[5. PASUGO, Aug. 2004. "Who is the True God according to 1 John 5:20?"]

OF COURSE THIS REFERS TO JESUS. THE MAIN TOPIC OF JOHN IS THE WORD...[cf. 1 John 1:1-4] IT IS JESUS HE WAS POINTING TO.

[: "The Greek of 5:20 has only "the true (one)" and reads literally:]

THE GREEK OF 5:20 HAS THE SON OF GOD, THE TRUE ONE, THE TRUE GOD, JESUS CHRIST AND ETERNAL LIFE.

In the first line, the Son of God gave us understanding... to know the TRUE ONE.

Then the second line states what is this knowledge that was given:

OUR LIVES ARE IN THE TRUE ONE... IN HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.

So, the True One is God the Father and also His Son Jesus Christ. Because as our lives are in God, it is also in Jesus. Both God and Jesus are TRUE ONE. God is the True One and Jesus is the Truth as well.

That is why the Final sentence "This is the True God..." here it declares the Divinity of Jesus that is equal with the Father... because THE TRUE GOD IS ALSO THE ETERNAL LIFE. It only re-affirmed what is stated in the Introduction of this Epistle that the Word is the LIFE [1 John 1:2 "WE SAW IT... THE ETERNAL LIFE which was with the Father and was made known to us."

THE ETERNAL LIFE IS JESUS! THE ETERNAL LIFE WAS WITH THE FATHER. THEN AT THE END, THE TRUE GOD IS ALSO THE ETERNAL LIFE.

["we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we know the true (one) and we are in the true (one), in his Son Jesus Christ. This (one) is the true God and eternal life.]

THE TRUE GOD IS REFERRED TO THE FATHER BUT NOT TO THE FATHER ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS ALSO REFERRED TO THE SON. THE TEXT AND THE ENTIRE EPISTLE SPEAKS OF BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON AS TRUE GOD. THEY ARE ONE TRUE GOD. THE TRUE GOD IS THE ETERNAL LIFE! AND THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS THE LOGOS.

[It is clear from this that the true (one) is God throughout.]

THE TRUE ONE IS ATTRIBUTED TO BOTH GOD AND HIS SON.

[Christ is his Son.]

THE SON, THE LOGOS IS THE ETERNAL LIFE. ONLY GOD IS THE ETERNAL LIFE. THAT IS WHY THE SON IS GOD.

[In the final sentence "this" (one) most natuarally refers still to God, not to Christ, as some have suggested."]

WRONG. THE TRUE GOD AND THE ETERNAL LIFE REFERS TO THE FATHER AND TO JESUS. THE POINT OF JOHN IS TO SHOW THAT JESUS IS EQUAL IN BEING AS WELL AS DIVINITY WITH THE FATHER. THE ETERNAL LIFE IS JESUS AND THE ETERNAL LIFE IS TRUE GOD WITH THE FATHER.

IF THE GIVEN UNDERSTANDING IS THAT GOD IS GOD THEN THERE IS NO NEED OF SPECIAL GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE. THE REASON WHY THE SON OF GOD GAVE US UNDERSTANDING IS IN ORDER FOR US TO REALIZE THAT THE SON IS GOD.

WRONG. THE TRUE GOD IS CHRIST BECAUSE THE TRUE GOD IS IDENTIFIED AS THE ETERNAL LIFE. THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS CHRIST WHO WAS WITH THE FATHER [1 Jn 1:2]. Thus, it leads to Catholic Teaching that the Father and the Son are One God.
