Sen. Pangilinan asked Roxas to give way to Sen. Noynoy Aquino

Senator Noynoy Aquino

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas was urged Monday to give way to Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III if the latter decides to seek the presidency.

Senator Francis Pangilinan said he was also willing to give up his vice presidential ambition if only to unite their group, the Liberal Party, and throw their support for Aquino.

“I know Mar and his family have given up so much as well in preparations for 2010, and this too will be a huge sacrifice on their part,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

“But nothing is more important than sacrificing or our country and for the change we desperately need as a nation,” he said.

“I, too, am more than willing to sacrifice by giving up my VP bid if this is necessary to unite and rally all forces committed to genuine change behind Aquino’s presidential bid,” he said.

Pangilinan, Roxas and Aquino all belong to LP.

But for his to happen, Pangilinan said, Aquino must first set aside his own reservations and take on the challenge to seek the presidency.

“He (Aquino) has expressed his reluctance because of the reservations of his family. We can only imagine the pain and hardships their family has suffered all these years, but we appeal to him and the family to continue the legacy of sacrifice of their parents by setting aside their reservations and take on the challenge for genuine political change.” Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan also called on the LP “to take on the challenge of providing the country a viable standard bearer that will lead the coalition for change and other forces of reform.”

“Let us unite and make a sacrifice so we could give the people an alternative in 2010. This is not just a fight of LP. This is a fight of the force for change,” he said.

“Let’s encourage the Liberal Party and all reform blocks to support the candidacy of Noynoy and carry on the fight of Ninoy and Cory,” Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan said the party did not have the luxury of time since the deadline for the filing of candidacy is fast approaching.

"We cannot waste a minute longer in political intramurals. We need to build a ‘people’s army’ that will wage an electoral revolt against ‘trapo’ politics. The reformist forces must unite at the earliest possible time,” he said.

“Only when the nation’s leaders show a willingness to sacrifice will the people in their millions be inspired to do their share for the cause of genuine change,” the senator added.

Roco party wants Noynoy to be standard bearer

Filipinos honoring the late Pres. Cory
The political party of the late Senator Raul Roco on Monday urged Senator Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III to be its standard bearer for the 2010 elections.
"As raw and unassuming as he is, he is the best bet for president. It is our duty to help him become better enabled," said Aksyon Demorkratiko (AD) chair Sonia Roco, Raul’s wife, during a press conference at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City. In explaining the party’s decision, Mrs. Roco said the son of former President Corazon Aquino and opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr. "has the moral character and the emotional strength to withstand the slings and arrows of the outrageous breakdown for our sociopolitical systems."
In an open letter dated August 26, Mrs. Roco said she formally invited Noynoy to run for president. "We are ready to proclaim you (Aquino) as standard bearer for President of the Philippines. If by God’s good grace, you accept, then we can meet and plan the details together," she said.
Noynoy had been coy about his plans for the 2010 elections. On Sunday, the senator did not show up at GMA-7’s “Eleksyon 2010 na, Tatakbo Ka Ba?" fun run because he said he was "still undecided" on his political plans. The gathering, which drew about 5,000 people, was attended by 13 presidential and vice presidential hopefuls who vowed they would ensure clean and honest elections in 2010. The event was broadcast live on television and via livestream on GMANews.TV.
Senator Aquino, who belongs to the Liberal Party, is reportedly being eyed to be the running mate of would-be standard bearer Senator Manuel Roxas II. But Noynoy, whose term will expire in 2013, hinted he did not have any intention of seeking a higher position yet. I do not relish aspiring for a higher office at this point in time. The focus should be on performing my functions and my duties and responsibilities in this present mode and I have to highlight that given the current administration, we are not in a normal situation," he said. ‘They’ve built a shrine for Ninoy and Cory’

Pres. Cory Aquino and Sen. Ninoy Aquino, Conjugal Heroes

It wasn’t just the traditional flowers and candles that adorned the tombs of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. and his wife, Corazon.
In the commemoration of Ninoy’s 26th death anniversary on Friday, hundreds of Filipinos went to the Manila Memorial Park and brought all sorts of memorabilia to show how the country’s pillars of democracy have touched them personally.
A charcoal illustration of the couple, handwritten notes from elementary students, a campaign material during 1978 elections where Ninoy ran for senator , items handed to mourners during the wake of Corazon.
These were only some of the reasons why Corazon’s sister-in-law Margarita “Tingting" Cojuangco exclaimed: “They’ve built a shrine for Ninoy and Cory." Tingting is the wife of Jose “Peping" Cojuangco Jr., Corazon’s brother.
Roger Ocampo’s “gift" to Mrs. Aquino was a glass-case containing refreshments handed out to mourners who lined up for hours during the former Philippine leader’s wake at the Manila Cathedral.
Ocampo said that Mrs. Aquino was the president he most loved. “These mineral water bottles are only what were left of that experience. By enclosing them in this case, it’s like telling Cory that she will always remain in my heart."
Another mourner grabbed everyone’s attention when she knelt in front of the tombs for more than an hour. Estelle Camute, a 43-year-old Samar native, said she wanted to pray intently for Benigno and Corazon. “May panata ako, at kasama lagi sa dasal ko sila Ninoy at Cory (I have a devotion to God, and I always include Ninoy and Cory in my prayers)," she said.
A mourner also left a basket of eggs at the Aquino mausoleum. Onlookers say that Philippine superstition has it that eggs help carry the dead make the journey to the afterlife easier.
Youngsters also made their affection felt even if they were born more decades after the tumultous Martial Law years, Benigno’s death in 1983, and the historic 1986 People Power Revolution that brought Corazon to the presidency – proof that the couple’s impact spans all generations.
“Maraming salamat, Cory at Ninoy," read one note by a Grade 3 student. “We love you Tita Cory. We will never forget you, mother of democracy," read another.
Grace Marasigan, said she brought her four-year-old son Vincent to the Aquino memorial park so she can acquaint him with the feats and ideals of Corazon and Benigno.
Asked why he decided to tag along with his mother, Vincent said: “Gusto ko makita lolo at lola ni Baby James (I want to see the grandparents of Baby James)," referring to the couple’s grandson Baby James Yap, son of television personality Kris.
Outside the Manila Memorial Park, small entrepreneurs made quite a profit by selling shirts and items that showcase the Filipinos’ love and respect for the couple.
Mang Andy, one of the several shirt vendors, already sold 500 pieces of shirt by midday. His sales had already doubled during the afternoon. Given that each piece costs P100, Mang Andy went home happy today.
Indeed, the country went on a standstill during the month of August when it mourned Corazon’s death, but celebrated her reunion with “her only love."
By the sunset of August 21, many people who came from all parts of the country returned to their homes, vowing that they would continue what Benigno and Corazon fought for.
As Ninoy and Cory supporter Rose Dagundon says: “The flowers will wilt, the candlelights will be snuffed out, but Ninoy and Cory will live on in our hearts." - GMANews.TV

WE ARE told to wear yellow for Benigno Aquino III. Tie a yellow ribbon, wear a yellow shirt, remember the woman in glasses, remember the man in the bloodied white suit. Show him that you are behind him, he says, and he will stand for you.

He is aware that some have raised issues of his inexperience. “Some said I’m not yet ripe for the picking.”

There is only one reason for Noynoy Aquino to join the mad race for the 2010 presidency. It is because he is Ninoy’s son and Cory’s child, his father dead with a promise on his lips and a bullet lodged at the side of his neck, his mother the lady in yellow who rose to battle when she could have knelt and wept. When Ninoy Aquino bled on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport, his wife’s candidacy was forged by a nation so desperate it was willing to settle for a presidential candidate whose only qualification was the dull gleam of a wedding ring.

Cory Aquino did not win that election alone. Chino Roces won it, when he plodded from office to office, collecting signatures to demonstrate the people’s support. Eggie Apostol and Joe Burgos won it, with issue after issue of their publications raising sneering middle fingers to the Marcos censors. And, some have forgotten, Doy Laurel won it, by setting aside a lifetime of presidential aspiration and allowing the opposition to make way for a woman who said she did not want the presidency.

And there is the crux of next year’s elections: a great wide field of hand-shaking, jingle-humming, speech-making would-be oppositionist presidents and their phalanx of spin doctors and kingmakers. They struggle against a Goliath, they say. 2010 is the time to loose the hands of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from its tenacious hold on the ship of state.

So they send out their press releases and smile at the reporters. Here are the chosen men of God – although it must be an uncertain God to have three men of the cloth announce the blessing of heaven. Here are the reformists, the patriots, the people’s champions, all kissing babies and answering on cue, each and every one – and their wives – preparing for the presidency. None have acknowledged the fact that their candidacies are thinning the margins of an already fragmented opposition, while the administration carefully primes its one candidate.

I know very little of Noynoy, and even his greatest supporters have little to say of his achievements in his two years as senator of the republic. He seems to have little of his father’s eloquence, and less of his mother’s appealing charm. It is difficult to admit that this country is so desperate for leaders that this man may walk down the campaign path on the strength of no more than the accident of genetics – this boy born of heroes, pushed by fate and faith into a rain of yellow confetti, with little to commend him other than his hesitation.

And yet there is the possibility it will be enough, that the weight of giants at his back may propel him all the way to the Palace. The question depends not so much on whether he can achieve support, the question is what will happen if he does. The danger of a vote split four, five, six ways across opposition candidates is very real. And so Noli de Castro will run on the administration treadmill, powered by the machinery of the national government against a scattershot of messiahs and champions, none willing to compromise their grand sacrifices of serving the nation.

Look at the landscape. Manny Villar pulls away at the polls, his several advertising agencies doing justice to the millions he paid in prime time airing. Mar Roxas says there is no turning back, as he pedals on to 2010. “I want to make big changes in our country and the presidency is the only vantage point at which that can be done.” Jamby Madrigal has “crossed the Rubicon,” Eddie Villanueva runs under what he described as “politics of God,” Mike Velarde is “dreaming of becoming president,” Joseph Estrada is “99.9 percent” sure of running if the opposition does not field a single candidate and Loren Legarda believes she can only save Mother Earth “if I am president of my country.”
There are many who question Noynoy’s inexperience, and it is right they do. But these are desperate times, and in the same way I’d rather see an untried college professor who would rather spend his time watching birds sitting in the Pampanga House of Representatives, I’ll take Ninoy’s son if he can bring the nation at his feet.
Governor Ed Panlilio has already offered his bid for the presidency to the young senator, and as slim as Panlilio’s chances are, it is the sort of gesture that demonstrates the sort of human spirit that launched a singing revolution in the face of a cannon’s mouth. Roxas will not bend to Estrada, neither will Villar bow to Escudero, but they might for Ninoy’s son and Cory’s child.

“Many ask why I remain undecided,” Aquino says. “In the first place, I had no plans of running for higher office. It’s not an easy job. I ask you, how many can honestly raise their hands and volunteer to take on this great responsibility? You have to think it over before you accept the challenge. You don’t want to fail. Most important, you don’t want to fail those who believe in you.”
Of course he can be another paper doll hero, to be dressed up and discarded in the same pile as Jun Lozada and Joker Arroyo. There can only be one Cory Aquino, but it was her example that demonstrated how integrity in leadership is not contingent on political experience, it is dependent on character. I do not know if Noynoy is what this nation needs, but if he can ride on the shoulders of his parents all the way to 2010, and bend the opposition to his will, I’ll take what comes after on faith.

'Noynoy for President' signature drive launched

National Hero, Sen. Ninoy Aquino
MANILA - A group has launched a signature campaign to convince Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III to run for president in 2010.

The Noynoy Aquino for President Movement (NAPM) is intent on garnering 1 million signatures for the cause.

Leading the NAPM is Ed Roces, son of Joaquin "Chino" Roces, the former Manila Times publisher who launched a "Cory Aquino for President" signature drive on October 15, 1985.

Chino Roces garnered 1.2 million signatures in just 41 days (35 days ahead of their self-imposed deadline), which encouraged Cory to run for president against dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

To get a pulse of the public's sentiments on Sen. Aquino's possible bid for the presidency, the NAPM gathered signatures at the Baclaran Church on Wednesday. The group said they got over 2,000 signatures.

The group plans to put sign-up booths in schools and strategic locations in the regions to prove that Sen. Aquino has the public's vote of confidence.

Public good

Just like his father before him, Ed Roces said the NAPM's only motive is to support a candidate whom they think will do good for the country.

"We believe that this guy Noynoy will not betray us. May tiwala sa kanya ang mga tao, he cannot turn his back on this," said Ed Roces in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

Political analyst Edna Co, meanwhile, believes that the public's support for Sen. Aquino's possible 2010 bid stems more from his clean political track record rather than from sympathy over the recent death of his mother, former president Corazon "Cory" Aquino.

"The people who are not hungry for power are better suited for positions of power," she said.

Sen. Aquino, however, still has not decided on the issue. Aside from the number of signatures that the NAPM gets, he said his decision will also depend largely on his family's support.

Despite the public's initial support for the campaign, the Aquino family still wants to pray and think hard on the issue, not only for their brother's own good, but also for the public good. Report by Jing CastaƱeda, ABS-CBN News.

Senator Mar Roxas willing to give way to Senator Noynoy presidential run

MANILA - Senator Mar Roxas said Saturday that he is willing to slide down to running as vice-president if his best friend, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, decides to seek the presidency and gets the support of the Liberal party.

"Ako naman po ay masunurin din. Nakikinig sa tao at nakikinig sa tawag ng panahon," Roxas told radio dzMM when asked what he will do if Aquino decides to run and gets the support of the people and their political party.

The senator confirmed that he and Aquino will meet this weekend to discuss the possibility of running as partners in 2010. He said there have been ideas of a Mar-Noynoy tandem even before Aquino's mother, former President Corazon Aquino, died.

"Dahil sa magkapartido kami, isa iyan sa mga nakukunsidera. Kung may pagbabago, siguro si Senator Noynoy lang ang makakapagsabi (Since we belong to the same party, [us running in tandem] is one of the considerations. Only Senator Noynoy can say if he had changed his mind)," Roxas said.

Roxas said the weekend meeting between him and Aquino will be succeeded with more meetings and consultations within the party's top members.

In an earlier interview, Aquino said the Liberal party has various mechanisms in place to choosing the best bet for the presidential elections in May 10, 2010.

Aquino said he has yet to validate the reported clamor for him to seek higher office in 2010. There were reports that Aquino is asking his supporters to wear yellow this weekend to help him decide what higher position to run for in the elections.

Roxas, for his part, said he is still determined to run for president and take the lead to reform the country, but he is also ready to bow down to the people's clamor and his party's decision.

"Ako ay handa nang magsilbi. Sana mabigyan ako ng pagkakataon (I'm ready to serve. I hope I will be given a chance)," he said, adding that he will not bolt the party and stick to Aquino's side if ever they decide against his desire to run for president.

Noynoy for president campaign reaches Iloilo

Sen. Noynoy and his mother, Pres. Cory

The campaign urging Noynoy to run for president has reached Iloilo province.
News Today reported that Iloilo-based lawyer Daniel Cartagena would lead the signature campaign to convince Sen. Benigno Simeon Aquino III to seek the highest post in next year’s elections.
“I think history repeats itself in this scenario. In 1986, Cory was not actually the first choice to run for president, it was Doy Laurel," said Cartagena."
But public demand and uncontrolled circumstances twisted the situation, Cory ran for president and Laurel slide down for the vice presidency," the lawyer added.
Liberal Party stalwarts led by LP chairman emeritus Jovito Salonga are pushing for a Mar-Noynoy tandem in 2010, with Noynoy as vice presidential running mate of Sen. Manuel "Mar" Roxas.
Calls for the senator to seek the presidency has grown stronger after the death of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, last August 1 and the 26th death anniversary of his father, Benigno “Ninoy" Aquino Jr., on August 23.
Noynoy is already considering a possible run for the 2010 polls under the LP. He said he would be making an announcement soon.
He said three factors would influence his decision on running for president: (1) his ability to guarantee that there really will be meaningful changes for society and the country (2) availability of logistics for his electoral campaign and (3) the sentiments of his four sisters on his presidential bid.
The senator is expected to come out with his decision on September 9, which marks the end of the 40-day mourning for his mother.
A signature campaign for Noynoy’s candidacy for president has already started in Metro Manila headed by a group that convinced Mrs. Aquino to run for president in the 1986 snap elections called by then President Ferdinand Marcos.
The campaign’s prime mover is Edgardo Roces, son of newspaperman Joaquin “Chino" Roces.
Cartagena said the signature campaign for Noynoy that he will spearhead in Iloilo is his own initiative and is not connected with the signature drive being undertaken by Roces’ group.
“Anyway we have the same objective which is to convince Noynoy Aquino to run for president," Cartagena said. - GMANews.TV

KBP SORSOGON CHAPTER MEDIA OLYMPICS 2009, Part 4 Opening Program

The Participants preparing for the Opening Ceremony after the Motorcade

After the joyful and colorful motorcade from Capitol Building to the downtown City then to the Municipal Building where Mayor Leovic Deoneda greeted them form the City Hall's veranda, then to Aemilianum College, the Media Olympics finally started with a bang.

KBP Sorsogon Secretary Ms. Jing Rey hosted the Opening Program
The Opening Ceremony can rival that of the Beijing Olympics not in fireworks or budget but in intensity of hilarity generated among the participants. Even though the cheerings and the presentations of each group were made impromptu 20 minutes before the actual ceremony each them truly made their talents shine by delivering comic strips on the spots like a pro. Indeed, media people are very talented ones.
Oath of Sportsmanship
On the spot rap songs were composed, modern dances were performed with aplomb and comedy skits made our stomachs hurt with laughter. The Oath of Sportsmanship became a mere icing on the cake with the improvised shows stealing the thunders from the formally prepared number.

Despite the continuous joyfullness of the participants the atmosphere became serious during the Oath of Office and the introduction of the new Regional Director of National Telecommunication Commission [NTC]. Mr. Ariel Padilla congratulated the KBP Sorsogon for the wonderful program and promised to bring the NTC closer to the media in the provinces.

I was also asked to deliver the opening message and I stressed the historic character of the event and its importance for the life of our people. Since we are living in a highly divided society it is important that we in the media must unite Together as One in order to be a living sign of unity for others. We have to imiatate the heroic deeds of Ninoy and Cory Aquino who both dedicated their lives for the sake of Freedom, Justice and Peace in the country.
