Msgr. Pedro Quitorio before Catholic Bloggers present during the Meeting
Last June 6, 2011 the CBCP called for a special gathering of Catholic Bloggers in the country to be united in defense of Life and in opposition against the RH Bill. I was not able to attend this important meeting because it unfortunately coincide with the opening of classes in Aemilianum College which I must not miss being one of its administrators.
Fortunately, one of our good friends a young Catholic Blogger was able to attend. He beautifully summarized the inspiring talk of Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, the CBCP spokesperson and narrated that our own blog was mentioned and noted upon during the said meeting. Personally, he narrated that this Blog was even opened to be seen by all and there were smiles on the faces of those present while reading it.
Here is the report of our friend in his blog: http://sirbitz.blogspot.com/
Let me present his report:
LIMA: The Blogger's Role today...in Catholic View
(my thoughts after the CBCP Bloggers' Meeting)
I was there when the CBCP Media Office called on a meeting with writers and bloggers today. Though we were little in number, we can still sense some good pot brewing out of the few number of attendees. They were writers who have love for life, and they maintain certain websites which defends life and opposes the alternative resorts which our folks at government try to pass on as law.
For my part, I came as the neophyte, the youngest among them all. Being so, I have a but a little idea on how hard the fight is. Through the experiences shared by the people who were obviously way older in experience, I realized further how deep this endeavor is. Indeed, this is a no-joke. And though I am already writing for the past five years, still this thing is new to me.
What was the meet-up about?
It was about the role of bloggers in the fight for life and family. Moreover, it tackled on writing and blogging in a Christian perspective. As the country's pressing issues take the community into extreme spectra, bloggers would definitely have a helping hand in delivering the right perspectives on the same. Using the Christian slant, we are sure to deliver the right views and present the details in its right shape and form.
The Church had seemed late in seeing the importance of Blogging in the Evangelization. It is especially evident in the Philippines where there are only a little number of Catholic blogsites which contribute to the spiritual growth of the online community. Some blogs on Catholic Faith and Morals, and yet they fear that they could be criticized, or what we may call illegitimate criticism. Others go secular, including the freethinkers, and those who don't care about the faith, and just post ideas just to impress, or to exercise their right of expression. Yet, now through the newly-shown importance of the Church towards bloggers, we can clearly see the great potential that Catholic Blogging could possibly have.
Certain Blogsites like Fr. Abe's site (http://thesplendorofthechurch.blogspot.com/) were given ample notice for their right contribution to the fight for the faith. Fr. Abe's blogsite tackles on Apologetics, and the responses of the Church to the common people's questions, including those of the unbelievers. For those present at the meeting, this is an example of a Catholic Blog which shows adherence to the Church teachings, while maintaining the personal style of delivering it to the reader.
'Media is not only about talking or writing; in our context (as Catholics), it's about delivering Christ's message.' These are the inspiring words of Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, director of CBCP Media Office, the official media output of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. And truly, the Church nowadays considers the media of the present as an effective instruments towards a renewed and integral evangelization. While the secular world of media, including the freethinkers and those who share bad sentiments through their blogposts or tweets, continue to roam around the web and do their own thing, bloggers who are guided by the teachings of the Church and the light of the Holy Spirit are being seen as the beacons of light which guides the readers towards the full understanding of the Magisterium and the Scriptures.
In his message last World Day of Communications, Pope Benedict XVI wrote, In the final analysis, the truth of Christ is the full and authentic response to that human desire for relationship, communion and meaning which is reflected in the immense popularity of social networks. Believers who bear witness to their most profound convictions greatly help prevent the web from becoming an instrument which depersonalizes people, attempts to manipulate them emotionally or allows those who are powerful to monopolize the opinions of others. On the contrary, believers encourage everyone to keep alive the eternal human questions which testify to our desire for transcendence and our longing for authentic forms of life, truly worthy of being lived. It is precisely this uniquely human spiritual yearning which inspires our quest for truth and for communion and which impels us to communicate with integrity and honesty. He invites every Christian who has access to the Internet to be a witness of Jesus in this new avenue of communication and communion. If we really know why we have our FB or twitter account, or a blogsite in my case, and use it in the eyes of Christ, then we are sure to have achieved its goal: of having relationship with people towards the truth of Christ: LOVE, without boundaries.
In other words, we are called, as writers by hobby or profession, to write as Christians, read as Christians, and understand and comprehend as Christians. This is what Catholic bloggers aim to do these days. We tend to show the Philippine blogosphere that we have something to say, that being a part of the fourth estate we are also to give information at the light of God's guidance. Before, we are just a silent voice, with a little audience to hear us. Now, we begin to stand, and shout to the top of their lungs that we have Christ in their side, and with his divine guidance, we can lead our fellow faithful towards life and truth!
As Msgr. Pepe said it, 'What we want is not just Media in the Church, but Media as Christians.' Through the bloggers' meeting, I realized that my blog should be a continuing avenue of spreading God's Word and of the Church's eager teachings while still maintaining my personal views and showing-off my witty writing skills at the same time. Five years is yet a young age, there is still a long way to go. Nevertheless, the meeting is just an headstart towards what the CBCP Media Office is desired of us: to unite as Catholic writers, opposing the factors which could kill life and the family, and promote the sanctity and dignity of what it is being a Catholic.
And SirBitz@Blogger would always be there to respond to the call of Catholic Blogging. It would always be of service to the Christian Community through posting enlightening ideas, and views which would help form the spirit for it to be in tip-top shape. This would be its vow, as it celebrates its fifth anniversary. Though we could not go straight-forward in blogging (like our friends in apologetics or resources), nevertheless the views and opinions that you would be reading here from time to time, would be written, as it always was, in the Light of Christ.
(Just when I thought my anniversary post as a blogger would be a flashback on my first ever blogpost, midnight came and this post was saved at the day of the posting of my very first post. Well, a work of Divine Providence!)
And now, for some pluggings...

We need more of this. We need a united front against those who smear the True Church of God. We also need it to educate our Catholic brothers and sisters to feed them enough knowledge in defending the Church.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO BRO. FERDINAND. WE ALSO NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU.
ReplyDeleteBROD. SINCE YOU ARE A CONVERT FROM OTHER RELIGION PLEASE WRITE YOUR STORY IN AT LEAST ONE PAGE. AND I WILL POST IT HERE TO INSPIRE OTHERS.

ReplyDeleteHA HA HA... WALA AKONG PERA TO PAY FOR TRANSPORTATION GOING TO ROME. I'VE NEVER BEEN IN ROME... YET. HE HE HE...
ReplyDeleteThank you Father Abe for even considering my reversion story. I will not name the churches in my story because as I’ve told you I want to remain anonymous not because I have something to hide, but to protect my family. The name of the evangelical church that I attended is LIBERTY BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH In San Joaquin, Pasig. The name of the fundamentalist church I attended is BIBLE FELLOWSHIP CHURCH in Bagong ILOG, PASIG. And the INC church I went for indoctrination is located in A. Luna Pateros. Father this information is for you only and please do not post this part.
ReplyDeleteSome people say that they are Catholics because their faith was challenged. I on the other hand am a Catholic because I didn’t know my faith!
My adventure started during my collage years and ended 25 years later. It is a story of gradual conversion in faith and finally in spiritual life. I went to my fundamentalist friends’ church. The fellowship was great I felt alive and renewed; my new friends started telling me their conversion stories, how they were led by the Holy Spirit to this church, how they were deceived by the “whore of Babylon,” by the “anti-Christ.” How wrong for the Catholic Church to worship Mary, and that Mary had other children, the unbiblical practice of praying the rosary and saints, purgatory, the mass, and the other Church invented doctrines to make money and put the people in slavery. I read these bible verses and started to feel liberated; it felt like I was the first one who really understood the bible (looking back, I thought I was being too arrogant). When my cousins from the US found out that I was attending a fundamentalist church, they sent me Jack Chick materials that propelled my hatred of the Catholic Church. Then another group of friends asked me to join their Bible Baptist church. So I was being indoctrinated by these two churches. I went with them for 5 years.
My sister started to question the church I’ve been attending and warned me that they are very literalist in their interpretation of the bible. I debated her and my uncle and aunts who had the same religious experience but were lead back to the church, about the unbiblical doctrines of the Church; four against one. I told them that the Catholic Church is actually the one who is being very literal in the interpretation of the bible; I cited the carrying of the cross of some people during lent to follow what Christ said that one should carry their own cross. I saw them unable to answer me about the whore of Babylon. It felt so good to be able to win an argument against my sister a cum laude in PUP and against my uncle and aunts who were both bank managers.
Then my fundamentalist and evangelical friends group of friends started debating my other group of friends who happened to be members of INC. I thought that the INC won the debate so I started hanging out with them also. I was confused because all sides were pressing me about their churches and all sides make sense to me. When I was alone with my evangelical and fundamentalist friends, their argument made sense, then when I was alone with my INC friends their arguments made sense.so I prayed to God to show me the truth. Late 1985 we went to Ateneo to play basketball. I sat down with a man who was reading a book about Mary. I started a conversation with him and challenged him about his catholic belief. The man allowed me to talk for almost 10-15 minutes without contradicting or stopping me. Then finally he gave me an advice, "Son it is good that you are searching God at your young age. Keep looking and ask God to open your heart and not to harden it. Pray for this every time you read your bible.“ Then he introduced himself as a priest. He said goodbye and left me.
Congrats fr. abe, alam ko may tamang panahon inilalaan sayo para makilala ng lubos ang yong apostolate. In God's time. Keep up the work. and keep healthy hehehehe
ReplyDeleteDear Bro. Allan,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
Well, we actually don't need recognition from our own side. He he he... Because we are already recognized by the enemies. He he he...
Each of us must do our own apostolate regardless of recognition or not. But if there is a recognition it's nice though. Ha ha ha...
I read and read the NT over and over again probably about 2 dozen times. What really stuck to me are the following bible verses:
ReplyDeleteMT 16: 18-20,18:17-18, 28: 18-20,
Jn 8:32, 14:6, 16, 26, 16:13 18:37, 10:16, 20:21,
Lk 10:16
1 Jn 4:1-6
1 Tim 3:15, 4:14. 5:22, 2 Tim 2:2.
These are very powerful bible verses that talks about the ONE AUTORITATIVE CHURCH, THE PROTECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT OF THIS CHURCH, AND THE TRUTH.
I asked myself these following questions
1. Who are these “WE” and “US” in 1 John 4:6?
2. Who and where is the Church in MT 16:18 and 18:17-18?
3. Who have the keys now in Mt 16:19?
4. If the church is protected by the Holy Spirit why all these confusion and different denominations?
5. If Jesus is the truth, why did he leave his Church divided and competing with one another?
6. Where are these people now in Luke 10:16?
No matter how hard I tried to pray to the Holy Spirit to open the meaning of these bible verses, I can’t properly explain them. I asked about these bible verses to the INC minister and my INC friends, my pastors, my evangelical Baptist and fundamentalist friends, and I wasn’t really surprised that I got different answers, all say that I should believe them since they have the Holy Spirit (my INC friends never claimed that they have the Holy Spirit). So I told myself that I cannot find the truth if I keep on listening to my friends. I have to empty myself and study on my own with the help of the Holy Spirit. I have to find the truth and I believe that I can find the answer in the bible since I believe (at that time) that it is the final authority. I said that I have to stay either a fundamentalist, an evangelical or convert to INC, the Catholic Church wasn’t an option back then since I was totally convinced that it was the “Whore of Babylon.” I spent almost Php 5000 buying Christian history books.
To my surprise I can’t find my fundamentalist/ evangelical belief in the early history of Christianity! My pastors cannot even answer who these Early Church Fathers were! The INC minister I think just dismissed them as pagan corruption (I can’t remember his exact words) and that I should not worry about it since Christ Church was restored in Iglesia Ni Cristo. I read some quotes from Sts. Justin Martyr, Ignatius, Polycarp, Irenaeus, Clement, from Origen, Tertullian, Melito of Sardis, Clement of Alexandria, and so on, and that is just the first 300 years of Christianity. I did not read anything about bible alone, faith alone, once saved always saved, total apostasy, but all about Catholic beliefs that I already rejected!
Then I bought more books about doctrines, theology, Christology. I spent a fortune buying books, most of them were lost since I can’t remember who borrowed them. I was so eager to share the books that opened my mind that I forgot who had what. I slowly started to digest these Christian history books and how they relate to the bible. My world was shaken; I can’t believe why I was rejecting the Church that the bible and the history books support? Why did I believe these pastors and my friends without examining their words? I answered all those questions above by catechizing myself. I did not get any formal catechism at all.
One time I attended a Catholic charismatic seminar in San Carlos Seminary. It was conducted by an Indian priest named Father De Souza. He gave us pamphlets about apologetics written by Peter Kreeft. Then my friend and co- worker explored the possibility of becoming a priest. After a few months I opted not to go because I know that it is not for me. My friend opted out too. 5 years later he explored it again, but opted out again.
BRO. FERDINAND,
ReplyDeleteWHAT A VERY MOVING REVERSION STORY YOU'VE GOT. IT'S SO INTERESTING BECAUSE IT IS NOT ONE TIME EVENT BUT A GRADUAL OPENING TO THE TRUTH.
THAT ATENEO PRIEST MUST BE A HOLY PRIEST. HIS WORDS WERE SIMPLE YET SO POWERFUL. HE IS AS GENTLE AS A DOVE... WHILE IM AN EAGLE. HA HA HA...
THANK YOU SO. I WILL SHARE THIS ON THE MAIN WALL.
Back in 1988 or 1989, my friend and I read about bishop Lefevre. We both said that this guy was making a fool of himself and leading his flock to hell. Then in 1999, I read about him a gain and I got interested with his ideas, about the sedevacantist. I thought that this group made good arguments, but then again, the issue of authority reminded me that only the Catholic Church can be trusted since the Vicar of Christ is the only one who have possession of the keys of the Kingdom ( aside from the king himself of course). And no bishop can practice or exercise the power of the keys without in union with the Vicar of Christ.
ReplyDeleteMy faith was shaken again around 2001 when I continued reading the Christian History up to 1200. I felt that the Orthodox Church was short changed by the Catholics in history. But reading the history again this time with the help of the Old Testament, and the theological and historical significance of the Keys of the Kingdom, the significance of the INFALLIBILITY DOCTRINE and how it relates to the divine authority of the Church and the protection of the Holy Spirit, everything just suddenly made sense to me, that the Church is REALLY PROTECTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, THAT OUR LORD JESUS KEPT HIS PROMISE TO BE WITH HIS CHURCH UNTIL THE END OF TIME, AND THAT THE FATHER IS MAKING THE CHURCH GROW, A TRIPLE PROTECTION FROM THE HOLY TRINITY.
Now I am exploring the possibility of becoming a deacon... a new adventure, maybe when my kids are on their own and I finally am retired.
I still have this prayer whenever I read my bible for spiritual reading. I can't even remember where I got that prayer.
ReplyDeleteGod you are now speaking to me. Holy Spirit, you inspired this words, illuminate my mind to understand them. Come Holy Spirit, enlighten my heart, my understanding. Do not let my heart harden but open it my Lord. Help me to recognize the eternal truth that I need to please God.
Speak oh Lord, for your servant is listening; here I am Lord. God, You and I are together now, speak to me, I am listening.
Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. I'm blind; I don;t see you in the world. I don't see you in my own life, in my problems, in my marriage, and in my family. Help me understand.
