Dear Anonymous,
The simple answer to your question is given by the Catholic Encyclopedia:
"The Third and Fourth Books of Machabees
III Mach. is the story of a persecution of the Jews in Egypt under Ptolemy IV Philopator (222-205 B. C.), and therefore has no right to its title. Though the work contains much that is historical, the story is a fiction. IV Mach. is a Jewish-Stoic philosophical treatise on the supremacy of pious reason, that is religious principles, over the passions. The martyrdom of Eleazar and of the seven brothers (2 Maccabees 6:18-7) is introduced to illustrate the author's thesis. Neither book has any claim to canonicity, though the first for a while received favourable consideration in some Churches."
As you can see from the explanation there are major points that stand out for us why it was rejected as Canonical:
1. It is a work of fiction. The story is not about the Maccabees or the Maccabean Revolt but about later persecution of the Jews. If the title itself and its content is deceptive and fictional then it is not worthy to be part of the Word of God. It would make God a participant in the lies of others.
Thus, it is similar to the so-called Gospel of Peter, Gospel of Thomas, etc. They are fakes.
2. The 3rd and 4th Maccabees were only appendix to the Greek Bible and not really part of its canon.
3. The Philosophy they contain is not Judeao-Christian but Stoic and Hellenistic thoughts. Thus, it is tainted.

ReplyDeletein relation lang po sa tanong na eto, pasensya na po kung matagal na etong comment ko sa post na eto,
Paano ko po i justify that the SEPTUAGINT version was the indeed the bible used by the apostles in the new testament? and not he HEBREW bible? any reference po Fr.?
Help lang po
Thanks in advance.
Roderick
DEAR RODERICK,
ReplyDeleteMADAMI, KASI ANG NEW TESTAMENT IS WRITTEN IN GREEK KAYA ANG LAHAT NG QUOTATIONS USED BY THE APOSTLES AND EVANGELISTS ARE FROM SEPTUAGINT.
I WILL ONLY CITE ONE EXAMPLE:
ISAIAH 7:14 "Behold, a virgin shall bear with child"
SA MASORETIC HEBREW ANG WORD AY 'alma' which means 'dalaga' or unmarried woman. IN SEPTUAGINT THE WORD USED IS 'parthenos" = VIRGIN. ST. MATTHEW CHOSE THE WORD 'VIRGIN' WHEN HE QUOTED ISAIAH 7:14 IN MATTHEW 1:23 WHICH IS FROM GREEK OLD TESTAMENT [SEPTUAGINT] NOT THE HEBREW VERSION.
Fr. Abe, I am a struggling or a beginner in apologetics and I understand fully well how much the Church should. not only defend but take back the dignity that we lost on lies of other sects, expecially the Iglesia Ni Cristo who I think is a worrisome organization that is affecting the society and gevernemtn as well in our country. As we know, they are already all ove the world. I am sorry to say that I am currently debating the INC in their own turf. I thought that it is also a good idea to let the INC members know that we are there to spread the truth. Is it okay to seek advice from you? Can you tell me how possible to PM you? I am a Filipino residing in NY.
