Question on Membership in the Church

The Pope baptizes a prominent convert from Islam

Hello Father... I have a question po. In the Catechism it says there that all the baptized are in communion, although imperfectly, in the Catholic Church. Does it mean that they are also Catholics? Sino po ba talaga Father ang mga members of the Catholic Church? Father, the Church also teaches that outside the Church there is no salvation. But those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the truth have the "assurance" or possibility of salvation. How about those who attack the Church, her doctrines, etc.? Example po yung mga INC, ADD, Born-Again, Protestants and the likes.

[In the Catechism it says there that all the baptized are in communion, although imperfectly, in the Catholic Church.]

YES. BAPTISM IS THE FIRST CRITERION TO BE IN COMMUNION WITH THE CHURCH. IT IS CALLED IMPERFECT BECAUSE THE FULLNESS OF THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION SHALL BE COMPLETED WITH THE RECEPTION OF THE SACRAMENTS OF CONFIRMATION AND THE HOLY EUCHARIST.

BESIDES, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE VALIDLY BAPTIZED THAT BELONGS TO OTHER CHURCHES LIKE THOSE IN THE ORTHODOX OR IN SOME PROTESTANT CHURCHES WHO WERE VALIDLY BAPTIZED WITH WATER AND THE TRINITARIAN FORMULA WITH RIGHT INTENTION.

[Does it mean that they are also Catholics?]

THEY ARE CHRISTIANS BUT NOT CATHOLICS. IT MEANS THAT THEY ARE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST BUT NOT IN COMMUNION WITH THE ONE AND ONLY CHURCH.

[Sino po ba talaga Father ang mga members of the Catholic Church?]

YUNG BAPTIZED IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR THE BABIES. FOR THE GROWN UP THEY MUST UPHELD THE CATHOLIC FAITH AND IN COMMUNION WITH THE POPE AND THE BISHOPS.

[Father, the Church also teaches that outside the Church there is no salvation.]

YES. IT MEANS THAT THE CHURCH IS GOD'S MEANS OF SALVATION. BUT THE CHURCH NEVER TAUGHT THAT ONLY CATHOLICS SHALL BE SAVED.

[But those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the truth have the "assurance" or possibility of salvation.]

CORRECT.

[How about those who attack the Church, her doctrines, etc.? Example po yung mga INC, ADD, Born-Again, Protestants and the likes.]

THEY ARE THE HERETICS. THEY ARE ENEMIES OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH. THEY ARE NOT CATHOLICS AT ALL. BUT WE REFRAIN IN SAYING THAT THEY WILL GO TO HELL BECAUSE THE ULTIMATE JUDGE ON THIS MATTER IS JESUS THE SAVIOR ALONE. IT IS NOT OUR BUSINESS TO DETERMINE WHO IS SAVED OR NOT BE SAVED. OUR DUTY IS TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL TO EVERY ONE.

  2. Dear Janesa,

Well, according to basic rule your Brother is committing a sin for living with a woman who is not his wife according to the Sacrament of the Holy Matrimony. However, we have to look at the entire circumstances. Your brother wanted to be married in the Church but was unable to do so because the other party belongs to a different religion. Your brother did well in refusing to be married in the religion of the girl. It means he is steadfast in faith.

Taken the circumstances I think your brother can no longer be faulted for that because it is not him who is refusing to be wed in the Church but his wife who refused to obey the authority of her husband.

The situation of your brother is similar to the situation of St. Monica who is married to a pagan.
