To anonymous,
ReplyDeleteIt is not intrinsically opposed to divine will for God to communicate His graces through material objects because this is an effect of Christ's Incarnation. Christ redeemed us by utilizing a material object and that is the human body, and through the human nature that he assumed He sacrificed it in order for us to be redeemed. When Christ was hanging on the cross He communicated the graces He obtained by His death through a material object and that is the blood and water that gush forth from His side. By Christ Incarnation matter or material objects has become Holy objects or in our Catholic faith Sacramentals because through this Holy objects (scapulars, Rosaries, Statues, candles etc.) God communicates His grace. In the Bible it is clearly stated in the Book of Acts on how God communicates His grace through material objects.
Acts 19:11-12
And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul. So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
In this passage it is clear the "handkerchiefs and aprons" where used to heal people who are sick. The practice of Catholics of wiping handkerchiefs in statues of saints and wipe it to themselves is not a superstitious belief rather it is in conformity with Scripture.
In Acts 5:15
Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
Aside from handkerchiefs and aprons even the shadow of Peter was used to communicate God's grace in order to heal sick people.
In Matthew 9:20-22
And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
In this passage the woman was healed from her disease by simply touching the garment of Jesus. This clearly proves that God uses material things to confer grace.
Even if Born Again believes in Trinity yet their teachings should not be embrace. They only had the doctrine of the Trinity because the Catholic Church has already defined this Dogma and defended it even before a single protestant Church was established.
Gal.1:8
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
St. Paul clearly warned us that even if an angel is going to preach a gospel that did not originate from the Apostles, one should reject it. The teachings of Born Again did not originate from the Apostles. Their doctrines are based on the book entitled "Fundamentals" a collaborative work of various Protestant theologians in reaction to "Liberalism". Hence the Belief of Born Again is strictly not apostolic.
God may convey His graces through matter.

Hello Father I Have a Question:
ReplyDeleteA Protestant(born and raised a former catholic)posted on rationalhero.com(a nationalist-secularist website) his scriptural disagreement with the church on contraception, and I quote:
"There is no Biblical precept that supports their stand on contraception. The oft quoted story of Onan is presented in the wrong context. His punishment was not due to the withdrawal of his semen, but due to his selfishness not to fulfill his brotherly duty of continuing his brother’s family".
Is He Right Father?
Thanks
Josemaria
Dear Josemaria,
ReplyDeleteThe Story of Onan must be taken in its totality and must not be compartmentalized. Evil act has an intention and practical execution. Selfishness is rooted in the Intention of Onan. But his Evil Act is founded on the fact that he committed withdrawal of his semen. These two comprises a single Immoral Activity of Onan.
Your Protestant friend is downplaying the act itself which is pathetic. For instance, if a person desires to commit rape but he didn't execute it then he is guilty of impurities in thoughts but cannot be held liable for the act of rape. So, if we will only look at the selfishness of Onan without relating it to his actual 'Act of Withdrawal' we are whitewashing the Sin of Onan.
The Catholic Church condemns the selfishness of Onan as well as his Act of Withdrawal.
As you can see, the Moral Standard of your Protestant friend is very shallow. That is why Abortion is legal in Protestant world. It is from them that Abortions and Contraceptions started. Because for them Good Intention is enough to excuse someone from committing evil or immoral actions.
Thank You Father and God for your answer!!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, please check out link I gave you to validate his existence(the protestant guy, specifically born-again christian) and May God Bless Us All!!!
All for Peter,with Jesus.Trough Mary!!!

ReplyDeleteANG ISANG CATOLICO AY MAAARING MAGDASAL KAHIT WALANG REBULTO.
BAKIT? DELIKADO BAKA KA SA PAGPUPUNAS MO LALU NA SA BANDANG BALIKAT AY MADULAS KA AT MAHULOG KA SA BANGIN NA PAGLALIMLALIM.
ReplyDeleteKUNG AKO IKAW MAGPUNAS MUNALANG ANG MGA MALIIT NA SANTO SA IYONG ALTAR SA BAHAY BAKA PUNU NA NG ALIKABOK.
Father Abe
ReplyDeleteI have a question regarding in his question. I have notice that most of our fellw catholics wipe the statue with their handkerchief/towel not because it is dusty (in fact malinis naman at walang alikabok) but because they believe that it will become "miraculous" and grant the favors they ask. Is this still inline with the catholic faith dear father?
Kim
Dear Kim,
ReplyDeleteThe CAtholics are wiping the Sacred Images and other Sacred Things in the Temple not only for hope of miracle from God through the sacred object but also as an expression of love and affection... It is an act of 'Giving Honor' to what they represent. For instance, the Ark of the Covenant, the Sacred Vessels in the Temple, the Sanctuaries, etc. are considered dear to the People of Israel because they represent the Glory and Honor of God. While the Sacred Images represents the Angels and the Saints or the Lord Jesus.
It is a very good human expressions in all culture and in all times that images of our loved ones are being kissed, they are posted on the primary halls of the house and they are frequently touched. The paintings and sculptures of the Heroes of the Nation are given prominence in the public halls, schools and public plazas. And people are gathering in front of them daily for flag ceremonies, holiday celebrates with floral offerings, band music and confettis. People are usually having their picture-taking near and around the images of the beloved heroes or directly touching them.
These are common human expressions. Are they evil? OF COURSE NOT UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE OTHERWISE. It is not evil to touch sacred images as an expression of honor given to the National Heroes, Heroes of the Faith and to images of Beloved: Parents, Girlfriend or Boyfriend, Husband or Wife, Children, etc.
In addition, it is not a tenet of our Catholic Faith, Kim. We Catholics can do it or not do it. We are not oblige to do it and we are not prohibited to do it. IT IS NOT A CATHOLIC DOCTRINE BUT SIMPLY A PIOUS ACT OF HONORING THE SACRED.
