These words are still true today specially these days when different sects claim that they are the true church.
Jesus founded one church and it exist in the Catholic Church. Just like what Tertullian said:

Question lang po Padre. When and what heretical movement first questioned the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ? Was it Docetism in the 1st century of Arianism in the 4th century?

ReplyDeleteThe First Heresy to deny categorically the Divinity of Jesus is EBIONISM founded by Ebion. This is a group of heretical Jews who taught that the Lord Jesus is fully human and not Divine. However,they failed to convince the believers. The one who truly propagated the denial of the Divinity of Jesus is Arius of Alexandria. He succeeded in converting many places to his heresies but St. Athanasius and the succeeding Fathers of the Church successfully defeated this group.
Docetism is a heresy that teaches Jesus is only God but not human.
Then, Apollinarianism teaches that Jesus is God but not fully human because it teaches that the spirit of Jesus is replaced by the Divine Spirit. Thus Jesus had a body and soul but no human spirit.

ReplyDeleteAnother one, and I hope that I am not taking too much of your time. So it's true then that St. John wrote his Gospel in response to the plea of Asia Minor Church to combat Ebionism, and that his disciples Sts.Ignatius and Polycarp continued combating this heretical group who denied the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ well up to mid 2nd century?

THAT IS WHY THE FATHERS OF THE CHURCH ARE SAYING THAT EVEN MOSES OR THE ANGELS ARE ENVIOUS OF US FOR THE BLESSINGS THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED IN CHRIST. WHEN YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT OR IN THE MASS, YOU ARE BETTER THAN ABRAHAM AND MOSES.

ReplyDeleteIf dying is proof of not being a Christian or not being right with God, what of Jesus? Ah, but you will say he rose from the dead. So in a figurative sense is Ebionism rising from the dead. Therefore you are defeated by your own criteria.
But secondly, the Ebionites did not "die out" -- they were slaughtered by the Catholics. Such good Christians the Catholics. Jesus died for God and they killed for him. Is it not the Ebionites then that resembled Jesus as your spiritual forebears slaughtered and crucified them? And did you not resemble the chief priests who cried for his blood and sneered at him as he suffered? The proof is in the pudding, and it proves the Ebionites to be more Christian than the murderous Catholics.
