fr. i have a question .. IF Jesus wanted us to do the sign of the cross, he would have taught us so.
But guess what, I'm sure he was aware that it was a "symbol", an "image" of something. And after all, it was "man" that decided to do that. Not "him". Not "him", and again not "him".
The truth, when in the hands of the wrong people, will and always will mislead people. fr. sagutin nio nman po yan .. .

Dear Mark Jay,
JESUS TAUGHT US THE SIGN OF THE CROSS BECAUSE HE SAVED US BY HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS. THIS IS CLEARLY EXPRESSED BY ST. PAUL: Ephesians 2:16 ‘And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by THE CROSS…’
THAT IS THE REASON WHY THE EARLY CHRISTIANS ARE PROCLAIMING THE CROSS OF JESUS: Galatians 6:12-16 ‘But God forbid that I should glory, save in THE CROSS of the Lord Jesus Christ…’
THE CATHOLICS ARE GLORYING IN THE CROSS OF JESUS BUT THE BORN AGAIN, THE INC AND THE ADD ARE LIKE SATAN - ANTI CROSS OF JESUS.

I kind of wonder if you have ever thought of it that the Passover may have formed the shape of the cross when it was marked on the door.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, your title has wrong grammar. Maybe you were typing in a hurry.
Sign of the cross as a subject and as an act are two different things. Your response is more on the subject. To clarify, when the act of signing of the cross started and who started or founded it?
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for calling my attention to the wrong grammar. Indeed I typed it hastily. Actually it was posted very late that night.
Your sharing about the Marks on the Door during the Passover is a typology of the Sign of the Cross. Thanks for sharing it.
Dear Eon Aitia,
ReplyDeleteThe subject and the action go hand and hand. They are connected with each other. If the subject is Biblical then the actions supporting or manifesting the subjects are not contrary to the Bible rather supported by it. Unless you can show the contrary from the Bible.
Our enemies are making evil out of the sign of the Cross. Where is that in the Bible? Nothing. Instead, the Bible speaks favorably of the Cross and therefore our actions are showing our love and affection for the Cross. Like Paul we glory in the Cross of Jesus.

ReplyDeleteHello.
ReplyDeleteKababasa ko lang po nitong blog niyo. It was a wonder to have this site! I was looking for something to spend my idle time with (which, as we all know, makes way for temptation to rule), and I came into this. I believe God is tapping my passion to use it in my idle time. :)
Eon Aitia, maybe before we look into the traditions, we should ask ourselves why the traditions are being done.
With due respect, the Wikipedia article, though not a fully-reliable source, writes a better account than what I could present:
"The Christian sign of the cross was originally made with the right-hand thumb across the forehead only.[6] Around the year 200 in Carthage (modern Tunisia, Africa), Tertullian says: "We Christians wear out our foreheads with the sign of the cross".[7] Vestiges of this practice remain: some Christians sign a cross on their forehead before hearing the Gospels during Mass; foreheads are marked with an ash cross on Ash Wednesday; holy oil (called chrism) is applied on the forehead for the sacrament of Confirmation. By the fourth century, the sign of the cross involved other parts of the body beyond the forehead."
Which tells that the act itself is inclined in the tradition of the church. It is rooted not as a law, but a manifestation of the belief that the Church has.
The sign of the cross, personally, is a reminder of the "Good News" of the Cross: of poverty, of sacrifice that is held by Catholics. Quoting Rizal, he recommended the Catholic faith (despite his questions) and upheld its "Gospel" of poverty: one that is focused on sacrifice as the only language of love.
We venerate the cross not only because it symbolizes "Christ's death and defeat, but victory and life". It is a unique victory that only that sacrificial love can make.
"Did Jesus teach us the sign of the Cross?" Tama po ang grammar at syntax diyan Father. Ano kaya ang ibig sabihin nung isang Anonymous?
ReplyDeleteEzekiel 9:4
ReplyDeleteAnd the Lord said to him: Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem: and mark Thau upon the foreheads of the men that sigh, and mourn for all the abominations that are committed in the midst thereof.
"Thau" in Hebrew is a cross sign thus prefigures the sign of the cross.
Nowhere in the Bible prohibits making the sign of the cross. Prohibition of making the sign of the cross is only an invention of the enemies of the cross of Christ for they are "allergic" of the cross because it reminds them of their defeat. The enemies of Christ also do not have crucifix in their Churches.
Hope our readers can help us find it.
Dear Bro. Avelino,
ReplyDeleteThank you for that valuable sharing. I just want to remind our readers that the practice of the Sign of the Cross didn't start with Tertulian in 200AD. The guy simply explained and defended the already on-going practice of the Church during his time which was much older.
The Sign of the Cross is Christological and Apostolic in origin.

FR. ABE:
IT MEANS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR US TO BE ANGRY WITHOUT COMMITTING SIN AS JESUS GOT ANGRY YET HE REMAINED SINLESS.
WE MUST NOT ALLOW OUR ANGER TO TURN INTO HATRED. WE MUST FIND EVIL REPULSIVE AND THEREFORE WE ARE ANGRY AT IT BUT WE MUST NOT GO BEYOND IT TO THE POINT THAT WE DESIGN EVIL SCHEMES AGAINST OTHERS OR WE WISH HARM ON THEM.
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteYes, I am aware of that NASA project of finding life in the outer space.
Is there any contradiction with the teachings of the Church? NO. Actually the Catholic Church is one of the oldest institution that established science centers including high towers to study the planets and outer space. Just think of the Tower of Pisa used by Galileo. It is the tower of the Church of Pisa. The Catholic Church is one of the pioneers in scientific research.
Is it possible that the Bible or Religion loose their authenticity? NO again. Because the Bible and the Christian Faith didn't loose their authenticity when the scientists discovered the Bacterias, Viruses, etc. And they didn't loose authenticity when planets, stars, galaxies, etc. where discovered.
If life will be found in the outer space it will only declare all the more the greatness of our God.
