POPE PIUS XII SAVED THOUSANDS OF JEWS SAYS CARDINAL RUINI

The Servant of God, Pope Pius XII

Rome, Italy, May 28 (CNA).-The Vicar Emeritus of the Diocese of Rome has penned a personal article about his childhood and adolescence during the pontificate of Pius XII, who he said reached out to the Jews and laid the foundation for the Second Vatican Council. In the article published by the L'Osservatore Romano, Cardinal Camilo Ruini recounts his memories of the first Pope he remembers as a youngster, Pius XII, and how as a seminarian he felt a special closeness with the Pope. "The devotion to him and affection for him were an essential aspect of the atmosphere of the school and of our ecclesial and spiritual experience," he wrote.

Cardinal Ruini went on to address the black legend surrounding Pius XII for supposedly not helping the Jews during World War II. "I can say that during my years as a youth (…) I never heard criticism of the Pope over this issue, only praise and gratitude," the cardinal said, adding that one of his most vivid memories is "of everything Pius XII did to save the greatest number of Jews possible, while nobody said anything about his 'silence.'"

For the cardinal, "it was obvious, in the atmosphere and ecclesial praxis of the time," that if many "priests and religious communities, and the Vatican itself, had taken in and saved many persecuted Jews, that is ... it could not have been done without the encouragement and consent of the Pope."

Since the concrete conditions of the Nazi occupation were a fresh reality, hypothesizing about the public condemnations that Pius XII could have made was not even on people's minds, Ruini recalled.

"Honestly, at that time the controversy that was to be unleashed not many years later could not have been imagined," the cardinal said.

Referring later to the theology of Pius XII, who laid the foundation for Vatican Council II, Cardinal Ruini explained that this historical event in the Church "has inspired perspectives that were new, or better yet, more in conformity with the ancient tradition, in order to understand the Service of the Successors of Peter."

For this reason, the cardinal said, "the Pontificate of Pius XII has a connection to the period which preceded him, which those of us who lived during both periods know by experience, but it also laid the groundwork for new developments, likewise known by experience by those of us who were nourished during our youth by his Magisterium and his testimony of dedication to Christ and care for the human race."

POPE'S WEBSITE RECEIVED HALF A MILLION VISIT ON FIRST DAY

Pope Benedict XVI connects with People

Vatican City, May 26 (CNA).-On its first day online, the new website enabling young people from around the world to get to know Pope Benedict XVI, received almost half a million visits.According to webmaster Father Paolo Padrini of Vatican Radio, the website sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Laity is intended "to create a climate of belonging, of participating in the Church, through ever greater closeness with the Holy Father."

The new site, which allows users to learn the teachings of Benedict XVI on Facebook, download tools for iPhones and have access to the Vatican on Youtube, sent out "almost ten thousand virtual postcards on its first day" and received almost "half a million visits."

Father Padrini noted that what "is on Facebook is not a profile, but rather a place to share, because the Pope obviously does not need a profile to introduce himself…Dialogue with him is dialogue based on our daily realities of school, work, and the parish. This is promoted by him and is later made concrete in the sharing of our friends on the internet."

The 25th Anniversary of Consecrated Life in the Somascan Congregation by Bro. Eugene Libut, CRS

Our Bro. Joseph Eugene Libut, CRS or Dr. Eugene Libut, Ph.Ed in academic circle, before the celebration of the Holy Mass commemorating the 25th Anniversary of his First Religious Profession in the Somascan Congregation.

Actually the Anniversary of Bro. Eugene is exactly this coming May 27, 2009. We decided to celebrate it earlier because of the presence of Fr. Provincial and the delegates of Casa Miani Foundation from the 5 branches it has in the Philippines.

The Holy Altar of the St. Jerome Emiliani Chapel

Bro. Eugene wanted a simple celebration and he wanted it to be a celebration among family and friends. Well, family here refers to the Somascan Religious and friends are the faculty and staff of our school and the guests who are lay coordinators of the Somascans in its 5 Houses of Charity.

Our Superior Fr. Lino Juta, CRS, our Provincial Superior Fr. Gabriele Scotti, CRS, Bishop Jesus Y. Varela, D.D. Bishop Emeritus of Sorsogon, Fr. Luigi Brenna, CRS superior of Casa Miani in Cebu and Vicar General of the Southeast Asia Vice Province, and our good friend Msgr. Francisco Monje.

Bishop Varela was invited because he was the one who invited the Somascan Order in Sorsogon and the one who guided and supported our growth in the same Diocese. Also, Msgr. Monje was the Vicar General during that time and he was most supportive of the Somascan Congregation.

After the Mass only a very short program followed consist of the Brother's Address which was also very short, a song touchingly rendered by Mr. Donovan and a song 'The Journey' by Ms. Lea Salonga performed by our High School faculty. Dinner followed with the guest in the Conference Hall while others were accommodated in a candle lit tables infront of the Conference Hall.

OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO BRO. EUGENE FOR THIS HISTORIC EVENT IN HIS RELIGIOUS LIFE.

This is very special for me because Bro. Eugene, like Fr. Lino was my Prefect of Discipline and one of the Teachers in the Seminary during my early days. He's been very kind and supportive to the young seminarians then.

I was also honored to choose the motto for this event and I chose the words of St. Jerome Emiliani to Fr. Agostino Barili in his Epistula: "Let us pray that the Lord will grant us the grace to persevere until the end..." So, I chose that last portion and presented it to Brother and he was delighted. Thus, his motto for the occasion is: TO PERSEVERE UNTIL THE END!

May you really persevere Brother Eugene... until the end. And may the Lord grant us to achieve the same.
