good afternoon father! i saw 1 video of an islam leader saying our bible is not true. he tells one of the reasons why: in the last part of the book written by Moses, it says, "...moses died..." the islam leader then said how can a man who died have written that he died? it should have been. if he was the writer of that book, the it should have been "... I died...." but then again how can he write if he's dead?. father, this is just one of his reasons. can you enlighten me please. thanks!

[good afternoon father!]
GOOD AFTERNOON TOO.
[i saw 1 video of an islam leader saying our bible is not true.]
THAT ISLAM LEADER DEFINITELY IS WRONG.
[he tells one of the reasons why: in the last part of the book written by Moses, it says, "...moses died..." the islam leader then said how can a man who died have written that he died?]
THAT IS HIS MISTAKE. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS NOT TEACHING THAT THE SO-CALLED BOOKS OF MOSES AS WE HAVE THEM NOW ARE WRITTEN BY MOSES VERBATIM. RATHER WE ARE TEACHING THAT THE TEACHINGS AND IDEAS WERE HANDED DOWN BY GOD THROUGH MOSES. THUS, IT CONTAINS VALUABLE INFORMATION THAT ONLY MOSES RECEIVED FROM GOD.
ON THE OTHER HAND, WE ARE ALSO RECOGNIZING THE FACT THAT THERE ARE HISTORICAL NARRATIVES CONTAINED IN THOSE BOOKS. THOSE PARTS MUST HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY HISTORIANS OF THE HEBREW PEOPLE OR PRIESTLY SCHOLARS IN THE TEMPLE LATER ON. THUS, THERE ARE PASSAGES THAT SIMPLY NARRATES WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO MOSES AS IF HE WAS A MERE SUBJECT OF THE NARRATIVE RATHER THAN THE ONE WRITING A PERSONAL TESTIMONY.
IT IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR US CATHOLICS. IN FACT, EVEN THE GOSPELS OF JESUS WERE NOT WRITTEN PERSONALLY BY JESUS. THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES WERE NOT ORIGINALLY WRITTEN BY THE ACTUAL TWELVE APOSTLES.
TO INSINUATE THAT A THING IS WRONG BECAUSE IT IS NOT WRITTEN BY THE PERSON CONCERNED IS ILLOGICAL. BECAUSE EVEN IN COURT TESTIMONIES OF OTHERS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED AND THERE IS SUCH A THING AS OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY. OTHERS COULD WRITE SOMETHING WHICH IS A VALID TESTIMONY ABOUT A PERSON EVEN IF THE ACTUAL PERSON WAS NOT THE AUTHOR ITSELF.
[it should have been. if he was the writer of that book, the it should have been "... I died...." but then again how can he write if he's dead?. father, this is just one of his reasons.]
THAT IS WHY THE CHURCH IS TEACHING US THAT IN INTERPRETING THE SACRED SCRIPTURES WE HAVE TO CONSIDER THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND THE NATURE OF THE DOCUMENTS. IN THE PENTATEUCH OR THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES THERE ARE PARTS PRESENTING THE ACTUAL WORDS OF MOSES AND THERE ARE PARTS THAT WERE WRITTEN BY LATER HISTORIANS OR SCHOLARS WHOSE WORKS HAD BEEN INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT.
THE ARGUMENT IS VALID ONLY IF WE ARE TEACHING THAT MOSES WROTE PERSONALLY THE ACTUAL BOOK. NO, WE ARE SAYING THAT THEY ARE COLLECTIONS OF THE FAITH TESTIMONIES OF MOSES AND THE HEBREW PEOPLE OF THAT TIME.
[can you enlighten me please. thanks!]
- HOPE THIS WILL HELP. GOD BLESS YOU!

But, it certainly lowers the authoritative value of the documents if it is admitted now that those words were not from Moses' pen but by some unknown and unaccountable writer.
ReplyDeleteO NO. IT DIDN'T. BECAUSE THE REVELATION OF GOD IS NOT PROMISED TO BE EXCLUSIVE OF MOSES BUT IT IS HANDED TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD. MUCH MORE THE DOCUMENTS IS MORE SIGNIFICANT AND IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT BEARS THE TESTIMONY OF MOSES, OF JOSHUA AND THE PROPHETS THAT FOLLOWED AFTER.
ReplyDeleteTHE REVELATION OF GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT WAS GIVEN TO ISRAEL AS A PEOPLE AND THE FULLNESS OF REVELATION IN THE NEW TESTAMENT WAS GIVEN TO THE CHURCH THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH.
WHAT IS WRONG IN ISLAMIC REASONING IS THAT THEY ARE LIMITING THE INSPIRATION OF GOD TO FEW PEOPLE.
If that is the argument of anonymous, then,Koran is not a reliable source of truth because it was written decades after the death of Mohammad. http://www.churchinhistory.org/pages/crusades/martin-bright.htm
ReplyDeleteFrom anonymous too
kaya ako gusto ko na talaga magconvert sa Catholik.
ReplyDeleteFather, this is somewhat out of topic but i just cant find any link that allows me to send messages to you.
ReplyDeleteI have a question with regards to the Philippine Independent Church. They hold processions so similar to that of ours. Do I commit a sin if ever I join in one?
THEN, CONVERT TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH NOW.
ReplyDeleteI ADVISE YOU TO REFRAIN JOINING THEIR PROCESSIONS BECAUSE BY DOING SO YOU ARE HELPING THEM CLAIM THAT THE AGLIPAYAN CHURCH AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ARE THE SAME.
ReplyDeleteWE ARE NOT THE SAME. THEY ARE HERETICAL AND SCHISMATICS. DON'T JOIN THAT GROUP.
jOSUF, PARA MADAGDAGAN ANG UNAWA MO SA KORAN

ReplyDeleteDito po ako ngayon sa Davao but still need to go back in Dammam, Al khobar, KSA. I'll have my vacation this summer 2011 though. I'm giving myself ample time to discern, especially in matters of faith(and it's a decision that involves my family, for they too will be converted if God wills it!). Discussing and listening to my officemates and friends of diff. religious belief (such as christians, my fellow muslims, shintoism?), reading religious articles, forum, blogs(like this), and i also surf in the net and watch television to listen to diff. religious beliefs. So far, catholiks is getting my attention especially i come across this site (though there are some christians that bears strange belief, i dont know, maybe i still need to study and observe more).
@Anonymous SAB
I'm a Filipino, educated moslem.
Anyway, have you been here in Saudi Arabia? Mahirap makapangasawa ng Arabian woman no? ang laki kasi ng dowry! not unlike sa catholik, an ordinary filipino can marry italian or israelite woman provided that they both love each other.
By the way, thanks for the site that you refer, but for the moment, dito muna ako magbabasa sa blog ni fr.Abe.
Dear Bro. Yusuf,
ReplyDeleteWe will accompany you in our prayers. God bless you always.
Dear brothers, what you are doing is what Pope Benedict XVI means about faith and reason.
