KATANUNGAN TUNGKOL SA MAINGAY NA PAGSAMBA AT SA 'SPEAKING IN TONGUES'

Anonymous said...

Fr, may kakilala po akong friend na inaya po ako dati sa kanilang religous catholic org at naencounter ko kung paano sila magworship. They are just like protestant raising their hands, playing loud and solemn musics to praise god and i heard them speaking words that goes like "we praise you lord god, we glorify your name, we worship YOU ...SHILALA....!!" (basta po fr, di ko maintindihan!) then i asked them why are they speaking in that manner, they answered me that it is part of their worship which is called "praying in tongues". They said that by praying in tongues, satan did not know what they are saying and only god can interpret that. And if I'm not mistaken, his org is YFC, one of the family ministry of CFC.

Why are they worshiping like protestants (with loud musics, guitars, bands and the likes). Does their practice of worshiping does not violate or contradict to the catholic teachings? Anu po ba ang turo ng church about the "praying in tongues" or is it really a catholic teaching? If not, why these people are still practicing this thing? Tnx po fr, Godbless :)!!!

Dear Anonymous,

Your concern is also my concern.

I also notice that some Catholic organizations are imitating the manner of worships of Protestants by using loud music, singing and dancing as if that is the Biblical manner of worship. Instead, what the Lord Jesus had handed to us and what the Apostles did was the Solemn celebration of the Eucharist.

Concerning the speaking in Tongues. Their reasoning is very illogical. They want to use God as an excuse for not understanding the message. On the contrary God prefers a clear and undestandable message... one that is reasonable, logical and unambiguous. It is Satan who prefers a message that nobody understands. So that the witches, the diviners, sorcerers and mediusm commonly employ gibberish sounds which no one understands.

The Gospel Message is a Kerygma it is a Proclamation with a goal for it to be known, to be understood and to be accepted by the people. The Message of God is very rich and sometimes requires reflections to understand like the Parables but they are never gibberish and nonsense sounds. The Parables and Sayings of Jesus sometimes are difficult to understand because they are rich in meaning but each story or line is simple: about a sower, about the shepherd and the flock, about the flowers of the field, etc.

That is why that so-called Speaking in Tongue is dangerous. It can be a venue for evil spirits to enter into the mind of the one doing it. Actually I have heard reports of such incidents.

THE BEST PRAYER IS OUR FATHER, PERSONALLY TAUGHT BY JESUS AND THE ANGELIC SALUTATION, HAIL MARY, WHICH SUMMARIZES THE HISTORY OF SALVATION. A MILLION SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS GARBAGE INCOMPARISON WITH ONE OUR FATHER. BECAUSE ITIS THE WORD OF GOD... WHILE THOSE SOUNDS FROM SPEAKING IN TONGUES BELONGS TO THE ANIMALS.

The real speaking in tongues was not like that. It was a proclamation of the Gospel understood by all the listeners.

Why is it that St. Paul speaks of one interpreting the tongues?

1 Cor 12:6 And there are diversities of workings, but the same God, who worketh all things in all.

MARAMI GAWAIN SA SUBALIT GALING SA IISANG DIOS.

1 Cor 12:7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit withal.

BAWAT ISA AY PINAGKALOOBAN NG HANDOG NA GALING SA IISANG ESPIRITU.

1 Cor 12:8 For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit:

MERONG PINAGKALOOBAN NG KARUNUNGAN. KAYA MERON TAYONG MGA GENIUS AT MGA SCHOLARS. MERON DIN NAMANG MAGALING MAGPALIWANAG.

1 Cor 12:9 to another faith, in the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, in the one Spirit;

MERONG NAGTATAGLAY NG MAS MALAKAS O MATIBAY NA PANANAMPALATAYA AT MERONG NAGPAPAGALING NG MGA MAYSAKIT.

1 Cor 12:10 and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits: to another divers kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues:

MERONG MGA MIRACLE WORKERS KAGAYA NG ATING MGA SAINTS AT MAYROONG NAKAPAG PROPESIYA, AT MERONG MAY ABILITY TO DISCERN THE SPIRITS... ITO ANG ATING GMA SPIRITUAL MASTERS.

ANO YANG DIVERSE TONGUES? IBIG SABIHIN MAY ABILIDAD MAGSALITA SA IBAT IBANG WIKA. TULAD NI POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREAT AT POPE BENEDICT XVI. THEY CAN SPEAK GERMAN, FRENCH, ENGLISH, SPANISH, LATIN, GREEK, HEBREW FLUENTLY.

ANO NAMAN ANG INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES? YUNG SALITA NG DIOS AY PINAPALIWANAG NG MABUTI SA MGA TAO. ITO ANG GAWAIN NG DIACONO, PARI AT OBISPO SA MISA. KAPAG MERONG HINDI MAINTINDIHAN ANG MGA TAO SA BIBLIA ANG MGA GURO NG PANANAMPALATAYA ANG NAGPAPALIWANAG. SUBALIT WALANG SINASABI DYAN NA DAPAT YUNG SPEAKING IN TONGUES AY HINDI NAIINTINDIHAN.

1 Cor 12:11 but all these worketh the one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one severally even as he will.

SUBALIT ANG LAHAT NG ATING BIYAYA AY DAPAT GALING SA HOLY SPIRIT. YANG SPEAKING IN TONGUES NA GINAGAYA NILA GALING SA MGA PROTESTANTENG MGA HERETICO.

1 Cor 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

DAPAT TAYONG LAHAT AY UNITED INTO ONE BODY WITH CHRIST. ANO YAN? ANG CHURCH. ANG CHURCH ANG BODY NI CHRIST. ANG MGA PROTESTANTE AY HINDI MEMBERS OF THE BODY OF CHRIST. THEY ARE HERETICS AND ENEMIES OF THE TRUE FAITH. KAYA HINDI NATIN DAPAT GAYAHIN ANG KANILANG MANNERS OF WORSHIPS.

  4. Hi Fr. Abe,

Anonymous I have posted in my blog an article regarding "Speaking in Tongues. There you can find the heresies associated with the practice of praying in tongues, the condemnation of the Pope and a brief explanation of the passages in the Bible that they used to defend their practice. This is the link to my blog

  5. Mother Angelica of EWTN, in the book written by Raymond Arroyo is said to be practicing 'speaking in tongues'. Any comments?

  6. O YES. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT BLOG AND THAT PARTICULAR EXPLANATION OF BRO. ISAHEL ON SPEAKING IN TONGUES. HE EVEN QUOTED A PAPAL DOCUMENT ABOUT IT.

  7. [Mother Angelica of EWTN, in the book written by Raymond Arroyo is said to be practicing 'speaking in tongues'. Any comments?]

YES. BUT LATER SHE ABANDONED IT. AFTER REALIZING ITS SHALLOWNESS AND ITS DANGERS. I HAVE THE BOOK.

  8. Father,
I'm just curious. Can you cite that part of the book which says she abandoned it.

There's a part saying she 'pulled out of it' because 'people were taking the gifts not the Lord'. Is that what you are talking about?

By adopting this practice, are those Catholics are in heresy?

  9. Speaking in tongues should not be taken lightly. We open our soul to a spirit whom we don't know where it comes from.

  10. Now is already late at night here and I still have to find the book. If you will not give me the correct page it means I have to browse the entire book. He, he, he... Please have mercy on me. He, he, he...

Yea, I think that's it. She pulled out of it.

Heresy is being committed if one is obstinate in rejecting a doctrine of the Church or willfully believing the wrong understanding of the faith. But if one is faithful to the Church like Mother Angelica and she was simply doing it with sincerity of heart not knowing yet its full implications then she was not in heresy. However, just like Mother Angelica our Catholic faithful must attain a higher level of spirituality to the point that they will recognize the shallowness of this 'speaking in tongue' practice.

  11. [Speaking in tongues should not be taken lightly. We open our soul to a spirit whom we don't know where it comes from.]

    VERY TRUE, BRO. TITO.

JESUS IS PERFECTLY FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT YET HE NEVER SPOKE IN TONGUEs:

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed," [Luke 4:18]

SEE, THE EFFECTS OF THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN JESUS IS NOT SPEAKING IN TONGUES BUT RATHER INCREASED SENSE OF MISSION. THEN AFTER SAYING THAT JESUS PREACHED IN NORMAL LANGUAGE INSIDE THE SYNAGOGUE. NO GIBBERISH SOUNDS.

HAVEN'T WE NOTICE THAT MAMA MARY WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT... SHE WAS OVERSHADOWED BY THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT [cf. Luke 1:35]YET SHE DIDN'T SPEAK IN TONGUES RATHER SHE HELPED ELIZABETH [cf. Luke 1:39] AND SUNG THE MAGNIFICAT [cf. Luke 1:46ff.].

WHEN ST. ELIZABETH WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT SHE PRONOUNCED THE WORDS "BLESSED ARE YOU AMONG WOMEN AND BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR WOMB" [cf. Luke 1:41]. AGAIN, NOTHING GIBBERISH.

THE BIBLE IS CLEAR ON THE GIFTS OR FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Gal 5:23 meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

LOOK, NOT OF THEM IS SPEAKING IN TONGUES WITH A GIBBERISH SOUNDS.

Gal 5:24 And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof.

THE PRESENCE OF THE SPIRIT IS MANIFESTED IN THE FACT THAT OUR PASSIONS AND LUST HAVE BEEN CONTROLLED BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY CRUCIFIED IN THE FLESH.

Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk.

Gal 5:26 Let us not be vainglorious, provoking one another, envying one another.

THE PRESENCE OF THE SPIRIT IS MANIFESTED BY LIFE OF ACTIVE FAITH AND GENUINE FRATERNAL LOVE.

  12. Here are those parts I am taling about.

"'it was charismania at its height,' Moris said of CFMA [Catholic Family Missionary Alliance]. 'Mother began to realize that people were taking the gifts rather than the Lord...and so she gradually pulled out of it.'"

"But that would not occur until 1980. In the interim, she flew across the country, sounding the cal to holiness before charismatic groups and dispensing her free tapes and books to any and all takers"

    -page 135

"'Father Michael was very charismatic and he convinced Mother that we should have these weekly prayer services with the sister,' Father Joseph Wolfe recollected. 'WE could close the doors of the chapel and sing praise music. Some people would have a word of prophecy. Mother and the sisters prayed in tongues.'"

"Along with the prayer services, the communities shared meals in common and lots of laughs. 'People asked me if I entered a cloister, and I said it was a semicloister,; Sister Mary Agnes, who arrived in 1986, observed. 'We had no silence, no wall; we had a family spirit.'"

    p202

From 'Mother Angelica' by Raymond Arroyo.

That would have said that Mo. Angelica still practiced prayer in tongues after she 'gradually pulled out of it'.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dear Bro. Anonymous,

I think that is not the one I am referring. There is in the book a statement wherein Mother Angelica decided to abandon speaking in tongues in a more categorical way. Unfortunately, I cannot point it out because the Index does not have entry for Speaking in Tongues.

I just want to point out that earlier Mother started like a Charismatic nun but soon she grew into a more traditional understanding of the faith. She changed her habit into a more Roman one, then she preferred The Mass Ad Orientem [the Priest facing the Altar] rather than the newly invented practices of speaking in tongues, etc.

As her sanctity was growing her spirituality are also climbing heights by becoming more faithful to Catholic tradition rather than the newly invented practices from the Protestants.

Maitanong ko lang po. Against po ba kayo sa mga Catholic Charismatic groups? Kasi meron naman pong mga Pari at kahit Obispo ay Spiritual Director ng isang Catholic Charismatic group at member sila. 17. I already explained above that I AM NOT AGAINST THE CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT AND MUCH MORE SA CATHOLIC CHARISMATICS. No, no, no. I LOVE AND RESPECT THEM. I have mentioned that I recognize the holiness and great service to the Church of these movement and their members. THEY ARE DOING A LOT OF GOOD THINGS IN THE CHURCH.

I am simply explaining that there are some actions that they are doing that are IMITATED FROM THE PROTESTANTS. I am saying that we must not imitate the Protestants like in their disco type, rock and roll type worships and their gibberish speaking in tongues.

The real Speaking in Tongue is not gibberish. But singing hymns and beautiful songs to the Lord in meaningful words like the Psalms of David, the Magnificat of Mary, like the Songs of the Angels and Saints in Heaven recorded in Book of Revelation.

I have heard Catholic Charismatics doing it properly. They are singing: "ALLELUIA, PRAISE THE LORD....PURIHIN NATIN ANG PANGINOON. ALLELUIA...." Clear, understandable, joyful, Spirit-fill. HINDI YUNG PARANG NAGMUMUMOG NG MADUMING LAWAY SA UMAGA.

  18. Hi Father,

I just browsed this lang so forgive me for not reading it in detail.

Are you saying po ba dito that the Catholic Church as a whole does not encourage that kind of tongues? By definition po kasi, and I quote po doon sa napanood kong episode ng "Web of Faith" sa EWTN (which I forgot kung sinong pari yung nagsabi), Tongues is a language na you don't understand but it contains praise to God.

I just need your clarification on this.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Officially, speaking in a gibberisn manner is not the Teaching of the Catholic Church. That statement that Tongues is a language that contain praise is an opinion but not the official doctrine of the Church.

In AllExperts.com the same question was given to the Catholic expert and here is the answer:

    Catholics - Tongues
    Expert: Sal - 5/13/2005

    Question
What is the Church's position on speaking in tongues?

    Answer
    Dear: Johann:

The Catholic Church teaches that speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit. However, the popular notion of speaking in tongues promoted by Protestant Pentecostals is false. They speak nonsensical gibberish and call it speaking in tongues. This is not from God according to the Bible.

The Catholic Church understands speaking in tongues to mean speaking a human language previously unknown to the speaker. At the first Christian Pentecost this truth was clearly illustrated. “Tongues as of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them” (Acts 2:3-4). The Apostles spoke a language previously unknown to them “These heard the sound (of wind), and assembled in a large crowd. They were much confused because each one heard these men speaking his own language…'How is it that each of us hears them in his native tongue?'” (Acts 2:6, 8). This is clear biblical evidence that speaking in tongues is not Pentecostal gibberish.

Another example of true speaking in tongues occurred before St. Peter baptized in to the Church the first Gentiles. The Gentiles received the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues (Acts 10:44-46). Later, Peter explained to the complaining Jews why he baptized Gentiles. “If God was giving them the same gift he gave us when we first believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to interfere with him?” (Acts 11:17). What was the gift that the Apostles received when they first believed at Pentecost? They spoke foreign languages previously unknown to them.

St. Paul teaches at length about true speaking in tongues. He teaches that true speaking in tongues does not consist of uttering nonsensical gibberish. “Similarly, if you do not utter intelligible speech, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air” (I Corinthians 14:9). St. Paul also says that what one is saying must build up the Church which gibberish cannot do. “Since you have set your hearts on spiritual gifts, try to be rich in those that build up the Church. Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret” (I Corinthians 14:12-13). Further he points out that one's spiritual gift must be used to teach one's fellow Christians. “Thank God, I speak in tongues more than any of you, but in the church I would rather say five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue” (I Corinthians 14:18-19). Finally, St. Paul notes that speaking in tongues can help unbelievers to believe because it is a spectacular manifestation of the Spirit. “The gift of tongues is a sign, not for those who believe but for those who do not believe” (I Corinthians 14:22). Yet for the Protestant Pentecostal they speak their gibberish for the benefit of their fellow Pentecostals. Often many in their church are making unintelligible sounds all at once “as the Spirit moves them”. Such action is condemned by St. Paul. “If any are going to talk in tongues let it be at most two or three, each in turn, with another to interpret what they are saying. But if there is no one to interpret, there should be silence in the church, each one speaking only to himself and to God” (I Corinthians 14:27-28).

The Bible clearly supports the Catholic Church's position on speaking in tongues. Just as clearly the Protestant Pentecostal gibberish is condemned by the same Bible.

    God Bless You,
    Sal

THAT IS ALMOST THE SAME WITH MY PREVIOUS ANSWERS.

  20. Hi Father,

If this is the case, and me being a member of Singles for Christ, shouldn't the Church teach us the right way to utilize this gift along with our elders in the community? I wouldn't mind being taught the right way that I may be able to share this to others.

    ReplyDelete
  21. YES, BRO. THE CHURCH MUST REALLY TEACH HER MEMBERS HOW TO USE THIS GIFT PROPERLY. ACTUALLY, SINCE THE TIME OF ST. PAUL THAT IS ALREADY CLARIFIED.

READ 1 COR 14:1-5. ST. PAUL EXPLAINS THAT SPEAKING IN TONGUE IS IS A GIFT BUT HE ENDS IT BY SUGGESTING THAT PROPHESYING IS BETTER THAN SPEAKING IN TONGUES. THUS, WHEN WE ONLY UTTER WORDS WHICH NO ONE UNDERSTANDS IT ONLY EDIFIES THE SELF BUT NOT THE CHURCH. BUT WHEN WE ARE TEACHING, PREACHING THEN WE EDIFY THE CHURCH.

THAT IS WHY PEOPLE INVOLVED IN CHARISMATICS MUST FOCUS MORE ON THEIR LIFE-TESTIMONIES, LET THEM BE INSPIRED TO BE VOLUNTEER CATECHISTS OR LAY PREACHERS OF THE CHURCH. SO THAT THEY WILL BECOME FRUITFUL MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH.

THE BELIEF THAT IF ONE IS SPEAKING IN TONGUES THAT ONE HAS HIGHER SPIRITUALITY THAN OTHERS IS WRONG. THE CATECHISTS AND THE TEACHERS OF THE FAITH ARE HIGHER IN SPIRITUALITY THAN THEM.

  22. Father, I'm a Youth for Christ more of a product of it. But since I've known the true Tongues I never done those gibberish speaking again 2 or most 3 years ago. Although, I haven't left that community because I still believe that it is a Catholic Community, just needing a reformation.

I'm asking if you are in favor in me in saying that our modern form worships (loud musics) in YFC are great as long as we give the highest respect of worship in the Eucharistic Mass?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dear Disciple,

Good that you stop doing that gibberish manner of speaking in tongue.

Masses with loud music are valid Masses and they serve their own purpose for our faithful who prefers to worship God in that manner. However, the best Mass is the one officially given by the Church, that is the normal one wherein there is a balance between prayers, songs, silent adoration and worships.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm saying father that we have a what we call "worship" a gathering of YFC where we sing praises and worships to the Lord, normally having a 3 songs (2 fast song and 1 slow song) but some songs are from the Protestant Music like Hillsong. Although we have now our own Music Band who composes our original praise and worship songs but it's just lately. We also do this kind of worship before and after our activities.

Sadly some if not most, give now more importance to these kind of worship rather than our Eucharistic Mass.

Since I've been a member of 100% KP, its been my advocacy to let these members esp. leaders to know about more Catholicism. The sad part is that those leaders are rejecting me and telling me that those kind of information is not necessary in the community.

Still, I haven't stop doing what I believe to be a way of proclaiming to these YFCs what Catholicism is because I still believe we are a Catholic community.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Please continue inviting your friends to know more about the Catholic Faith. They should know more our Doctrines and Morals, not just feeling good with modern music.

That concept of worship which means singing songs used by the Protestant is a lower kind of worship. FOR US CATHOLICS WHEN WE SPEAK OF WORSHIP IS THE HOLY MASS AND IT IS ALSO THE HIGHEST FORM OF WORSHIP WHICH MAN COULD OFFER TO THE ALMIGHTY.
