithful youth of the world far outnumber those who were gathering in rock concerts and in political rallies.
5. He gave the Church a Universal Catechism to guide our Faith. In the History of the Church only two Popes were able to accomplish such a magnificent project. One was Pope St. Pius V when he issued the Catechism of the Council of Trent and the other John Paul II when he issued the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Actually, the CCC is more comprehensive than that of the Council of Trent and the citations of the Scriptures and Patristic Sources and the works of the Doctors of the Church are more generously given.
6. His development of the theology of the Body and the catechesis of the Family are greatly developed and highly elucidated.
7. He is a man of great holiness. Even his enemies are admitting this. He is a man of great prayer and intense meditation spending ours and hours in silent prayer despite the fact that he is a very active shepherd of the flock.
8. He is a man of great courage who befriended Jews and during the time when doing so could put his life in danger. When he visited Israel a woman testified that when she went out of a concentration camp in Poland, she collapsed on the way. Then a young and very handsome seminarian in black cassock carried her in his shoulders. That seminarian was Karol Wojtila. It was an act of a Good Samaritan and it was the living image of a Good Shepherd.
All Popes from St. Peter to Pope Benedict XVI were criticized and attacked viciously. All of them suffered a lot and had encountered severe crisis in the Church. John Paul II is one of those who rose to the challenges. He confronted the enemies headlong and emerged victorious. He didn't solve all the problems of the Church during his pontificate as had happened to St. Peter, Leo the Great, Gregory the Great, St. Pius V [the Reformation went on], Pius IX and Pius XII and others. There were areas that he failed yet failure is common to all but his greatness lies in his countless achievements.
This title is given to him by many even during his lifetime. Now, his tomb is visited by thousands on a daily basis, his statues are being erected the world over in his honor, universities and colleges named after him, books are written about him and they are bearing the title JOHN PAUL THE GREAT.
**************************************************************
BEHOLD A SLAVIC POPE
Amid discord the Lord God strikes
An immense bell,
Behold, for a Slavic pope
He opens a throne.
This one does not flee before swords
Like that Italian.
He is daring, like God, he goes to the sword:
The world to him is powder!
His face is radiant with the Word,
A lamp for the servant,
Because of him the advancing race goes
Into the light, where God is.
At his prayers and commands
Not only men—
If he commands, the sun stops,
For power—this is a wonder!
Now he draws near—the new dispenser
Of vigor to the globe:
The blood of our veins goes back into our veins
Under his word;
In our hearts the movement begins of floods
Of divine light,
What thought thinks through him, this is created,
For power—this is Spirit.
And power is needed, that we may raise
This lordly world:
Thus here comes a Slavic pope,
A brother of the people;–
Behold, he already pours the world's balm
On our breasts
And the angel-choir sweeps flowers
Toward his throne.
He distributes love, as lords today
Distributes arms.
He displays sacramental power,
The world held in his palm;
To him a dove wings words in hymns,
Bears a report,
Sweet news, that now the Spirit shines
And has His honor;
Above him the beautiful sky is opened
From either side,
For his is grounded in the world and thus are renewed
Both world and throne.
Across nations he acts as brother,
The voice sent forth,
That spirits come to their final end
Through mounds of sacrifices;
Sacramental power avails him for the care
Of the nations,
Power which will be seen through the Spirit
Beofre the coffin here.
In Spirit thus you soon perceive
A phantom, then a face:
From the world's wound he casts out all corruption,
Vermin, reptiles.
He brings health, enkindles love
And saves the world;
He sweeps out the interior of the Churches,
Clears out the entrance,
He shows forth God in the world of creativity,
Bright as day.

AT LAST, AEMILIANUM KNIGHTS WON THE PROVINCIAL CROWN IN PRISAA BASKETBALL!

THE AEMILIANUM KNIGHTS - PRISAA CHAMPION 2009

Last year I posted in this blog the shame we've been through in PRISAA [Private School Athletic Association] in Sorsogon Province. Our drums and buggle was almost non-existent, our cheering squad was judged the poorest in the competitions and our Basketball team was at the bottom as well. And here in the Philippines there is no greater shame in sports competitions than being the poorest in Basketball because for us sports is a one game spectable - BASKETBALL... Basketball is to a Filipino what Soccer is to a Brazilian. It is better to loose in all events except in Basketball. If ever loosing is unavoidable then we must win with dignity and our honor intact.

AITV5 staff Russel Detera and Dan Dioneda, one of the trainees, brought the sports event live for the enjoyment of the people of Sorsogon. Russel is wearing one of the gadgets donated to AITV5 by Bro. Tom Borromeo of Defensores Fidei. The gadgets allow my cameramen 5 of them to be in communication with each other.

We presented this to our former superior, Fr. Richard Germanetto, CRS and he immediately looked for a Basketball coach and once he found him he was tasked to immediately form a fighting team. We inherited that team as new administrators. We supported it with all our heart. The entire school from the professors to the students were energized and found new hope. Then came the BICCS [Basketball Inter-Collegiate Championship of Sorsogon] 2008. Our players at last was winning game after game until we suffered defeat during the Championship. Despite the fact that our players were tall and talented their manner of playing was disordered, they were lacking stamina at the final stretch and obviously there was no game plan prepared before hand. We were happy to be second. We accepted our medals and trophies with joy. But the disappointments in the hearts of students and professors were stronger than the achievement. The former coach had to go and so we found a new one who has better competence and with better game plan to offer.

Some of the Aemilianum Knights with the Aquinas University Phoenix during their invitational game in preparation for the Provincial PRISAA for Sorsogon.

Almost every Aemilian aggrees that we have found 'gold' in our new coach, Sir Aldin Ayo.

First, he is a former Seminarian from Our Lady of PeƱafrancia Seminary in Sorsogon City. It means he is a man with Catholic spirituality and values.

Second, he is a former Aemilian himself who played for the school for a semester until he transferred to Manila. It means his fidelity is beyond question.

Third, he finished AB Philosophy in San Juan de Letran in Manila where he joined its elite varsity team that won the NCAA Championships in 1988 and 1989. It means that he is truly competent as a coach and as educator.

Now, a very successful young enterpreneur Coach Aldin Ayo is known in the entire province as an active promoter of Basketball among the youth.

ACI Students, the players' relatives and the sports afficionados filled our Gymnasium to the rafter to witness the ongoing rivalry in Basketball between Aemilianum Knights and CCDI Wild Cats.

The presence of Coach Aldin brought new dimension in the trainings of our varsity players. He camped them and made them run and play while everything was still dark. He taught them techniques and game plans that we can only dream of. He called off any participations in competitions for 3 months to focus in only one target: PRISAA CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN IN 2009. In effect, the boys increased in speed and in stamina. They gained so much self-confidence and those suffering from inferiority complex found themselves greatly challenged to surpass their weaknesses. The hard work was long, the training very hard and the practices of movements were so boringly repititious. We saw the match up games with various teams in Sorsogon and we witnessed also how the Coach was fuming mad for his boys' failure to implement what had been practiced.

Few days before the PRISAA GAMES Coach Aldin invited the entire varsity team of Aquinas University for a friendly match. It was a test of nerve because the Aquinas Phoenix is the reigning regional champion. The current Regional Champion, the Aquinas University Phoenix right in Aemilianum Gymnasium prior to PRISAA.
What came out during that friendly match was a revelation. The Aemilian Knights were able to dominate the Phoenix by 17 points in the First Half of the Game. They were fast, well organized, systematically playing, excellent in shooting. But of course, the Phoenix were true to their name as well; like the phoenix they rose from the ashes of death. They proved to have possessed the heart of a Champion. They bounced back and pressured the Knights to commit fouls after fouls sending our tall players to Graduation March wtihout diploma. The final buzzer sounded with the Phoenix on top. Our guests were happy and so the entire school. For the first time we saw our players on a different light; they gained our admiration and respect. We lost with honor and we witnessed substantial improvements beyond our expectations. We found out that we can slug it out with the best in the region and with more focus we could have prevailed. Then we were convinced that we will enter the PRISAA ready to sweat it out with our archrival the CCDI Wildcats.
The PRISAA kicked off with us as one of the favorites with our archrival CCDI and Solis College of Irosin the reigning PRISAA Champ. And as expected we demolished our opponents one by one with gusto. Actually the first team who tasted our power was overtaken with more than 30 points. The only difficulty we faced during the eliminations was Solis College whose game was too physical but we prevailed still with a relatively large margin.

Finally, there came the final game and as expected the Knights and the Wildcats met to settle the score. The Wildcats were determined to sweep the titles. They want to get the PRISAA to add to their BICCS crown and also to gain the right of representing Sorsogon Province in the regional meet.
AITV5 Staff giving Full Coverage of the Invitational Game and the PRISAA Competitions. News reporter Salve Villanueva in front with trainee Ronel Divina.
The entire school was up in arms also. The students and professors were there including the Dean and her husband. The employees, the administrators and the priests. Each priest was praying silently in various corner of the gym. While the Law Students who are former seminarians and friends of Coach Aldin set aside the law books they have to prepare for the morning after exams and instead chose to join the Coach and the Knights throughout the final game and even much after.
My technical staff in AITV5 Benjie Diesta, Romeo Jolo, Mr. Rosauro Amistoso, Ricky Anonuevo, Chris SesbreƱo, with trainees Albert Gutierrez. During the first quarter of the game, the CCDI Wildcats immediately reigned supreme over the Knights. Their bodies were more muscular and they seemed to be made of stronger steel. Many of them are veterans of PRISAA and other competitions in the province since they are familiar faces to every body. The Knights were struggling to cope up with them although they themselves were showing signs that they were as fast when it comes to dribbling and passing the ball, it so happened that most of their shots were missing. This is a classic fight between experience and youth and I have read once a Basketball commentator that when two equal teams are fighting it out tooth and nail the one hungrier comes out victorious.

Due to my excitement, I sat quietly in the corner during the games since the opponents were ahead by about 11 points throught the First Half. In effect, I only have this shot on the game itself because I have completely forgotten that I have a camera with me.
The second quarter was like a repetition of the first. The Wildcats were ahead by about 11 points and it even reached 15 at a time. But the Knights have been through this ordeal because during the 2nd game of their best of 3 in BICCS 2008 the Knights overcame the same adversity and extended the series to the do or die situation. This time the Knights were as determined and deadlier than they were 5 months ago. They were behind in points but they were relentless in their offense, they were running as fast and they were faithfully executing a game plan that only their coach and each of them know. The majority crowd was nervous but the Knights were cool under pressure.
Coach Aldin Ayo implimenting his plans during the games.
The First Half ended with fear in our hearts. Fr. Lino our superior went outside the gym to inhale some fresher air. Fr. Manny went to the Convent refectory to take some snacks for he suddenly felt hungry while on my part I rushed to my room to change clothes and chose a lighter one because the clerical one I was wearing was wet on my body. The weather was not so hot and I was wondering why I was sweating like that. I immediately returned to my seat which was near the TV control room and just a meter away from where our Coaching Staff were. Our law students who were former seminarians were on their feet, serving as assistants to Sir Aldin. I sat there to get the chance of hearing the plans and instructions of the Coach, to be fully aware of the 'inside of the game' but was not able to hear or understand anything because my mind was concentrated in prayer while my eyes were closed.

During the quarters that the opponents were ahead like an immovable rock Coach Aldin's trust in his players didn't waver... he led them through with a heart of steel. The 3rd quarter entered with a bang. The Knights intensified their offense and the opponents were committing a lot of errors. And it seems that almost all of our players were scoring so that the quarter ended with the margin of Wildcats reduced to 3. It seemed that the CCDI were slowing down with their heavy muscles while the slender but taller Knights were getting faster in their movements. More scores, more steals and more rebounds.

Trust and cooperation, one heart and mind the team listened to their chief. And together they were able to crack the rocks as they equalled the score at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Due to the almost equal score for both teams the Aemilianum crowd became noisier and it appeared to be affecting the players at the start of the Fourth Quarter. This time they were at their best. They suddenly became so dominant and overtaken the score of the CCDI and surpassed it with 7 points with the last 5 minutes left in the game. But, the Wildcats refused to surrender. They too exploded their own shooters that practically erased the 7 point lead by the Knights but their terrific offense was halted by successive graduations of their players including the tallest one. Then, here comes the best excitement of all: at the final 50 seconds left in the game the two teams exchanged barrage of 3 pointers to put themselves on top over the other by mere one point. The turning point and the point of no return happened mere 7 seconds from the buzzer, our ace player Adrian Escauriaga, nicknamed 'Vaca' scored a two point near the ring and with four seconds left a CCDI Wildcat dribbled the ball and made the last attempt for victory but it missed. The buzzer sounded with a pandemonium shouts of victory in the pews and in the ACI corner. Finally, the Wildcats have been tamed by the Knights... Knights in flashing armor... armor of iron.

I have seen these boys played before. They were talented but rough, they were easily reacting to every call of the referrees, they were erratic and unsure in their moves. But what we have seen during these days of intense competitions are mature boys who were confident, playing systematically and generous in passing the ball to each other as teammates.
True to their form as champions the Wildcats accepted their defeat with grace and dignity. Some were in tears but they embraced the winners warmly and in their turn the winners showed magnanimity in victory. A one point lead victory is still a victory but it is something that must not be rubbed on the other because they too were great and they too were champions. This triumph only made them equal but not higher over the others. The Wildcat players came to me and made their respect asking for blessing including their Coach. He is also very young and very talented. I was informed that he and Coach Aldin are good friends and actually Coach Aldin is the godfather of CCDI Coach's son.

This is the eruption after our star player made the winning shot allowing us to surpass the opposing team by one point.
When the shoutings and screamings and embracing and the high fives were over, Coach Aldin gathered his team right in the middle of the court for a prayer of thanksgiving. The team captain was about to start a prayer but after seeing me both Jeffry Fuller and Coach requested me to lead. I immediately closed my eyes and raised my hands to pray. I remember myself exerting effort not to raise my hands beyond shoulder length as a practice for TLM but when the photos appeared I looked like a charismatic leader. Here is how I remember the prayer:
While the entire Gymnasium was still shouting and jumping with joy at the super intense game, Fr. Abe led the entire team with the full coaching staff in a prayer of thanksgiving that brought tears to the eyes of those around.

"O God our Almighty Father, we praise and thank You because You made us according to Your image and likeness, chose us to be Your children and called us from darkness into Your marvelous light.

O Lord our God we thank You very much for giving us the gift of victory. You alone O Lord knows how we desired it in our hearts. You have seen our sacrifices Lord. You have witnessed how our players are daily practicing their game from the darkness until late in the morning. You have seen Lord how our players separated themselves from their families in order to dedicate their time and energies in honing their skills and in studies.

We praise You Lord for the wisdom of our Coach who mold us into something better than we were before. We praise you because You gave us a coach and his staff who are so knowledgeable in the game and so dedicated in imparting their knowledge with us.

Thank you Lord, thank you Lord for giving us this Championship for the first time in the 23 year history of our College. May You bless us more in every endeavor we take whether in sports or in profession or in life. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Through the intercession of Mary our Queen-Mother and of St. Jerome Emiliani our father and founder. Amen."

The spontaneous prayer of thanksgiving freely flowed from my mouth who was then have changed into simple clothes because my clerical clothes earlier was wet with perspiration most probably caused by excitement.

Since I have my eyes closed later on I was informed that those around me including the Coach, the assistant coach and the volunteer law students and the players were in tears. They were so deeply touched that I offered to the Lord their daily sacrifices of waking up ahead of the roosters and started running and dribbling while the rest of the population was still on bed.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS... OLD PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE HISTORIC SITES IN METRO MANILA

The Old Quiapo area with the Plaza Miranda and the tower of the Basilica of the Black Nazarene.

I took these shots at the rest room of Crown Regency Hotel in Makati City last January 21, 2009 during the KBP General Meeting. One of the KBP officials saw me taking shots on the painting of the famous Filipino painter, Malang and advised me to take also the pictures of the old photographs in the rest room. I did. And now here they are.

This is the Old EDSA or Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. The future site of two People Power Revolution in the Philippines. Now this area is covered by high rise buildings and spacious Malls. The old building seen afar is the Meralco Building, unless I am mistaken.

This is the famous Old Jai-Alai building which is unfortunately demolished already. Unfortunately for the architecture of the building and not on the game. He,he,he... I have never seen a real one.

This is Luneta Park and Rizal Monument. You can compare it with the latest one in the next picture. Check also the previous post.

Bro. Ryan Mejillano in Metro Manila, Part 5 At Rizal Monument

The Rizal Monument

All these pictures with Bro. Ryan in Luneta, Quirino Grandstand and Rizal Monument happened only in a day, actually last December 14, 2008. I decided to present them here not for Bro. Ryan and myself who are grown ups and both are not fond of going around wasting time. Brother was my visitor for only a night and a day before he returned to Davao. As a sign of hospitality I toured him to this historic place instead of a Mall. Being joyful persons that we are, we enjoyed the visit to Luneta as if we are school boys being in this place for the first time.

Fr. Abe before the Rizal monument
I chose to post these pictures because through them I can explain something about our history, our culture and share my thoughts on the religious events that happened here which greatly influenced my life as a Filipino and as Catholic priest. Many Filipinos are visiting the place yet they are not even aware that the first ever Statue of St. Lorenzo de Manila is in Luneta. It has become a mere park, a 'pasyalan' for many without realizing that it is a sacred ground for both Political, Social, Cultural and Religious reasons.
Bro. Ryan in front of Rizal Monument with the Millennium Clock at Quirino Grandstand at his back

The Rizal Monument is for Filipinos as the Lincoln Monument is for the Americans. This is the place where our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, was martyred by the Spanish government and his remains is buried within that hallowed monument. Thus, it is perpetually guarded by two Filipino gendarmes in full regalia.

Bro. Ryan near the Millennium Clock with the High Rise buildings along Roxas Boulevard at the background.

Every visiting Head of State are coming to this monument to offer crown of flowers in honor of the National Hero and of the entire Nation. Respect to this place is a respect to each and every Filipino and desecration to this place is an slap to the face of each and every Filipino.

Bro. Ryan along Roxas Boulevard with the historic Manila Hotel at the background.

It is my prayer that our younger generation will not loose their sense of history and genuine love of country. But that history must not disregard the History of the Catholic Church in the Philippines which is intertwined with our own political and social story. May they be able to recognize the substantial contributions of the Catholic Church for the progress of our nation.

At the giant flagpole of the Philippine Flag with the Rizal Monument at the back

The Catholic Church was the first to develop the educational system in the country. She built our first science centers and its first colleges and universities many of which are still alive and serving. Contrary to the claims of the atheists and the communinists and the Masons the Church has contributed much for this nation. Almost all of our earliest hospitals, orphanages, schools and libraries and dictionaries and historical annals were founded, established or written or collected by our priests, monks and nuns.

As we want our youth to be nationalistic, we don't want them to be close to the goods that other people and nations and culture could bring. Just like Dr. Jose Rizal who was well-travelled, well educated, conversant in many languages we want our youth to be open to the best that other can give so that in return they can be enriched and will enrich others as well.

THE VIRGINITAS IN PARTU [The Virginity of Mary During the Birth of Jesus] by Atty. Marwil Llasos

The Virgin and the Child

This article is originally published in Atty. Marwil Llasos apologetic blog dedicated to the defense of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Here is the link to the original site:

VIRGINITAS IN PARTU: A DEFENSE AGAINST A MODERN HELVIDIUS
I opened my email only yesterday (11 January 2009 – Sunday). It is quite unfortunate that I missed the action – so to speak.
So much ink has been spilled by my post on the issue of Virginitas in Partu. I am grateful to Fr. Abe for calling my post “brilliant.” However, it did not seem to be so to at least a single soul named "Fuschia" (not his real name, to protect his identity. Hereafter, I will rerfer to him as "F" for brevity).
Expulsion
I learned lately that F had already been expelled from this group. I am sad that this had to happen. This extreme disciplinary measure had to be done, after much prayer and discernment, to protect the faith of the other members of the group who may have been scandalized by the clearly heterodox views of F.
While F’s heretical views may be refuted (as have been done by some members of this group, including Fr. A), what I find appalling is his disrespect, if not contempt, to an ordained minister of God. I am referring to F's unwarranted attacks on Fr. A This we cannot allow.
Man’s “ontological” equality with God?
I have been monitoring F’s post in the past. While I credited him with the benefit of the doubt, I must confess that I was concerned with the novelty – nay, heresy – of his positions. For instance, he claimed that man is “ontologically” equal to God. Well, I may not be a philosopher but I know fully well that such claim is absurd and dead wrong. The claim that man can be equal to God, ontological or otherwise, is nothing but satanic presumption. The view that man can be equal to God was first expressed by the infernal serpent in the Garden of Eden. The tempter hissed: “You shall be like God” (Gen. 3:4). When man believed that canard, look what happened! Indeed, to say that man is equal to God, albeit ontologically, still blurs the distinction between the creature and the Creator. That is simply unacceptable. We cannot repackage the diabolical lie by merely coating it with high-sounding philosophical terminology.
Heresies
F’s heresies are alarming. First, he denied Mary’s title of Mother of God. That made him a Nestorian heretic. Instead of immediately recanting his Nestorian belief, he tarried until the opposition was already overwhelming. He went at great lengths justifying his proffered formula that Mary should best be called “Mother of Jesus our God” instead of what the Council Fathers decreed at Ephesus : Theotokos. Fortunately, F recanted – grudgingly.
And – ooops, he did again! This time he questioned the in partu virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. What disgusted me most was the way in which he justified his denial of this aspect of the dogma of perpetual virginity. As Fr. A ably demonstrated, F went to the extent of falsifying or misrepresenting Ludwig Ott just to lend credence to his clearly erroneous view. For questioning Mary’s perpetual virginity, specifically Mary’s virginity in partu, F is clearly in league with the heresiarch Helvidius.
The decision to expel F from the group is in accord with St. Paul ’s admonition: “He who is a heretic, after a first or second admonition, reject!” (Titus 3:10). F had all the opportunity to retract his errors and retrace his steps, but his pride, I believe, stood in the way. It is not yet too late for him to repent, though. And I ask God to flood F with His grace. I offer my prayers to the Blessed Virgin in reparation for F’s blasphemous remarks against Our Blessed Mother, Virgo Castissima.

Virginitas in partu
Since I was the one who posted an article on Mary’s virginitas in partu, and in effect triggered the maelstrom that followed, I am impelled by what I perceive to be my duty to end the controversy. Allow me to add my two cents worth in this issue.
Prefatorily, I must commend applaud for Fr. A for his spirited and vigorous, yet charitable defense of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He led the defense through completion, almost single-handedly. I wish I was with him. As I said, I missed the action because I just opened my email yesterday. Since I have always considered myself the Knight of Mary, I deem it imperative to answer some of F’s claims since he addresses his post specifically to me and Fr. A However, I will not repeat what Fr. A had already stated.
How many Marian dogmas are there?
All of us are aware that there are only four Marian dogmas. These are –
1. Divine Maternity
2. Perpetual Virginity
3. Immaculate Conception
4. The Assumption
As F would have it, the Mary’s virginitas ante partum, in partu and post partum should be treated as three separate dogmas. So how many Marian dogma’s would there be? 4 + 3 = 7? If F would count the Marian dogmas, it would appear –
1. Divine Maternity
2. Perpetual Virginity
3. Virginitas ante partum
4. Virginitas in partu
5. Virginitas post partum
6. Immaculate Conception
7. The Assumption
Of course, that doesn’t make sense. You and I know that there is such a thing as the proposed Fifth Marian Dogma – Mary as Mediatrix, Co-redemptrix and Advocate of the People of God. If Fuschia is right, then the proposed dogma would be the Eighth.
Levity aside, there are just Four Marian dogmas. Virginitas ante partum, in partu and post partum, while each of which are de fide, are mere components or facets of the dogma of Mary’s perpetual virginity. Marian scholar, Msgr. Arthur Burton Calkins states: “It is the Catholic Church’s perennial belief in the three facets of this mystery which immediately touch upon the role of Our Lady that is the specific object fact that she was a virgin before (ante partum), during (in partu) and after the birth of Christ (post partum)” [Msgr. Arthur Burton Calkins, Our Lady’s Perpetual Virginity, in Mariology: A guide for Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, and Consecrated Persons, Mark I. Miravalle, ed. (Goleta: CA, Queenship Publishing, 2007) p. 277]
Understanding virginitas in partu
F’s comments revolved around the difficulty of how Mary’s virginity could remain intact in childbirth. As is F’s wont, he quoted theologians who question, if not assail, Our Blessed Mother’s in partu virginity. All of us are aware of what stripe F’s favorite theologians are – modernists, liberals and materialists. These are the destructive termites in the house of God.

I wish to state that the dogma of Mary’s perpetual virginity is a datum of Divine Revelation; hence, it must be studied using the tools of theology and not gynecology. I mentioned in my previous post that “those who cannot accept Mary’s virginity in partu are thinking in purely human terms. They are trying to explain away the mystery by way of their limited human understanding. They thus rob Divine Revelation of its content.” Then I quoted Isaiah 55:8: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.”
I find it amusing that there are people who have great difficulty in accepting a lesser miracle, i.e., how the Mother of the Savior remained a virgin at childbirth? The greater miracle is how can a virgin be pregnant without the aid of a man? If we can accept the greater miracle, then there is no rhyme or reason why we cannot accept the lesser one. To question how Mary remained a virgin in childbirth is to question the omnipotence of God. “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
Personally, I still grapple with the dogmas and the doctrines of the Church. Nevertheless, I am grateful to the Good Lord for revealing to me through His Church the truths of our holy faith. Oftentimes, the Church merely defines the ultimate truth (for example, Mary is a perpetual virgin before, during and after the birth of her Son Jesus Christ) without giving us the details. When Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption, he merely said that at the completion of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory without settling the question of whether or not the Blessed Mother died. The Church tells us what without telling us how.
The Incarnation, the Virgin Birth and Mary’s perpetual virginity, are God’s initiative, not man’s. These are spiritual things that are spiritually discerned. The Apostle Paul reminds us: Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural (sensual) man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:12-14, NKJV). Notice that only the natural (or the sensual) man that do not receive the things of the Spirit. Tell that to the Modernists and Liberals.
Indeed, God’s truths would always remain a mystery for us. Confronted with these sublime and saving truths, I couldn’t help it but be awed and prostrate myself to thank and worship the God who reveals them.
The late Holy Father John Paul II the Great says in his discourse at Capua on May 24, 1992 –
The theologian must approach the mystery of Mary’s fruitful virginity with a deep sense of veneration for God’s free, holy and sovereign action. Reading through the writings of the holy Fathers and the liturgical texts we notice that few of the saving mysteries have caused so much amazement, admiration or praise as the Incarnation of God’s Son in Mary’s virginal womb.

The theologian, however, who approaches the mystery of Mary’s virginity with a heart full of faith and adoring respect, does not thereby forego the duty of studying the data of Revelation and showing their harmony and interrelationship; rather, following the Spirit … he puts himself in the great and fruitful theological tradition of fides querens intellectum.
When theological reflection becomes a moment of doxology and latria, the mystery of Mary’s virginity is disclosed, allowing one to catch a glimpse of other aspects and other depths” [AAS 85 (1993) 664, quoted in Msgr. Arthur Burton Calkins, Our Lady’s Perpetual Virginity, in Mariology: A guide for Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, and Consecrated Persons, Mark I. Miravalle, ed. (Goleta: CA, Queenship Publishing, 2007) p. 282].
Biblical texts
In my post on the virginitas in partu, I cited prophetic text of Isaiah 7:14 and its fulfillment text in Matthew 1:23: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” I contented that these texts clearly prove not only Mary’s ante partum virginity but also her in partu virginity. I concluded that these verses - a prophetic text and a fulfillment text - tell us that the virgin shall be a virgin not only in conceiving her child but also a virgin in giving birth to her son.
F, citing his usual sources, concluded that there are no explicit nor implicit verses to support Mary’s in partu virginity! I will let Mariologist Dr. Mark Miravalle answer that point –
“Scripture implicitly affirms Mary’s virgin birthing of Our Lord in the great prophecy of Isaiah 7:14. The prophecy foretells that a virgin, beyond conceiving, will also bear a Son as a virgin: “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.” Therefore, it is not only a virgin’s conception, but also a virgin birth alluded to in Isaiah 7:14” [Mark I. Miravalle, Introduction to Mary ( Goleta , CA : Queenship Publishing, 2006) p. 58].
Church Fathers
Without shred of proof, F further contended that no Church Father ever cited the Bible verses I mentioned.
Justin Martyr, as far as I know, is a Church Father. In his Dialogue with Trypho, he discussed Isaiah 7:14 to defend the Virgin Birth.
I also cited John 1:13 using the alternative rendering footnoted in the New Jerusalem Bible in relation to Mary’s virginity in partu. “Who was born not from human stock or human desire or human will but from God Himself.” Exegete and Marian scholar Ignace de la Potterie, S.J., rendered it –
He is born not of blood(s),
nor of the will of the flesh
nor of the will of man,
but he was begotten of God.
[See Ignace de la Potterie, Mary in the Mystery of the Covenant (Staten Island, NY: St. Paul’s, 1992) p. 136].
De la Potterie, following the doctoral thesis of Peter Horftrichter, sees a scriptural indication for John 1:13 (above) for the virginitas in partu, the virginity of the birthing of Jesus. De la Potterie proved his rendering of John 1:13 by pointing out that “all the texts from the second century witnessing to our passage have the singular. An in addition, it is interesting to notice that all these witnesses, when they are localized geographically, are not concentrated in one area, but are diffused over the Mediterranean basin: in Asia Minor, most likely in Palestine (Justin), at Rome (Hippolytus), in Gaul (Irenaeus), in Northern Africa (Tertullian), and at Alexandria in Egypt. That is a very important fact because it demonstrates that it demonstrates that in the second century, during a time in which rapid means of communication did not yet exist, this text was universally read only in the singular. And this within one century of the composition of the Fourth Gospel!” [Ignace de la Potterie, Mary in the Mystery of the Covenant (Staten Island, NY: St. Paul’s, 1992) p. 137].
De la Potterie, following the doctoral thesis of, Peter Horftrichter argues that “in several Old Testament texts and later in Jewish tradition, the word “blood” also used in the plural for the loss of blood which is linked with a woman’s period; that is with menstruation and childbirth, hence of a birth.” Thus, “in the context for the laws of purification it signifies that Jesus, in being born, did not cause an effusion of blood in his mother; in other words, at the birth of Jesus there would not have taken place any shedding of blood. There would then be here a scriptural indication for what the theologians have in mind when they speak of the “virginitas in partu,” the virginity of the birthing of Jesus” [Ignace de la Potterie, Mary in the Mystery of the Covenant (Staten Island, NY: St. Paul’s, 1992) p. 148-149].
CONCLUSION
To deny the dogma of perpetual virginity of Mary in any of its components or facets makes one a heretic which incurs the penalty of latae sententiae excommunication.
To the early Church Fathers the contrary doctrine was called “madness and blasphemy” (Gennadius, De dogm. eccl., lxix), “madness” (Origen, in Luc., h, vii), “sacrilege” (St. Ambrose, De instit. virg., V, xxxv), “impiety and smacking of atheism” (Philostorgius, VI, 2), “perfidy” (St. Bede, hom. v, and xxii), “perfidy of the Jews” (Pope Siricius, ep. ix, 3), and “heresy” (St. Augustine, De HƦr. h., lvi).
St. Jerome had the most colorful words for the opponents of Mary’s perpetual virginity: “I was requested by certain of the brethren not long ago to reply to a pamphlet written by one Helvidius. I have deferred doing so, not because it is a difficult matter to maintain the truth and refute an ignorant boor who has scarcely known the first glimmer of learning, but because I was afraid my reply might make him appear worth defending!” (Adversus Helvidium). If St. Jerome were still alive and would write a treatise against F and his theologians, I wonder if he would also call each of them an “ignorant boor.” Without meaning to offend our dear brother F, I was just wondering…
I wish to end by pointing to the lot of A. Mitterer, the theologian quoted by F with gusto. Dr. Albert Mitterer’s 1952 study Dogma und Biologie which questioned Our Lady’s physical integrity and the absence of pain resulted in a monitum issued by the Holy Office (now the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) stating that “theological works are being published in which the delicate question of Mary’s virginity in partu is treated with a deplorable crudeness of expression and, what is more serious, in flagrant contradiction to the doctrinal tradition of the Church and to the sense of respect the faithful have” and thus prohibiting the publication of such dissertation in the future. Mitterer’s work is condemned!
Fuschia can opt to stay on the side of Helvidius, or of Mitterer and his favorite theologians. We at apologia should stay on the side of Our Holy Mother the Church. As defenders of the faith, we can do no less. We should be part of the solution, not the problem.
The Church understands Mary’s virginity during the birth of Christ as an absence of any physical injury or violation to Mary’s virginal seal through a special divine action of the all-powerful God. This divine act would safeguard Mary’s physical virginity which is both a symbol and part of her perfect, overall virginity; a virginity both internal and external, of soul and of body.
The Fathers of the Church overwhelmingly taught the “miraculous birth” of Jesus that resulted in no injury to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s physical integrity. St. Augustine stated that “it is not right that He who came to heal corruption should by His advent violate integrity” (Sermo 189, No. 2; PL 38, 1005).
Doctors of the Church like St. Thomas Aquinas defended the miraculous and painless nature of Christ’s birth (ST, III, Q. 28, a. 2).
The Magisterium of the Church teaches it in no unmistakable terms. Pope St. Leo the Great in his famous Tome to Flavian made it clear that Mary’s physical virginity was protected in the process of the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ: “Mary brought Him forth, with her virginity untouched, as with her virginity untouched she conceived Him” (Enchiridium Patristicum 2182).
Pope Paul IV, in Cum quorumdam hominum, admonished all who deny that the Blessed Virgin Mary did not retain her virginity intact before the birth, in the birth, and perpetually after the birth.”
The Roman Catechism (Catechism of the Council of Trent) continued the succession of papal and conciliar teaching on how Jesus was born without injuring Our Lady’s virginity and without any experience of pain:
For in a way wonderful beyond expression or conception, He is born of His Mother without any diminution of her maternal virginity. As he afterwards went forth from the sepulcher while it was closed and sealed, and entered the room in which his disciples were assembled, although “the doors were closed” (Jn. 20:19), or, not to depart from natural events which we witness every day, as the rays of the sun penetrate the substance of glass without breaking or injuring it in the least: so, but in a more incomprehensible manner, did Jesus Christ come forth from His Mother’s womb without injury to her maternal virginity…
To Eve it was said: “in pain you shall bring forth children” (Gen/ 3:16). Mary was exempt from this law, for preserving her virginal integrity inviolate, she brought forth Jesus the Son of God, without experiencing, as we have already said, any sense of pain.”
Vatican II reiterates the traditional teaching of the Church: “This union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christ’s virginal conception … then also at the birth of Our Lord, who did not diminish his mother’s virginal integrity but sanctified it … (LG, No. 57).
The Catechism of the Catholic Church clarifies that “the deepening of faith in the virginal motherhood led the Church to confess Mary’s real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to the Son of God made man” (CCC No. 499).
PRAYER
I end this rejoinder with a prayer I borrow from St. Jerome , the great defender of Mary’s perpetual virginity:
I must call upon the Holy Spirit to express His meaning by my mouth and defend the virginity of the Blessed Mary. I must call upon the Lord Jesus to guard the sacred lodging of the womb in which He abode for ten months from all suspicion of sexual intercourse. And I must also entreat God the Father to show that the mother of His Son, who was mother before she was a bride, continued a Virgin after her Son was born ( St. Jerome , De perpetua virginitate Beatae Mariae adversus Helvidium. Migne, Patrology, PL 23, 183-206).
Viva Jesus y Maria!
Viva la Virgen!
Viva SeƱor San Jose!
