People mag gives Charice's CD a 2.5-star rating

MANILA, Philippines - After reading a positive review given to Charice’s eponymous debut US album by a People mag music critic, I will promptly listen to the complimentary copy sent to me by Warner Music. The review, reprinted below in full, is accompanied by a ‘with-it’ photo of Charice’s (above):
If ever one note could make an album, then it may be the very last one Charice — the YouTube phenom who just made her fourth appearance on Oprah — hits on her self-titled debut. Her big moment comes on the Diane Warren ballad Note to God, which finds the 18-year-old Filipina reaching for heavens, backed by a gospel choir. A powerhouse performance, it’s the stuff of a young Celine, Whitney or Mariah. But Charice is torn between being a begowned diva and acting her age on songs like the Iyaz-assisted single Pyramid, which sounds more like something off a Jordin Sparks CD.
By the way, for the information of Funfare readers asking why Charice and her brother Carl are being baptized only now (on Saturday, May 22, at the Pasig Cathedral): The siblings were members of the Iglesia ni Kristo until their mom, Raquel, decided to be converted to Roman Catholicism. Thus, their baptism as Catholics.

I thought all along they were Catholic , because they were shown going to Quiapo Church before to pray for thanksgiving.

ReplyDeleteThey return to Catholic practices after leaving INC. Only later they realized that Charice and her brother are not yet Baptized in the Catholic Church. Better late than never.

ReplyDeleteHello Fr. Abe, I am an avid Charice fan here and i am familiar with a lot of the details of Charice's life and activities.
ReplyDeleteThey have been Catholics for a long time now. Charice's mom was originally a Catholic and became an INC member because her husband is one. But they separated early on due to domestic violence and the mom decided to revert to becoming a Catholic.
So indirectly, Charice and her brother have been living their life as Catholics until they realized the need to be baptized officially as Catholics.
I am posting a link here that pretty much explains the background of their religious affiliation. But do read Charice's story as it is very good read and it is an inspiring story as well for anyone!

ReplyDeleteHere's another video of Charice singing O Holy Night in a public Mass in a church somewhere in Tagaytay in Dec 2008(where she lives) during Communion.
Since Charice's fans span all nationalities and religious affiliations,they watch whatever vids she has on the net. So some are unfamiliar with the communion process during the Mass, that's why some commenters of the vid were saying how rude the people were for showing 'disrespect' to her singing by just walking in front of her and stuff.
Isnt charice nice? Singing an epic Christmas song out of the blue in a public Mass. Many of her international fans have said that Charice's version of O Holy Night is one of the best renditions ever, comparable to the versions sung by Celine Dion. Enjoy!

MANILA, Philippines—“Get some chocolates, now!” barked the priest’s assistant to an acolyte midway into the baptism and confirmation of Charice Pempengco and her brother Carl Saturday morning at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Pasig.
Moments later, the acolyte rushed back with a pack of Hershey’s Kisses, and the assistant gave some to the presiding clergyman, the Most Rev. Francisco San Diego, the bishop of the Diocese of Pasig.
With a smile, Bishop San Diego apologized: “I’m sorry for the delay. I was having hypoglycemia [low blood sugar attack].
The incident hardly caused a stir, as the sweltering heat in the baptismal font area of the church drove people to fan themselves briskly, while some tried shutting their eyes intermittently to avoid distraction.
In the middle of the room sat the Pempengco siblings— Charice looking solemn in a formal white dress, and Carl sporting a more casual attire in similar color.
Surrounding them were a power cast of more than 20 pairs of godparents led by a contingent from ABS-CBN: network president Charo Santos; producer Laurenti Dyogi; “The Buzz” hosts Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino; segment host and radio personality Jobert Sucaldito; “TV Patrol” news anchors Karen Davila and Julius Babao; and Star Records boss Annabelle Regalado-Borja.
US entertainment mogul Oprah Winfrey and Canadian record producer David Foster, two principal sponsors who played a major role in Charice’s ascent to international stardom, couldn’t make the flight to attend the ceremony.
Instead Winfrey sent her own TV crew to document the proceedings.

ReplyDeleteBehind the Pempengcos sat their mother, Raquel, who spoke to the Inquirer and explained why she’s having her children baptized in Catholic rites only now.
Raquel Relucio said she, too, was a baptized Catholic but converted to the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) when she married Ricky Pempengco, who was a member of INC.
The children were baptized in INC when they were born.
For two years Mrs. Pempengco said she regularly attended INC worship services, until marital discord forced her to leave the house with her kids.
When she moved to another address, she failed to submit the transfer records required by the INC, which resulted in her name being declared “missing from the list.”
That was 15 years ago. “Matagal na akong tiwalag sa INC (I have long been separated from INC),” she said.
Charice was only 3 when her mother struggled to fend for themselves. “At the time I really wanted her and Carl to be baptized again as Catholics,” Mrs. Pempengco pointed out. “But I thought it was not possible if we were not a complete family and money was scarce.”
It was only recently, she added, when she tried asking Bishop San Diego about baptizing her children and the latter agreed to administer the sacrament at the Pasig Cathedral.
Charice is fond of the church because she once played an angel during Easter vigil rites there, said Mrs. Pempengco.
After the baptism and confirmation ceremony, Charice proceeded to the church quadrangle where hundreds of children sang in loud voices, “Happy birthday to you!”
The international pop star, who turned 18 recently, decided to forego a lavish reception and instead brought food to the children, residents of 10 barangays around the parish, who were also under the care of the church’s soup kitchen program.
The celebrated singer, whose self-titled US debut CD is currently at No. 8 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart in its first week of release, happily sang an a cappella version of her hit single, “Pyramid.”
When the kids screamed for more, she obliged with “We Are the World.”
As she looked around her, she was reminded of her own childhood years.
In one corner stood 12-year-old Ma. Hadassa Macaranas of Barangay San Nicolas, visibly awed by the performance. “Charice is a good singer,” she said. “I want to be like her.”

as for the INC, blind obedience will do more bad than good. a family-run religion is a business in disguise. that's the reality of it.

3. Maraming nga sigurong good citizen members ang RC pero in terms of percentage of RC membership, ilan kaya? Baka wala pang 1percent.
4.Mas mabaho at nilulumot ang mga churches ng RC. Ang toilet ng INC churches pwede mo ng bedroom Fr. Abe- ang linis.
5. Yung mga RC churches sa Europe, walang tao-pang tourist attraction lang. Mas madami pa nagsisimba sa Quiapo.
6. Mahihirap lang mga INC (sa tingin nyo) pero ang mga Church nila hindi galing sa PCSO, hweteng lord, PAGCOR, at politiko. Hindi rin sa alkansyang santo na iginagala kahit sa mga Mall. Puro sariling sikap to. Taos pusong abuloy-walang pilitan at batay sa aral ng bibliya.
7. Sa RC me bayad ang kasal, binyag, kumpil, basbas sa patay at mga ipinagbibiling relikya na pinagkakakitaan. Sa Iglesia wala mga yan.Puro abuloy lang tuwing pagsamba. Kaya nyo ba yun? Pag me na abuloy na mayaman sa RC pinanapa diario pa. Nkakahiya sa Dios.

Fr. Abe, I didn't know Charice was an INC member. I'm glad though that she has converted to the Roman Catholic Church. Now she can sing with a clear conscience Ave Maria, Panis Angelicus, even Silent Night and Holy Night, and all the songs and hymns of the one true church. Hindi naman pwede kakanta kanta sya ng ganyan, e Iglesia ni Manalo naman pala sya. Wala naman syang mapipiga sa kultong ito. The INC is a sterile medium where no great music or art can flourish. No great philosophy, literature, theology, scientific knowledge or, come to think about it, architecture either. Ipinagmamalaki ng INC members ang mga kapilya nila, pero kahit yan e kopya lang sa RCC. Kung di mga bugok ang mga INC members they should realize that these so-called chapels are French Gothic, a Catholic Church architectural style popular in Europe.

Maybe their natural holiness prevent them from giving measure for measure, and so Felix Manalo and his followers have the field to themselves.
ReplyDeleteHere's how they do it. They will tell a prospective member that Felix Manolo is the angel rising in the far east, as foretold in bible. The Philippines, they will say, is in the Far East. They will quote Admiral George Dewey, who supposedly says America needs an outpost in the Far East, and the Philippines is ideal for that purpose. Actually, the bible says east, not far east. But even if it does say far east, the term refers to a point in the compass, not to a geographic location. Again, even if it refers to a particular region in the map, the Philippines falls outside that region. The Philippines is in the Southeast, not in the Far East, never mind that Protestant Dewey. The countries that make up the Far East are Japan and Korea and, I think, part of Russia.
The Manolistas claim INC is the church established by Christ. They will quote the passage, "At sa ibabaw ng batong ito itatayo ko ang aking Iglesia." Then they will say, with a straight face. "Sino ang nagsasalita? Si Cristo. Ano daw ang itatayo? Iglesia. Samakatuwid Iglesia ni Cristo."
This is hilarious, but the tindera sa palengke, the construction worker, the tricycle driver, and the magtataho lap it all up.
But the poor and uneducated also deserve the saving protection of the Catholic Church. And if you, Fr. Abe, can unmask these false prophets by resorting to sarcasm, biting humor, and outright insult, you'll bring our lost brethren home or, most important of all, prevent them from being led astray in the first place.
As regards Charice. I'm glad she found her way back. Now she can, in good conscience, sing the Ave Maria, Silent Night, and other Catholic songs.
The INC and, for that matter, the other heretical sects formed by Eli Soriano, Eddie Villanueva, and Apollo Quiboloy can never boast of any meaningful songs and hymns. Or of literature. Or of scientific knowledge. All advances in science and technology, arts and culture, social sciences, government and the law have been made by Catholic priests and laymen.
If Catholicism is not the one true religion, then Christianity is a cruel joke foisted on mankind.
