ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting question, and it gives me occassion to reflect on some interesting theologicical issues. Let's see if I get this right.
We all know that at the final judgment, God will cast Satan and his angels, together with all the unsaved, poor souls "into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." (Matthew 25:41) But why did God send Satan and his angels to earth first instead of directly to hell? This is where it gets interesting. Theologians believe that Satan, full of pride, thought he could outsmart his creator. Satan knew that he would fall from grace by refusing to obey, but he calculated that God could not simply extinguish his existence because God's infinite justice would also compel Him to extinguish Adam and Eve after their fall. Satan also calculated that God could not banish him from heaven because God would also have to banish man from heaven for all eternity because he knew that there was nothing that man could ever do to regain the "right" to enter heaven once more. So, Satan thought he could say "non serviam" to God and still remain in heaven with all his rebellious angels. But God knew Satan's intentions from the very beginning. Satan did not and could not forsee God's secret plan to redeem mankind by sending his only-begotten son, the second person of the Holy Trinity, to this world to be borne of a woman. Satan could not accept that God, an infinitely more superior being, would deign to become incarnate in form that is much inferior to his dignity. His disbelief, borne out of his own pride, is evident throughout the new testament. Satan was unsure who Jesus was, even when Jesus said He was the son of man, or that He and the Father were one, Satan still could not figure it out, despite his intelligence. And this disbelief unwittingly led Satan to cooperate in the redemption of mandkind (whom he hated and refused to serve) when he instigated Judas and the perfidious Jews to crucify and kill Jesus. The question is, if Lucifer and his followers did not sin, how would God have tested Adam and Even in Paradise? Or would God still have created Adam and Even if Lucifer did not sin? Thelogoians believe, as do some saints who were graced with private revelations from heaven, that man was created to fill the void left by Satan and his angels in heaven, and that the world will end when the last man that God intends to save has been saved. What do you think Father?

THE TESTING OF OUR FIRST PARENT IS NOT DEPENDENT ON SATAN BUT ON THEIR FREE WILL AND THE WAY THEY USE IT AS REGARDS THE COMMANDMENT OF GOD. JUST LIKE LUCIFER DIDN'T NEED A PRIOR DEMON TO BECOME THE DEVIL THAT HE IS TODAY SO SATAN IS NOT A NECESSITY FOR ADAM AND EVE'S CAPACITY TO COMMIT SIN BECAUSE HAVING FREE WILL THEY ARE ALWAYS HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE THE LESSER THINGS OF THIS WORLD OVER AND ABOVE GOD THE SUPREME GOOD.
ANOTHER SOURCE OF MAN'S CAPABILITY TO SIN WITH OR WITHOUT SATAN IS MAN'S IMPERFECTION. THE FACT THAT HUMAN BEINGS ARE NOT PERFECT THEY ARE PRONE TO SIN, MISTAKES, ERRORS NO MATTER HOW LOFTY THE DIGNITY THEY POSSESSED BEFORE THE FALL.
[ Or would God still have created Adam and Even if Lucifer did not sin?]
OF COURSE GOD WOULD STILL CREATE ADAM AND EVE EVEN IF LUCIFER DIDN'T REBEL IN HEAVEN. WHY? BECAUSE THE EXISTENCE OF CREATED BEINGS IS AN ACT OF GOD'S LOVE AND NOT A MERE PUNITIVE ACT EXCLUSIVELY FOR SATAN.
BEING CREATOR IS ROOTED IN THE BEING OF GOD AND NOT ON THE REBELLION OF SATAN.
POPE PIUS X IN HIS CATECHISM AND OF COURSE ALL CATECHISM OF THE CHURCH BEFORE AND AFTER UNANIMOUSLY DECLARES:
"Q. Why did God create us?
A. God created us to KNOW Him, to LOVE Him, to SERVE Him and to BE with Him FOREVER."
SEE, SATAN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE REASONS FOR OUR EXISTENCE AND IN GOD'S ACT OF CREATING. EVEN IF SATAN DIDN'T REBEL GOD REALLY INTENDS TO GIVE US ETERNAL LIFE BECAUSE PROLONGING AND PRESERVING LIFE IS HAVING ITS SOURCE IN THE GOODNESS AND LOVE OF GOD AND NOT MERE CORRECTION TO THE FAILED LUCIFERIAN COUP DE ETAT.

SO THAT NOW WE ARE LOOKING AT THE QUESTIONS WITH WIDER PERSPECTIVE NOT JUST ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF SIN-JUSTICE-REDEMPTION.
THOSE SAINTS ARE CORRECT IN THEIR UNDERSTANDING. BUT THE CHURCH HAS STUDIED THE MATTER FURTHER WITH BETTER UNDERSTANDING MORE THAN THOSE WHO STUDIED IT 500 YEARS AGO EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE THE SAME FAITH. FOR INSTANCE, THE BISHOPS OF THE COUNCIL OF EPHESUS WERE ABLE TO FORMULATE AND COMPREHEND BETTER THE DOGMATIC FORMULA 'THEOTOKOS' BECAUSE OF THE 'CONSUBSTANTIAL' OF NICEA. NICEA OPENED FOR US A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN EVEN THOUGH THE FAITH OF OUR BISHOPS IN EPHESUS IS THE SAME AS THE FAITH OF THE PRE-EPHESIAN BISHOPS. I agree with you Father that God would have created man anyway even if Lucifer did not sin. But if Lucifer did not sin, there would have been no serpent to tempt Eve, and without any temptation, Eve would most likely not even have considered eating the forbidden fruit or talking to Adam about it. Their stay in paradise would have uneventful, and upon the conclusion of their "journey" in Eden they would have been received body and soul into heaven without passing through death. And if man did not fall, there would have been no incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity for the purpose of redemming mankind. I am reminded of St. Augustine's allusion to one unfortunate event, the Fall of Man and the loss of the Garden of Eden, which we sing during the Easter Vigil: "O felix culpa quae talem et tantum meruit habere redemptorem." St. Ambrose also said that Adam's sin brought more good to humanity than if he had stayed perfectly innocent. So while we agree that man's existence is not due to Satan's rebellion, it cannot be denied also that man did not benefit from Satan's rebellion.

ReplyDeleteWhen you find the time please enlighten me about Satan and Heaven. We studied in our CCD class that Satan rebelled against God in Heaven, but my dad told me that it is not possible for anyone or anything that is not perfect to enter heaven, since God is all perfect and all Holy, He cannot allow anything imperfect to enter heaven. And once in heaven we cannot sin anymore for the love of God will be too much for us to choose evil. Dad also told me that Satan did not see God face to face in heaven when he rebelled. If that is so, how did it happened that Satan, who according to the bible was IN heaven when he rebelled against God, was allowed to be in heaven in the first place? If everything in heaven is holy and perfect, how is it possible for Satan to rebel against God?

ReplyDeleteThe Catholic Church teaches that Satan and his legions of demons were formerly good angels. They were in heaven not because they were evil who were able to enter but because they were good angels.
Then, God gave the angels the free will to decide whether to remain faithful to him or not. Lucifer and the other angels refused to serve God and by that act of refusal and rebellion they were expulsed from heaven. The book of Revelation reported that one.
The Catholic Church also teaches that since angels are immaterial beings their trials is only once. Those who remained faithful will no longer become evil and those who have been condemned are doomed to eternal punishment already. So, the statement no evil can enter heaven is true for us today because no sinner can enter heaven and those who are in heaven are already enjoying beatific vision for ever.
THERE IS NO CONFLICT WITH THAT STATEMENT AND THE PRESENCE OF SATAN IN HEAVEN DURING THE TIME OF ANGELIC TRIALS.
I'm sorry for my posting a comment which doesn't have direct connection with this entry. But the smoke of Satan blew in the Catholic art too.

I THINK YOU HAVE FAILED TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN ART AND MODERN ART WHICH IS BASED ON EXTREMES EMOTIONS AND SURREALISM.
ReplyDeleteTHE CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN ART IS BASED ON REALISM SO THEY PRESENT HUMAN FACES AND EMOTIONS AS IF THEY ARE REAL. BUT THE MORDERN ART IS NOT THAT WAY. IT CONVEYS LESS COLORS AND MORE EMOTIONS.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THOSE WORKS OF ARTS WHAT IS WRONG IS THE INTENTIONS OF THOSE WHO TRIED TO MANIPULATE THOSE IMAGES TO DISTORT THINGS. FOR INSTANCE, THE STATUE OF PAUL VI CONVEYS THE POPE'S PAIN AND BURDEN AS THE LEADER OF THE CHURCH DURING THE TIME WHEN COMMUNISM WAS AT THE PEAK OF ITS POWER, THE SEXUAL REVOLUTIONS AND THE RISE OF DRUG ADDICTIONS AND NUMEROUS PERSECUTIONS OF THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD. I PERSONALLY DOES NOT LIKE MODERN ART AND I PERSONALLY DO NOT LIKE THAT RESURRECTION ART IN PAUL VI HALL. BUT TO INTERPRET IT DEMONICALLY IS UNCALLED FOR AND AN ACT OF INJUSTICE TO THE POPE WHO CHAMPIONED THE GOSPEL OF LIFE AMIDST STRONG OPPOSITION FROM ALL SIDE.
