Pero may question po ako, Fr. Abe....
Bakit po hindi kinonsider ang GOMBURZA na mga martir ng Simbahan dahil pinapatay sila kahit wala naman silang kasalanan? Ang sabi ng prof namin sa Rizal Course, even the Archbishop of Manila at that time was condemning this execution.
- Dear Bro. Joseph Ian,
-
THE GOMBURZA WERE NOT DECLARED MARTYRS OF THE FAITH BECAUSE THEY DIED FOR POLITICAL REASONS NOT BECAUSE OF 'THE HATRED OF THE FAITH'. THEY DIDN'T DIE BECAUSE OF REFUSAL TO DENY JESUS CHRIST OR ANY OF THE MAJOR TENETS OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH.
THEY ARE POLITICAL MARTYRS AND HEROES BUT NOT SAINTS.
-
IF that is the case, then the probability of Melchora Aquino being made a saint is higher compared to these priests because she practiced charity towards the katipuneros. I think that would be good grounds for heroic values
-
Dear Anonymous,
Melchora Aquino or our dear TANDANG SORA can only be declared a saint of charity if it is proven that she did those works of charity because of her Catholic Faith. If it is not for faith then it is not Charity but mere social work. She was doing those things for political reasons as well.
Another point to consider is that we have to determine if she was really a Catholic. Because there is a possibility that she was a Mason or an Aglipayan. If she is any of these two then she didn't belong to the Catholic Church and will not be considered a heroine of faith.
It is not enough to practice good works to be saints. It is necessary that the motivation is truly the Catholic Faith and not exclusively the political or social factors.

Some additional considerations:
ReplyDelete1) The Gomburza were "canonized" by the Aglipayan schismatics c. 1902. It was, of course, a purely political act on the part of Aglipay and company, but it also "poisoned" for Catholics the very idea of proposing the Gomburza for sainthood, especially as the situation between the Aglipayans and Catholics was extremely tense until about the 1960's. Had the Catholic Church decided to even so much as open the cause of canonization of the Gomburza, that would have been trumpeted as a victory for the Aglipayans.
2) The Gomburza were, rightly or wrongly, being used as icons of Filipino nationalism, and proposing them for sainthood would have been extremely controversial and toxic in the days of American rule.
3) The Catholic hierarchy of the Philippines has never shown much interest in proposing Filipinos for canonization and beatification.
4) The Gomburza were known for their opposition to the friars. This opposition was strictly on canonical, theological, and proto-nationalistic grounds, and never exceeded the boundaries of Church doctrine. However, this opposition continued (and continues) to be a sore point of contention for the friars, whether the Spanish friars who remained influential in the Philippines until the 1960's, or the Filipino friars of today. I would say that to even propose the Gomburza for possible canonization today runs the risk of reopening old wounds and of causing needless debates within the Church.
5) The accounts of the execution of the Gomburza note that Fr. Zamora went insane shortly before the execution, while Fr. Burgos was emotional and had difficulty accepting his unjust fate (although the portrayal of Fr. Burgos as a coward in the movie "Rizal" was extremely libelous). Only the elderly Fr. Gomez was calm. The reactions of Fr. Zamora and Fr. Burgos -- who are, without question, heroes -- were understandable, but not saintly. Fr. Gomez may have been saintly (we aren't sure) but very few records of his life remain.
canonization o beatification bayon?
salamat po.
I fully agree. I just want to raise another point vis a vis the Aglipayans.
ReplyDeleteThe GOMBURZA exemplified the 3 main advocacies of the schismatic Iglesia Filipina Independiente (called by the late Bishop Jorge Barlin during those un-ecumenical times as 'iglesia cismatica y diabolica')namely, Nationalization of the clergy, secularization of the parishes and the the vernacularization of the Liturgy.
We all have these three things in the Church today (post Vatican II). Our clergy are mostly Filipinos now. The parishes are mostly diocesan or secular. We clebrate the Mass in the vernacular.
So, it seems that there is no longer any reason for the IFI to remain in their schism.
Why not return to the Catholic Church?
Our Church leaders should faciliate their return to the Church. The CBCP must take its cue from what is now happening in Anglican and Episcopalian churches.
MALALA NA ANG SIRA NG IYONG PAG-IISIP. HE, HE, HE... KUNG ANG CANONIZATION O BEATIFICATION AY NAKA-AYON SA PERA SANA NA DECLARE NANG SANTO SI BILL GATES.
ReplyDeleteI cannot really say what is the origin of her good deeds to the katipuneros, is it because of her faith or because of her nationalism. I have yet to find historical evidence on this matter, but undoubtedly according to wikipedia she practice her faith in terms of prayers and charitable works:
ReplyDelete"In her native country, Aquino operated a store, which became a refuge for the sick and wounded revolutionaries. She fed, gave medical attention to and encouraged the revolutionaries with motherly advice and prayers"

As of the Canonization or beatification process it would be misleading if we are paying for the beatification or Canonization process per se. What we are paying the service fee for the canon lawyers/postulators to support their personal needs as well as the researchers for collecting data about the candidate. I think also the people in the congregation for the causes of saints in the Vatican are paid by the Holy See as its employees.

BECAUSE, IN EUROPE AND IN SPAIN HE HOBNOBBED WITH MASONS AND ANTI-CATHOLIC GROUPS. BUT HE STILL ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN UNIVERSITIES FOUNDED UNDER THE INSPIRATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
ReplyDeletehow convenient for the Romish church to separate church from state on selected issues.
ReplyDeleteTHERE ARE ISSUES THAT THE CHURCH AND THE STATE ARE UNITED SUCH AS EDUCATION AND CHARITABLE WORKS. THERE ARE ALSO ISSUES THAT THEY ARE SEPARATED. IT IS A NECESSARY FOR THE STATE AND THE CHURCH TO COOPERATE WITH ONE ANOTHER.
