International singing sensation Susan Boyle has revealed that she could have been aborted as a baby in her mother’s womb if her mum had followed doctors’ advice.
But to her mother, a devout Roman Catholic, an abortion was unthinkable and she went through with the pregnancy.
Miss Boyle said doctors had told Bridget Boyle, then a 45-year-old mother of eight, that having another baby could kill her.
Unthinkable
The singer, writing in her autobiography, said when she was born doctors commented she would “never be anything” and she has been “trying all my life to prove them wrong”.
The Scottish star, who shot to fame on ITV’s popular show Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, explores her life in her book entitled The Woman I Was Born To Be.
She explained the situation surrounding her birth: “The doctors considered the danger so severe they offered a termination but that would have been unthinkable for my mother, a devout Catholic”.
Serious
Miss Boyle continued: “During my birth in 1961 it was touch and go for her as well as me but, eventually, I was delivered by emergency caesarean section.
“When my mother came round from the anaesthetic, the doctor looked at her seriously.
“‘You have a girl,’ he told her. ‘She’s very small and she needs help with her respiration, so we have her in an incubator.’
“When my father Patrick appeared at my mother’s bedside, she knew something was wrong. ‘She was starved of oxygen for a wee while,’” he said.
Praise
The singer went on: “‘It’s probably best to accept Susan will never be anything,’ my parents were told. ‘Susan will never come to anything so don’t expect too much of her.’”
Miss Boyle wrote that the doctors shouldn’t have made those comments: “What they didn’t know was that I’m a fighter and I’ve been trying all my life to prove them wrong.”
In June opera singer Andrea Bocelli praised his mother for rejecting the advice of doctors to abort him on the grounds that he would be disabled.
Encourage
During a performance the blind Italian tenor paid tribute to his mother Edi for preserving his life.
Mr Bocelli, 51, said he hoped the story could encourage many mothers who may find themselves in difficult situations but want to save the life of their baby.
In February a pro-life advert was aired on US television to an audience of around 100 million viewers during the Super Bowl.
The advert featured Tim Tebow, a prominent figure in US college football, and his mother Pam, who tells the story of how she rejected the advice of doctors to abort her son.
Almost lost
Speaking about the pregnancy Mrs Tebow says: “He almost didn’t make it into this world” and adds: “I can remember so many times when I almost lost him.”
The advert then takes a more lighthearted turn as Pam Tebow is tackled by her 22-year-old quarterback son.

I myself am also against abortion, Fr. Abe, but for another personal reason:
ReplyDeleteI was born out of wedlock, the illegitimate son of one of Cebu City's current councilors. My mother's family decided that I go by my mother's maiden name, hence I was born as AJ Cabugsa Migriño. I became AJ Migriño Caseñas after my mom married my stepdad in 1995. Had my mother's family pretended that family pride was greater than faith, I would never have existed.
Dear Brother AJ,
ReplyDeleteGIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR GIVING YOU LIFE AND WE EXPRESS GRATITUDE TO YOUR MOTHER FOR ACCEPTING YOU INTO HER LIFE.
Please don't call yourself illigitimate son brod. I was told by my Moral Professor that there are no illigitimate child there is only an illigitimate parents. Well, sorry to your parents for that. I do not mean to insult or malign them. It is just unfortunate that the kids are the ones receiving much pain from the mistakes of some parents.
GOD IS GREAT BECAUSE OUT OF SINFULNESS OF PEOPLE HE BUILDS GRACE. AND SO THE CHURCH IS BLESSED BY A GOOD YOUNG MAN AND AN APOLOGIST IN YOU.
I will soon visit Cebu again. I hope to see you. Please send me your cp number. I will not post in public. So that we can communicate while I am there and we can meet. Just a sip of coffee while discussing apologetics together and build personal friendship.
God bless you.
wow. fr abe, i can relate in this issue. i was an unwanted child. my mother suffered from heart ailments (enlarging of the heart)during the pregnancy my parents are always in the philippine heart center because of her heart ailments. according to my parents it is not on their plan of having another baby coz they already have 6 children. when my mother conceived the doctor advised/suggested to use contraceptive pills for it will not continue. because otherwise my mom will die of giving birth and i my 6 sibling are still young that time. and so the doctor gave her pills for the first three months. and my mother religiously did what the doctor's advised. she even do household chores like nagbubunot ng sahig para malaglag po ako. but three months had passed still wala po nangyari. so my parents got scared kasi after three months the doctor is suggesting another medicine/drugs that have better effects and results. but at this time they refused/rejected because they believed it is God intervention na po kaya kahit anong gawin ni mama hindi daw po ako malaglag pati po yung doktor natakot na din po kasi po kahit anong gawin ayaw daw po ako malaglag ang lakas daw po ng kapit ko sa sinapupunan ng nanay ko.
ReplyDeleteand so my my mother was transferred to PGH for a better facilities and medication since Phil Heart Center is only for patients with heart ailments. during this time she religiously go to hospital for check-up, they continue to monitor my condition inside the womb because even the doctor doesn't know what will be effect of the pills used by my mother for 3 months, they are just hoping that everything will be ok, until the 8th month. because the doctor advised that my mother should give birth earlier otherwise it is more dangerous for her condition however the doctor gave my parents lesser chances of that i will live. and they let my parents signed a waiver that if situation is a matter of life-and-death they will save the life of my mother over me for the sake of my 6 siblings. during birth my mother suffered enclampsia (high blood pressure during birth). thank God she delivered me safely though she have to stay in the hospital more than me. i was put into the incubator for help. the doctors were amazed because i was responding fast and i need to stay in the incubator for only two weeks. during the infant checked-up until i was 1 year old, my parents also told me that doctors were really in awe coz when they try to test or check my intelligence for any deficiency due to those damn pills i was normal, and according to the doctors i am above average child without any side-effects from the damn pills.
i thanked God for giving me this opportunity to live in this world, to my parents who gave me the chance to see the beauty of God's creation. to my mother who even suffered so much for me, i know that she is now at peace in the hands of God. to my father for that unwavering faith. I bring back the glory to my wonderful Creator.
God bless fr abe.
