Panicked Catholics flee violence in northern Nigeria

ABUJA, NIGERIA, January 26 (CNA) .- As many as 35,000 people have fled their homes in northern Nigeria after continuing attacks from the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. Their numbers include a large number of Catholics who report that churches have been destroyed.

"There is panic. Many just leave everything behind, and run for safety, because they do not know when violence might flare up again," a source told Aid to the Church in Need on Jan. 24.

On Jan. 20, Boko Haram killed at least 185 people in attacks that rocked Kano city, located in the state of Borno, the Associated Press reports. The coordinated attacks used cars with heavy explosives and suicide bombers who targeted police stations. Men in security uniforms gunned down government officials.

Churches have also been destroyed in Maidiguri in Borno and the city of Bauchi, in Bauchi state.

"It is the stated goal of Boko Haram to make the whole of the north free of Christians," one source told Aid to the Church in Need.

At the beginning of January, Boko Haram spokesman Abu Qaqa gave Christians a three-day ultimatum to leave the area.

Refugees are headed to where they believe it is safe, especially the city of Jos.

Boko Haram's name means "western education is sinful" in Nigeria's Hausa language. The group has killed at least 935 people since its 2009 uprising, and more than 250 since the beginning of 2012, Human Rights Watch reports.

The Catholic bishops of Nigeria have decried the actions of the group.

Analysts believe the group intends to make the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, appear unable to control the country.

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Sets Forth Principles

BRUSSELS, Belgium, JAN. 26, 2012 (Zenit.org).- A decision by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to pass a resolution that calls for the prohibition of euthanasia, is being hailed as a major pro-life victory.

In a communiqué today, the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ) reported that the resolution passed, setting the principle: "Euthanasia, in the sense of the intentional killing by act or omission of a dependent human being for his or her alleged benefit, must always be prohibited." This is the first time in recent decades that euthanasia has been so clearly rejected by a European political institution, the council explained.

It is a major victory in the battle to defend life and the ECLJ noted that it came a year after the European Court asserted that there is no right to euthanasia or assisted suicide under the European Convention. The resolution should also have an impact on a forthcoming decision by the European Court in the case of Koch v. Germany, concerning a ban on assisted suicide in Germany, said Grégor Puppinck, Director of the ECLJ.

The purpose of the resolution (No 1859/2012), passed Wednesday, is to define the principles that should govern the practice of "living wills" or "advance directives" in Europe.

The "living wills" or "advance directives" are aimed at enabling patients to express in advance their wishes regarding medical intervention or treatments, in case they are not able to express their preferences at the time of the intervention. The directives may apply, for example, when there is doubt about whether to resuscitate a patient or to continue to use extraordinary means to maintain someone alive.

Because these "living wills" or "advance directives" are open to many abuses, and can be a backdoor for introducing euthanasia or assisted suicide into legislation, the PACE has made a list of principles on how to govern this practice in the 47 states of the Council of Europe.

According to the ECLJ the list is based on principles elaborated in three documents previously adopted in the Council of Europe, including the convention on human rights and biomedicine (Oviedo Convention), which legally binds the majority of member states. Because of growing concerns about euthanasia, the Assembly judged it is necessary to state explicitly the basic principle that intentional killing must always be prohibited.

"This resolution is a clear indication that the growing majority of Europeans is opposed to euthanasia," said Puppinck.

Even if this resolution is not legally binding on member states, it has a real influence on the legislative process and on the judicial process, especially on the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, the ECLJ communiqué stated.

WASHINGTON—The Catholic bishops of the United States called “literally unconscionable” a decision by the Obama Administration to continue to demand that sterilization, abortifacients and contraception be included in virtually all health plans. Today's announcement means that this mandate and its very narrow exemption will not change at all; instead there will only be a delay in enforcement against some employers.

“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The cardinal-designate continued, “To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable.It is as much an attack on access to health care as on religious freedom. Historically this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty."

The HHS rule requires that sterilization and contraception – including controversial abortifacients – be included among “preventive services” coverage in almost every healthcare plan available to Americans. “The government should not force Americans to act as if pregnancy is a disease to be prevented at all costs,” added Cardinal-designate Dolan.

At issue, the U.S. bishops and other religious leaders insist, is the survival of a cornerstone constitutionally protected freedom that ensures respect for the conscience of Catholics and all other Americans.

“This is nothing less than a direct attack on religion and First Amendment rights,” said Franciscan Sister Jane Marie Klein, chairperson of the board at Franciscan Alliance, Inc., a system of 13 Catholic hospitals. “I have hundreds of employees who will be upset and confused by this edict. I cannot understand it at all.”

Daughter of Charity Sister Carol Keehan, president and chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, voiced disappointment with the decision. Catholic hospitals serve one out of six people who seek hospital care annually.

“This was a missed opportunity to be clear on appropriate conscience protection,” Sister Keehan said.

Cardinal-designate Dolan urged that the HHS mandate be overturned.

“The Obama administration has now drawn an unprecedented line in the sand,” he said. “The Catholic bishops are committed to working with our fellow Americans to reform the law and change this unjust regulation. We will continue to study all the implications of this troubling decision.”

Forcing contraception insurance coverage goes too far

Archbishop Timothy Dolan has lambasted the Obama administration for putting health policy ahead of moral teachings.

President Obama’s health chief decreed Friday that the Catholic Church must provide its employees with health insurance coverage for contraception, its moral stance against birth control be damned.

Wrong, wrong, high-handedly, obtusely wrong.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius took Obamacare’s philosophy of equal insurance for all to a level of zealotry that reduced a deeply held matter of conscience to a bothersome trifle.

Presumably, the President was fully briefed on a decision of this magnitude. If so, he made a fundamental error that will only add to a sense among many faith-based communities that the White House has a thing against religion.

It was less than two weeks ago that the Supreme Court unanimously and thunderingly scolded the administration for trying to tell churches and church-based organization that the government knew best as to who they could hire and fire.

Because of the church’s size and reach, Sebelius’ ruling will apply most broadly to Catholic organizations, but they apply to affiliates of other religions that bar contraception and sterilization.

Church leaders, including New York’s Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, had lobbied vigorously to persuade Sebelius to grant an exemption from Obamacare’s uniform-care-for-all standard.

She went only so far as to grant nonprofit groups that do not provide contraceptive coverage because of religious views an additional year “to adapt to this new rule.” She is sadly mistaken to think a transition period compares in any significant way with timeless belief.

The secretary also contended that she had nicely threaded a needle by giving a pass to groups that have the primary purpose of inculcating religious values, primarily employ individuals who share those values and primarily serve people who share them as well.

That essentially covers the parish rectory. It leaves out Catholic schools, hospitals and social service organizations — the vast sweep of Catholic Charities — because they serve all comers who need help, regardless of faith.

Dolan, who serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, was unstinting in saying the Obama administration had “drawn an unprecedented line in the sand” with the decision. An epic confrontation is in the offing.

While Obama’s one-year grace period will put off the day of reckoning until after the presidential election, it is already clear how events will play out. The Catholic Church will never submit to such an order and will move Earth and heaven to hold to beliefs that happen to be out of favor with a President of the United States.

Youth a strong presence at DC March for Life

WASHINGTON D.C., January 23 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Young people from across America made up a significant amount of the huge crowds that gathered in Washington, D.C. for the annual March for Life.

John Hughes, an 18-year-old student at Seton Hall Preparatory School in New Jersey, told CNA that he supports the event because "to not be pro-life is to be ignorant."

"Science has shown that life begins in the womb," he said, arguing that abortion advocates demonstrate a "lack of responsibility" in ignoring the science of fetal development.

Even most U.S. states, Hughes added, recognize an unborn baby as a living child if both mother and baby are killed in a violent crime.

The college student was among the massive crowds of young people who weathered fog and rain in the nation's capital to attend the annual March for Life on Jan. 23.

Organizers said they believe the event attracted more participants than last year's estimated 400,000.

The march was held one day after the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States.

Hughes said that he is "one hundred percent" hopeful about the future of the pro-life movement, given several legislative pro-life efforts on the state level such as abortion restrictions or Planned Parenthood defunding.

"It's a youth movement," he said.

Kari Boyd, a student at Michigan State University, added that she believes abortion hurts women.

She explained that Planned Parenthood and other organizations that support abortion "are not telling women the truth" when they say that an unborn baby is a "blob of cells" and fail to show women that the fetus they carry is "another human being."

Support for women's rights does not create the "right to kill an innocent unborn child," Boyd said. "Women don't have the right to murder."

Matt Menendez, age 20, is the president of Harvard right to life. He explained that although the United States is largely pro-life, there are only a small minority of students at Harvard "who are willing to speak up" in defense of life.

"We're always fighting an uphill battle," he said. While the work is "very difficult," it is also "very, very rewarding."

He said that the group regularly receives calls and emails "from people who say they're afraid to be prolife."

Menendez described the group's work as "fighting an intellectual battle" in the hopes of "opening discourse" on a topic that is considered somewhat "taboo" and is "often ignored" at Harvard.

"It's really energizing to be part of that movement," he said.

Luciana Milano, another member of Harvard's right to life group, attended the march for the first time this year. She explained that attending Harvard strengthened her pro-life views because she was forced to defend her beliefs to those who disagreed with her.

She said that although the experience "has been difficult," it has made her "a stronger believer" in the dignity of all human life."

Describing the march as "awesome," Milano said that she was impressed and overwhelmed by the large number of people attending the event.

"The second that I saw large amounts of people, I almost cried," she said.

March for Life speakers urge national pro-life leadership

WASHINGTON D.C., January 23 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Pro-life politicians spoke to participants at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. about the need for America's leaders to guide the country in affirming the value of every human life.

U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) explained that "life and liberty" are two foundational principles that are intertwined to "form the core of our national character."

"When we affirm the dignity of life, we affirm our commitment to freedom," he said. When we fail to defend life, "freedom itself is diminished."

Hundreds of thousands of Americans, including many young people, gathered in the nation's capital for the annual March for Life on Jan. 23, one day after the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States.

Prior to a march to Capitol Hill, attendees gathered on the National Mall to hear from congressmen and pro-life leaders.

Speaker Boehner delivered opening remarks at the march, in which he affirmed that "human life is not a political or economic commodity."

The Speaker explained that he has 11 siblings. "So I've never considered 'pro-life' to be a label or a position," he said. "It's just who I am."

Defending life is "not a matter of party," he said. Rather, it is "about standing on principle."

Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), who is co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus, told the crowd that the violent death of innocent children "is not an American value."

He thanked those present at the march for their "selfless struggle by prayer, fasting and works" to participate in what he called "the greatest human rights movement on earth."

The congressman also criticized President Obama for instituting policies and funding decisions that promote abortion throughout his last three years in office.

He explained that by appointing abortion advocates to key administrative positions, the president has worked to integrate abortion into national and international programs.

Rep. Smith observed that under President Obama the federal government has given more than $100 million dollars to the U.N. Population Fund, an organization that supports China's one child policy, which relies on forced abortions and sterilizations.

The administration is also "lavishly" funding embryo-destroying stem cell research, he added, and organizations including Planned Parenthood are now titled "partners" of the U.S. government.

In addition, Congressman Smith warned, the pro-life movement is being threatened by the president's "systematic undermining of conscience protections."

He pointed to a federal contraception mandate that was finalized by the Health and Human Services Department on Jan. 20, as one of those actions by the Obama administration that is targeting people with pro-life convictions.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said on Jan. 20 that the administration would not expand a religious exemption for employers who object to a requirement that insurance plans cover contraception as part of "preventative services." The policy requires free coverage for sterilization and contraception, including some drugs that can cause abortions.

"Everyone must comply regardless of moral objections or religious tenets simply because Obama says so," Rep. Smith said.

He also noted that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was recently "thrown out" of a federal grant program to aid human trafficking victims because it would not offer referrals for abortion and contraception.

The congressman emphasized the importance of the 2012 presidential election and said that if President Obama is elected to a second term, he will work "aggressively" to force "conformity and complicity" on the matter of abortion.

"No one who values life can sit this one out," he said.

Young people are hope of pro-life movement, says Texas cardinal

WASHINGTON D.C., January 23 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston told over a thousand young people at a prayer vigil in D.C. that the pro-life movement depends on their loving witness in the face of a hostile culture.

"You are a good infection," the cardinal told the youth gathered at the opening Mass for the National Prayer Vigil for Life. "Do not underestimate your presence."

More than 10,000 people gathered on the evening of Jan. 22 for Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, including many young people from across the country.

The date marked the 39th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in America.

Cardinal DiNardo, who serves as chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Pro-Life Activities, was the principal celebrant and homilist at the opening Mass, which was followed by confessions, a rosary, Night Prayer and holy hours throughout the night.

The Catholic University of America hosted almost 1,300 pilgrims overnight.

The vigil concluded on the morning of Jan. 23 with Morning Prayer and a closing Mass, at which Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan of New York was the principal celebrant and homilist.

Participants were then able to attend the March for Life in downtown D.C., along Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court building.

In his homily, Cardinal DiNardo spoke about the call of Jonah. Although he first ran away, Jonah eventually realized "that the call of the Lord is serious." When he finally responded to that call, his preaching converted the people of Ninevah.

"We are walking through Ninevah," the cardinal said, emphasizing the need for "personal conversion."

With millions of lives destroyed by abortion in the last 39 years, he noted the need for ministries of conversion, as well as compassion and mercy.

Through the work of such ministries, he said, "we witness the miracle of Christ's mercy and healing grace" as broken hearts are "made whole" and "filled with new peace and hope."

The cardinal also expressed grave concerns that the pro-life movement is threatened by recent attacks on religious freedom in America.

On Jan. 20, the Department of Health and Human Services finalized a rule that will require virtually all health insurance plans to include sterilization and contraception Ã¢Â€Â“ including drugs that cause abortion Ã¢Â€Â“ free of charge.

Cardinal DiNardo explained that this mandate violates the religious liberty and rights of conscience of Catholics and other religious employers by forcing citizens "to directly purchase what violates our beliefs."

He called for "timely and unwavering actions" to defend religious freedom.

At the same time, the cardinal expressed hope for the future, observing signs of good news, such as the "record numbers" of pro-life laws passed on the state level in recent years.

In many ways, the youth are "weaving Christ into our culture," he said, urging them to show the loving face of Christ to those who are hostile.

"Don't be compromised in your dedication to the protection of life."

Hehe. Nice term used Father. First time ko pang narinig sa buong buhay ko. Thanks for checking my blog and for your email. Can you be my spiritual adviser though I am plane away from you Father? You know what I just want to share with you something. I and my girlfriend named Orlane got into vehicular accident on Dec. 23, 2011 while on the way to attend misa de gallo. We were both hurt but I am the one who suffered a lot. My girlfriend just had a wound in her back ( Thank God ) while I got scratches, wounds on my face, and for that i could have died. I realized this Father that when you are on the verge death, you would not feel any pain. During our accident, I did not feel anything. I was like dreaming when things happened. I felt pain when I was in the hospital and when I came to. For what happened to us, i did not blame God for causing that accident. That's true. I only realized that God saved me from death. Jesus was there in spirit and saved me from my untimely death. That's what I believe. Imagine, i got discharged from the hospital the day after I was admitted, and the Wounds on my face were healing fast which lasted only a few days. God did not only save me but healed my wounds. You know Father Abe, simula noon, I decided to serve God in many ways by changing my bad attitudes, turning away from all my unrighteous deeds, from sinning. from evil. I know I still have some of those but I believe that God Jesus is working through me on a step by step process. I can feel Him. I know i don't deserve Him but what I know is He loves me so much that no one can take that love from me. In Fact, God gave me a second chance to live a good christian life. Maybe He does not want me to go to Hell. hehe. Also, maybe it's a coincidence or it's God's plan to help me meet you online so through you I can find His answers to my questions. A pronouncement or a definitive pronouncement is not an invention sir. For this, Catholic Answers has this to say:

Matt. 28:18–20; 1 Tim. 3:15, 4:11) thinks the faithful can be helped by particular emphasis being drawn to some already-existing belief. The Church previously has held on the belief mentioned here as evidenced by direct or indirect allusions of early Christian leaders A.K.A. Church Fathers. So to speak, it “needs warrant from the Holy Scriptures” & is “consistent with the pronouncement…”. Again, the claim that Mary was immaculately conceived was made on the grounds of “Bible” & “Oral Tradition”. Based on these sources, the Bishop of Rome only validated this doctrine.

By logic, if the Person of Jesus Christ is God, then it must be inferred that He must be free from the inconsistencies of sin. Because he was Word became flesh, does his giving up of divine privileges to embrace humanity [Philippians 2:7] expose his nature to the imperfections of sin?

If no, by logic, then the womb by which he lay for 9 months should be free from sin by virtue of his being God. This is also in perfect allusion again to the proto-evangelium:

At the rally, Dr. Vansen Wong, an obstetrician-gynecologist, told his story of performing abortions to pay off his medical bills, saying he ended hundreds of lives over the course of seven years working at an evening abortion clinic for his employer.

"Abortion is barbaric, abortion is intolerable," Wong declared. He now works with a pro-life medical clinic where pregnant women receive ultrasounds. "Abortion has no place in any civilized society," the doctor added.

A former Miss West Virginia, Jacquie Stalnaker, told of being forced by her boyfriend to get an abortion,and of the toll it took for 24 years. Stalnaker, who is now a regional representative for the Silent No More Campaign, an organization of women who have had abortions, urged the crowd to get pro-choice friends to visit the group's Web site to hear the stories of women who have had abortions.

Other speakers included Lori Hoye, an African American activist whose mother became pregnant at 15 and whose sister had an abortion, and the Baptist preacher Reverend Clenard Childress who has spoken at seven of the eight walks.

Protestors in Spain call for removal of offensive Christ image

MADRID, SPAIN, January 20 (CNA) .- The civil rights group Hazteoir.org urged the mayor of Madrid to remove an offensive picture from a photo exhibit showing a Christ-like figure who is naked with a crucifix covering the genital area.

Group spokesperson Ogla Cuquerella said the photo attacks "the religious sentiments" of believers and the "right of Christians to have their symbols be respected."

According to Europa Press, over 20,000 signatures have been sent to Mayor Ana Botella of Madrid calling for the removal of the image.

The controversial piece is titled "Inferno," and was taken by photographer Sergio Parra for an exhibit at Madrid's Spanish Theater. The show opened in the city on Jan. 13 and has already been targeted by numerous critics.

Similar protests occurred when the photo was put on display last year in the city of Merida, where citizens asked governor Jose Antonio Monago to intervene to have it taken down.

The Immaculate Mother and her Child-King

One of the most worst attacks of the anti-Catholics was against the Mother of God which is the Blessed Virgin Mary. I would like to expose the exaggerations and wrong exposition of the anti-Catholics towards the Blessed Virgin Mary.

About the Immaculate Conception

This dogma was officially defined by His Holiness Pope Pius IX in his Bull Ineffabilis Deus dated on December 8, 1854 which says:

“We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the first instant of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace of the Omnipotent God, in virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of mankind, was preserved immaculate from all stain of original sin, has been revealed by God, and therefore should firmly and constantly be believed by all the faithful”.

The anti-Catholics thought the the whole dogma was an invention of the Catholic Church and is unbiblical they even used these verses to oppose the dogma and to invalidate that Mary was not sinless:

Romans 3:23- which says that all have sinned and that no one was exempted from it.

Luke 1:46-48- that Mary needed a Savior as she said in the Magnificat, meaning that she was like one of us who is a sinner.

By using these verses they tried hard to debunk the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, their argument dwells only on these arguments, but if we look around at the Bible the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was really in the Bible and Christ gave us a logical explanation concerning it.

In the book of Genesis it says:

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Reading upon the anti-catholic’s interpretation of this verse, they focused more on the two last stanza rather than on the whole, if we try to look at the whole verse, we can logically noticed, that yes in the end, Christ or the messiah would be the one the crush the serpent’s head, but they forgot the first two lines which says ‘I will put enmity between you and the woman’. If we try to read the whole verse again and again, it was the Mother and Child who would be a great threat to the serpent, the Mother cooperated with her son. God has already planned that the woman would be a threat to the serpent because the offspring that she will bear would be the one to defeat and crush the serpent’s head. This woman cannot be Eve, since the first Eve listened and obeyed the serpent which made him a slave of the serpent which is sin, it cannot be Israel, since there are a lot of verses saying that Israel became unfaithful and it cannot be the Church since the Church was the bride of the messiah, there is no other person in the Bible which bears the Son of God other than the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us a logical explanation why the mother of the messiah cannot be a slave of sin, because a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand, Jesus said:

“How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him.” (Mark 3:23-26)

In other words, if Satan will contradict himself and handed over his servant or slave to his enemy to defeat him, then he cannot stand, he will fall, since he tolerated rebellion in his own kingdom. This woman who will be an enemy to the serpent should and must be different from the first woman in the garden who listened to the serpent and gave herself into sin. If Mary was conceived with original sin, then how can she be an enemy of the devil, how can she be a threat to him and she will not be different from the first woman, since both of them would be serving one master and that is the devil. This verse in the book of Mark is already a logical explanation why Mary was Immaculate. Yes, Mary needed a savior because she cannot be immaculate without God’s intervention, meaning that God had already saved her from sin at the first instant of his conception. Romans 3:23 is not an valid excuse for non-Catholics to force Catholics that the Immaculate Conception is absurd, since it was Christ himself who gave us the explanation. And isn’t it been figured out in the book of Revelation, a sign wherein, the woman will give birth to a child whom the dragon hated. It is written:

“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.” (Revelation 12:1-2)

“Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all nations with an iron rod.” (Revelation 12:4-5)

“When the dragon saw that it had been thrown down to the earth, it pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.” (Revelation 12:13)

“The dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.” (Revelation 12:17)

If we notice the verses from Genesis and from the book of Revelation, we can see the repetition and similarity of the two verses, since the book of revelation emphasized the fulfillment of what was been said by God in book of Genesis to the serpent. If Mary would be conceived with sin, then the dragon must not be angry with her since she was his servant. It is absurd to think that a person who will crush the head of the serpent which is Christ, the messiah, the Savior would be born from one of the slave of satan and sin, which contradicts God’s promise in Genesis and its prefiguration in the Book of Revelation. Since Christ is the New Adam which is different from the old Adam therefore the woman who bore her cannot be the same woman as Eve, since Eve became a slave of sin after she listened to the serpent. Meaning both mother and son should be in enmity with the evil one and that is the logic why the Immaculate Conception is Biblical.

In other words, God cannot contradict himself in using a servant of Satan in order to defeat Satan, that would be contradicting his statement to the devil in the book of Genesis when he put enmity between the serpent and the woman.

Silence is an integral part of the life of the Church. Try to look at it; churches, monasteries, abbeys, seminaries—all of these are places associated with silence. This is so since the Church believes that it is in man’s inner silence that he is united with his Creator; God speaks in the silence of man’s heart.

One may argue, nevertheless, that silence is not the way to address the pressing tragedy of child molestation devastating the Catholic Church. The issue across Europe and certain parts of America has been spreading like wildfire, finding itself just an inch away from the door steps of the Holy See. The Supreme Pontiff himself is now implicated. Apparently, when he was still Archbishop of Munich, Germany, as the then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, he allegedly allowed an erring priest to resume pastoral work after just a few sessions of psychiatric rehabilitation. Eventually, the said priest was convicted of child molestation. When Ratzinger was eventually promoted to head the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith which is the Doctrinal Watchdog of the Catholic Church, he allegedly ordered the quashing of the Ecclesiastical hearing of a priest in Wisconsin who molested 200 deaf boys in a Church-ran welfare home for the deaf.

Where are these things going?

Unfortunately, people tend to make conclusive generalizations without trying first to look into the matter. Try to consider the following:

1. In private corporations, there are appointments and even terminations issued by the Human Resources. In letters of such kind, more often than not, the top management is furnished with a copy. You do not expect the President of a corporation, for example, to read all the copies furnished to him daily especially that such letters are merely for filing purposes, do you? Same with the Munich case. The decision to reinstate the erring priest was a decision of the then Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Munich. In the decision, Ratzinger was allegedly furnished with a copy. Though physical evidence would establish that the then Archbishop was furnished a copy of the decision of reinstatement, there is still a greater chance that he could have not read the said letter, hence unaware of the reinstatement.

2. The Wisconsin case is a little more technical. The molestation, which occurred between the 1960’s-1980’s, only re-surfaced recently—after the statutory 10-year moratorium for a case to be filed has lapsed. More or less, the quashing of the ecclesiastical hearing was ordered—not by the then Cardinal Ratzinger but by a deputy, actually—to halt a process which would produce results that would only be deemed moot and academic; they cannot run after the pedophile priest, Rev. Murphy, because the moratorium to file a case has lapsed—and even if it hasn’t, Rev. Murphy has been dead for years now. Even democracy follows certain standard operating procedures or protocols in dealing with litigation. What more could you expect from a strictly and absolutely hierarchical organization such as the Catholic Church?

3. With regard to Rev. Murphy’s letter of leniency sent to the then Cardinal Ratzinger when the latter was still the head of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (SCDF), I do not think it was directly acted upon. On the first place, the issue at hand was a disciplinary matter, not doctrinal. The most extensive way that the then Cardinal could have done in this regard is to endorse the letter to the suitable authority, i.e., the head of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy. I do not think he could have granted the leniency since it is not his then office’s concern.

Why was the Church silent on this all this time? I have said that silence is integral to the life of the Church, and I think I have to go back to that proposition but in a different angle.

The Catholic Church, though nowadays other would perceive it as similar to a gigantic corporation, is still founded on spiritual grounds. From time to time, people see that the Catholic Church is pursuing political and temporal interests just like any other state. Nevertheless, the ultimate and supreme goal of the Church is still geared towards the spiritual homeland where all are united under the love of the Almighty. The Vatican is indeed a sovereign state, but it is set apart from all the other nations by the fact that it holds unto the Divine Right.

Hence, the silence of the Vatican over the issues of abuse in the Church cannot be arbitrarily concluded as a cover-up. Unlike the usual states with defined litigation procedures where hearings of a case are publicized for transparency and public right to information, the Vatican holds the protocol of silence in every proceeding that it undertakes. The election of the Pontiff is the best example. No one is ever allowed to divulge the process of election unless willfully permitted by the Pope-elect, otherwise a Cardinal elector would face the pain of excommunication from the Church—no, a Cardinal who would divulge the electoral proceedings would not just lose his ecclesiastic hierarchical status; he loses his being a Catholic all together. The secrecy on the election of the Church’s head is so designed such that it will be free from external influences especially from third parties who might be interested in the Papacy to advance personal gains. Though this is only theoretical nowadays, such is so true during the middle ages where powerful families would be killing one another just to have a family member on the throne of Peter.

As far as proceedings considering erring priests are concerned, silence is practiced under the same light of freedom from external influences. However, more than that, silence is practiced over such proceedings to protect all the parties and persons involved. No, it’s not like the regular process of Bureaus of Investigation that would strip-off a suspected criminal before the public’s eye, inviting prejudice and bias against the person and luring trials by publicity. The ending: the person has been condemned even before he was sentenced. The Church, by way of contrast, holds everything under great secrecy. Aside from protecting the identities of anyone involved, the Church believes more in salvation, rather than damnation; in forgiveness, rather than condemnation; in love, rather than hatred; in union, rather than division; in acceptance, rather than rejection; in a repentant heart, rather than one that is as hard as stone. The Church believes in Christ more than it believes anyone in this world.

However, I know it should not stop here. Assuming—and believing—that the Pontiff is not really red-handed in both the Munich and Wisconsin abuses when he was still archbishop, he must take responsibility now that he is the Pope. The perpetrator of the Wisconsin case may be dead by now, but the wounds left about by the abuse lives on with the victims. While as a devout Catholic I respect the silence protocol being implemented by the Church, it must nevertheless take bold steps to rectify the mistakes by handing-over to the secular authorities those who commit pedophilia and other forms of sexual abuse. If it wants to hold trials in secrecy, it may do so; however, when and when someone is proven guilty, the Church must be willing to hand them over to the authorities as a form of purgation and purification of the Church.

Just as Judas was a corruption within the original twelve apostles, so is this horrible corruption within the Church. As such, this must not be taken against the Church taken together—much so against the Pope. There are still thousands of priests out there who have given-up themselves to the missions, reaching far-flung places and away from their loved-ones, for the service of Christ; there are those whose lives have been characterized by constant communion with God, submitting themselves to the life of monasticism; there are those who serve remote parishes, giving their time, love and affection to the people who lives in poverty but clings on hope; there are priests out there who always listen to the people’s predicament, but have no one to confide to; there are priests out there who give everything that they have, but when all is lost, has nothing to hold; there are priests out there whose lives are for the people, but who die alone.

To conclude, allow me to say that I do not believe that Papal abdication is necessary, or that it is even possible. The last time it happened was more or less 500 years ago and I do not think the Pontiff would relinquish the throne. He should not. This kind of moment in the history of the Church and of the Papacy—for more than two thousand years—is one that strengthens and fortifies the rock upon which Jesus Christ placed the foundation of His Church. As the Great Apostle to the Gentile, Saint Paul would put it, Therefore I rejoice when I suffer infirmities, humiliations, wants, persecution—all for Christ! For when I am weak, then I am strong! (2 Corinthians 12:10).

GOD WILL ALWAYS BE FORGIVING TO THOSE WHO ARE SORRY OF THEIR SINS AND ARE BEGGING FOR HIS FORGIVENESS LIKE THE PRODIGAL SON AND THE REPENTANT THIEF. THE SIN OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ON THE OTHER HAND REFERS TO THE PHARISEES WHO HAVE HARDENED THEIR HEARTS. EVEN THE GOOD THINGS DONE BY JESUS ARE BECOMING EVIL IN THEIR EYES BECAUSE OF THEIR SINS. AND THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT MISTAKES EVEN THOUGH THE LORD JESUS HIMSELF WAS THE ONE TEACHING THEM THE VERY WORD OF GOD.

The global research department of HSBC predicts that the Philippines will leapfrog 27 places to become the world's 16th largest economy by 2050

Manila: The Philippines should take advantage of its greatest resource, Vice President Jejomar Binay said in a speech he delivered on Friday before members of foreign news agencies.

Speaking before members of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP), Binay said the best way for the country to prepare for the future is to develop its resources and the greatest if this is human resource.

"The global economic breakdown, which began in 2008 in the United States and Europe, has caused an irresistible shift of economic power—soft power—from the West to the East, from the Atlantic to the Asia Pacific. We must benefit from that shift," Binay said in a speech during the annual "Prospect for the Philippines Forum."

Based on studies by foreign private finance institutions, the future holds bright promise for the country. The global research department of HSBC predicts that the Philippines will leapfrog 27 places to become the world's 16th largest economy by 2050.

Binay said the country's young population, which economists in the past had said will be the country's disadvantage, will instead by its plus given where are equipped with the necessary training.

"Demography is destiny…By 2050 there will be more 65-year-olds and above than 15-year-olds and below in the developed world. The demographic winter will have become a full blown and undeniable reality in Europe, Russia, Japan and most of the developed world.

"The Philippines, with its younger workforce and its dynamic and still renewing population equipped with knowledge and technical skill, will have every unimpeded opportunity to forge ahead, without demographic problems of the west," the Vice President said.

Binay said given the resources, it is up for leaders of the country to maximise these advantage to secure the country's future.

He said the Philippines needs to protect and safeguard its population against the dangers that brought about the irreversible decline of the West. "We need to invest in our families, in the education, training, and health care especially of our youth and women; we need to equip them with sufficient skills and work habits to give them a big competitive edge in the global market."

"Tourism and information technology are only two of the primary industries we must develop to sustain our development and growth. But these two alone can create enough new and highly paying jobs to keep our best men and women with their families here rather than abroad, and put us head to head with our neighbours who are already far ahead of us in these fields. We only need to be single-minded in creating our own advantage," he said.

Aside from Binay, Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad also took part in the forum.

Native Americans overjoyed at news of first saint

WASHINGTON D.C., January 20 (CNA/EWTN News) .- The recent announcement that Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha has been approved for sainthood is generating great excitement among the Native American community.

"There's an awful lot of interest," said Monsignor Paul A. Lenz, the vice postulator of Bl. Kateri's cause for sainthood.

Msgr. Lenz told CNA on Jan. 19 that he has seen an "unbelievable response" to the news of the canonization, with reactions pouring in from all over the United States and Canada.

Msgr. Lenz, who previously worked in the Black and Indian Mission Office in Washington, D.C., said that Native Americans are extremely excited about having a saint come from within their own community.

Although the date for the canonization has not yet been announced, he said that multiple groups are already organizing pilgrimages to Rome to be present when the first Native American is officially elevated to sainthood.

When the date for the canonization is made public, Msgr. Lenz believes it will attract lots of attention in both the religious and secular media.

Known as "the Lily of the Mohawks," Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha was born in upstate New York in 1656. Her father was a Mohawk chief, and her mother was an Algonquin who was raised Catholic.

She was orphaned at age four by a smallpox epidemic that left her with poor eyesight and a badly scarred face.

After encountering several Jesuit priests, Bl. Kateri was baptized, despite objections from her family.

Her conversion caused her tribe to disown her, so Bl. Kateri fled to Canada, where she lived as an outcast, devoted to prayer and the Blessed Sacrament.

She died at age 24. After her death, witnesses said that the scars on her face disappeared, leaving her skin radiantly beautiful.

In 1980, she became the first Native American to be beatified.

On Dec. 19, Pope Benedict XVI formally recognized a miracle attributed to the intercession of Bl. Tekakwitha, clearing the way for her canonization.

The miracle involved a young boy in Seattle who was unexplicably cured from a flesh-eating bacteria that had disfigured his face and left him near death.

Msgr. Lenz said that the boy, who is of Native American descent, looked "worse than a leper."

However, he completely recovered after his family prayed and asked Bl. Kateri to intercede with God for him.

Msgr. Lenz explained that Catholic Native Americans have a strong faith and devotion to Bl. Kateri, whom they are familiar with from the Jesuit writings that have been handed down since the time of her death.

In his 35 years of working with Native Americans, Msgr. Lenz has found that they are almost "always a friend" of Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha.

"They're very proud" of her, he said.

VATICAN CITY, January 19 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Pope Benedict XVI launched a new foundation at the Vatican aimed at building a "philosophical bridge" between science and theology.

"I don't think most people necessarily see science and faith as being opposed but I do think there is confusion as to where to put faith and where to put science in their life," said executive director Father Tomasz Trafny.

"So the question for us is how to offer a coherent vision of society, culture and the human being to people who would like to understand where to put these dimensions Ã¢Â€Â“ the spiritual and religious and the scientific," he told CNA on Jan. 19.

The Science and Faith Foundation will be headquartered at the Holy See under the leadership of Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture.

The new foundation builds on the work of the STOQ project Ã¢Â€Â“ Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest Ã¢Â€Â“ which was created by Pope John Paul II in 2003. For the past 9 years it has promoted a dialogue between theology, philosophy and the sciences working in collaboration with the Pontifical Council for Culture and Rome's pontifical universities.

Their stated aim is to explore "the possibility of being believers at the dawn of the Third Millennium without renouncing scientific progress." Together they have initiated study programs and research projects as well as highlighting the fruit of their work through such vehicles as publications and conferences.

STOQ created headlines last year when helped broker the Vatican's first ever commercial agreement with an outside company in June 2011. The deal saw the Catholic Church and U.S. based bio-pharmaceutical firm Neostem come together to advance ethical stem cells research.

The new Science and Faith Foundation will now have its own "legal personality" in both Church and civil law.

"This is an important step," said Fr. Trafny, "because we are moving from being a simple project to merge learning between the pontifical universities in Rome to being a new entity recognized by the Holy Father as a reference point for all dialogue involving science and faith."

The dossier on Mother Riccarda Beauchamp Hambrough (1887-1966), and on Sister Katherine Flanagan (1892-1941) have been sent to the Congregation for Saints' Causes, the Catholic Herald reported Tuesday.

Both nuns were Bridgettine Sisters.

Mother Riccarda served as the director of the order for a time; while at the motherhouse in Rome in 1943, she helped to save the lives of some 60 Jews by hiding them in the convent.

Sister Katherine, meanwhile, was dedicated to opening Bridgettine convents around the world. She was the first prioress of new convents in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire; Lugano, Switzerland; and Vadstena, Sweden.

Rome-based News Agency Launches Freedom Campaign

ROME, JAN. 18, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The Rome-based AsiaNews agency has launched a campaign to appeal for the release of three bishops and six priests who are detained by the Chinese government.

The agency has written a letter to President Hu Jintao and the Chinese ambassador in Italy, Ding Wei.

"Their release could be a gesture of friendship and hope for Catholics and human rights activists, as well as a sign of true hope for the upcoming Chinese New Year," said the AsiaNews appeal, published Monday.

According to the agency, the bishops and priests have not been charged with any crime. Moreover, they have never been given a trial or been convicted by a court. In spite of this, they have been placed in forced labor camps, or have simply disappeared after being seized by the police

A day after the announcement of the campaign AsiaNews published an interview with the highest-ranking Chinese prelate, Archbishop Savio Hon Tai-Fai, secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

The Hong Kong native explained that requests by the Vatican for information on the whereabouts of the missing bishops and priests have been unsuccessful. The reply by Chinese authorities has simply been: "We do not know."

Clearly, he said, this indicates that the motive behind the disappearances is religious.

Prayer

In terms of what can be done to resolve this situation, Archbishop Hon Tai-Fai said that first of all we should pray for them. Then what is needed is to appeal to the Chinese government for their release, or at least the chance for a trial if they have done something wrong.

The witness of these bishops and priests makes me proud, the Vatican official declared. Their sufferings "have a great mystical value of salvation," he reflected, adding that not only are they models of heroism, but they will also make the work of evangelization fruitful.

The Vatican will continue to do all it can to help these prisoners, Archbishop Hon affirmed, saying that it is important to keep up the pressure on the Chinese government. He also called upon the underground Catholic community to forgive their persecutors, following the example of the martyr, St. Stephen.

Study sessions

The AsiaNews appeal comes amid continuing evidence that clergy in China face the constant threat of persecution. It was reported on Jan. 11 by the UCANews agency that Bishop John Wang Ruowang of Tianshui and some of his priests have been forced to attend "study sessions."

The bishop, who belongs to the underground Catholic Church, was secretly ordained with the Pope's approval last year. He was taken Dec. 30 from Taijing church by officials to a guesthouse in Tianshui city in northern Gansu province.

According to the report, people have been in contact with Bishop Wang and he has reported that he is undergoing "education and conversion classes." Since Jan. 4, seven diocesan priests have been taken away for this type of "study."

I was born on the 80's where INC & protestants were so very active in harvesting our innocent catholic brothers who has a weak faith especially when we are attacked on our sacred images. I just want to share my high school experience where I was being debated by my classmates (INC,SDA,Born again,Aglipayans,etc) during our vacant hours even being reported in the office for numerous debates. I thank God for He has equipped me with faith that strengthen me till now as I remember my sayings "I was born Catholic & I will die also as Catholic" for Jesus teaches One Faith,One God & One Baptism. Also as a Catholic, we must be obedient to the Church just as we are being obedient to Jesus. I would also like to share one instance during our debate when my born again brother challenged my faith to our Holy Mother. He asked me to bring an image of our Mama Mary the next day and promised to tear it into pieces on my presence. First I really felt sad and asked God's forgiveness to this man who wants to do sacrilege & disrespect. Then with God's help, I also challenged him to bring the very best picture of her mother the next day and at the same time i will tear it into pieces also on his presence. Then I saw on his face the regret of what he has done and the challenge did not pursue. I told him that day, if you really love your mother even unto her beautiful kodak picture, what more to love and give respect to the blessedness of Mama Mary's image which remind's us that through her flesh, she bore the God incarnated Jesus who suffered on the cross for our sins.

The closing this week of the year-long quadricentenary celebration of the University of Santo Tomas and the astounding report by the international bank HSBC that the Philippines would become the world’s 16th largest economy by 2050 by virtue of improving macro-economic fundamentals, its large population and rising education standards, should impress upon naysayers, many of them Filipinos themselves, that the country must be doing something right all along.

Because it was released in the run-up to Monday’s Chinese Lunar New Year, the HSBC report, “The World in 2050,” has been met with incredulity, with critics attributing it to the geomancy typical of the season. But the report merely confirms, albeit in bolder terms, the rise of the Pacific Century, which has been heralded close to a generation ago. Most of the forecast largest economies and “star performers,” like the Philippines, Peru and Mexico, are in the Pacific Rim.

When he was president (1992-1998), Fidel V. Ramos made “Philippines 2000”—that is, the rise of the country as a dragon economy—his centerpiece. He could at least now take comfort in the fact that his vision has been more or less reaffirmed by the HSBC during, propitiously enough, the Year of the Dragon.

But even if the bank says that Philippine growth would be the most dramatic since it would leapfrog by 27 notches from its current status, Filipinos want more. Why wait for 38 years before the Philippines?

The answer is that all of the nation’s struggles are part of its learning curve. What the Philippines should do is to embrace the present with all its challenges. To be sure, the report does not consider how the communist and Muslim conflicts, both incidentally some 40 years old now, may dampen Philippine growth.

Still, the Philippines holds the biggest promise, according to HSBC, because of its robust population growth. In a rare moment of technocratic candor, HSBC virtually declares that high population is an economic plus, rather than a minus. “The losers are the small populations and aging economies of Europe,” the report says. Emerging economies of Eastern Europe would do well in the next decade “before demographics prove to be a drag.” Japan, predicted to slide down further behind China and India, would see its working population shrink by 37 percent because of demographic winter. Russia may have the world’s largest territory and is set to become the 15th biggest economy in 2050. But it would be just a step ahead of pygmy Philippines and its declining population would shrink its GDP by 31 percent.

The task now is to invest in human resources. The Department of Education’s K+12 program (kindergarten plus 12 years of basic schooling) has an onerous price tag (P57 billion!), but the debate on the issue is healthy because at least it confirms that there’s a serious effort to reform basic education.

Meanwhile, higher education, according to a study by economist Edita Tan, professor emeritus at the UP School of Economics, suffers from “poor quality, undeveloped innovation system, and inequality of access.” The nation should take inspiration from UST, which is closing this week its year-long celebration of its 400th anniversary in pomp and pageantry, and is eager to enter what it calls its “neo-centennial.” As a cradle of higher education in the Philippines, UST is also the oldest university in Asia: it’s in fact the alma mater of the founders of Asia’s first republic. The recent ruckus over its grant of a doctorate in law to Chief Justice Renato Corona has hardly ruffled the feathers of the Dominican institution. After all, it has gone through worse: it has survived global tsunamis and the vicissitudes of history, such as the British invasion and the Seven-Year War, the colonial regime change at the turn of the 20th century, and World War II when the Japanese turned the campus into a concentration camp.

Today, with some 5,000 graduates performing well in licensure exams, UST is, according to the Commission on Higher Education, the biggest producer of Filipino professionals. Moreover, in her study, Tan has concluded that graduates of UST perform much better in state exams than other schools charging higher fees.

The marvel is that UST has been doing all of this quietly.

Confidence comes with institution-building: UST has become a no-fuss colossus, unflappable and sometimes impenetrable, but a truly Filipino institution. While the nation is looking forward to 2050, UST is looking forward to its fifth centennial in 2111. Its confidence should inspire us.

Analysis: Ageing, indebted Japan holds lessons for others

(Reuters) - An asset price bubble pops, hitting bank balance sheets and tax revenues. As growth weakens and the economy flirts with deflation, the real burden of servicing debt increases.

Companies race to pay off debt, further dragging down growth. Government spending takes up the slack. Monetary policy is akin to pushing on a piece of string, so even zero interest rates have scant impact. Population decline compounds the vicious circle.

That is a rough summary of Japan's plight over the past 20 years. Worryingly, it may also turn out to be the template for other mature economies, especially in Europe.

"In terms of nominal GDP growth, things are playing out in a very similar way to how they did in Japan," said Albert Edwards, global strategist at French bank Societe Generale.

In a presentation for investors in London, Edwards said world markets, too, were following Japan's "ice age" lead.

Corporate dividend and earnings yields tracked bond yields lower in the 20-year global bull market for stocks that ended with the dot-com bust in 2000.

Since then, equity yields have climbed even as bond yields have continued to fall - the very same trend that began in Japan 10 years earlier as the country's property and share prices started to fall to earth.

"It's exactly what happened after their bubble burst in the 1990s," Edwards, a self-proclaimed "perma bear" on equities, said. "Prior to that there was a very close correlation in equity and bond yields."

Bullish equity analysts point to this divergence between corporate bond and corporate earnings yields to argue that share prices are undervalued.

But Ajay Kapur, a strategist for Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong, disagreed. He said it was understandable why stocks were "cheap" by this measure.

"Equities are correctly worried about demographic turning points in almost every developed market and the potential impact on trend earnings growth, about excessive leverage, still-expensive property markets, heightened GDP volatility and more frequent recessions," Kapur said in a report.

DEMOGRAPHY IS DESTINY

Economists have generally played down the implications of Japan's prolonged stagnation for Western economies that are now wrestling with apparently similar balance sheet recessions. These occur when firms and households are forced to reduce their excess debt by cutting consumption and investment.

But Kapur said it would be a crucial error to dismiss Japan's malaise since 1990 as somehow reflecting specific national 'cultural' traits. Many other countries were displaying similar features.

In the next five years, all of the 18 developed countries for which Deutsche has property market data going back more than half a century will see a decline in their working age population ratios.

Sixty percent of them will show an absolute decline in the number of citizens of working age, something that Kapur said was unprecedented.

Also without precedent is the fact that all of the countries on Deutsche's radar have outstanding bank credit that exceeds 100 percent of GDP.

This combination of adverse demographics and high debt is lethal for property prices, which are still way overvalued in most countries in relation to incomes and rents, Kapur said.

It was difficult to dismiss this confluence of events.

"We probably need to go back to times of significant wars (and plagues) to see this sort of an environment, where leverage rose and working age populations declined," he wrote.

"This time is different."

NEW PECKING ORDER

Karen Ward, an economist with HSBC in London, agreed that Japan's demographic profile was probably at least as much to blame as aggressive deleveraging for its economic stagnation. Growth in the labor force began falling steadily in the mid-1980s and numbers started falling outright a decade later.

Of course, the working age population is just one ingredient in the growth mix. Still, Japan's experience shows that ageing will be a big drag on mature, heavily indebted economies that are already near the productivity frontier and thus have less scope for rapid technological catch-up.

The United States ought to benefit from steady immigration, demographers say. But by 2020, the workforce in western Europe will shrink by 2.4 percent, including a 4.2 percent contraction in Germany, according to a Boston Consulting Group study.

Looking further ahead, HSBC projects that Germany's working population will shrivel by 29 percent by 2050, Russia's by 31 percent and Japan's by 37 percent.

Over the same period, the population of many African countries will double. Nigeria will log a rise of 3 percent a year in its workforce - in contrast to a 1 percent decline in Russia and Japan - and will have as many people as the United States by 2050.

"Even if some of these countries remain relatively poor on a per-capita basis, they could see a dramatic increase in the size of their economies thanks to population growth," Ward said in a report.

On current projections, Pakistan will be the sixth most-populous nation by the middle of the century. And the Philippines could be the world's 16th-biggest economy, HSBC reckons.

"As the projections for working population stand, demographics alone could explain a large part of what are likely to be huge differences in economic performance in the coming years," Ward said.

NATIONAL Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Magtanggol Gatdula became the first casualty of a word war between President Benigno Aquino 3rd and the influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC, or Church of Christ) over the church’s alleged support for Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, it was suggested on Friday.

President Aquino said that he sacked Gatdula for insubordination in connection with the alleged kidnapping of undocumented Japanese citizen Noriyo Ohara and a supposed extortion attempt on her.

According to a well-placed source of The Manila Times, the church is quietly supporting Corona, since his defense team is led by retired High Court Justice and Iglesia member Serafin Cuevas.

Like the retired High Tribunal magistrate, Gatdula is also a member of the church.

The Times source pointed out that the dismissed NBI chief had tendered his resignation to Mr. Aquino and planned to leave his post in a graceful manner, but Malacañang decided not to accept it and fired him instead.
The Palace, the source said, wanted to humiliate Gatdula after Justice Secretary Leila de Lima held a press conference announcing his sacking over his alleged involvement in the Ohara case.

The President allegedly disliked the way the Church of Christ was supporting his enemies, whom he wanted to weed out from the government because they were considered barriers to his plans.

The soured relationship between Mr. Aquino and the church worsened after Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. of Iloilo province, the leader of the House panel prosecuting Corona at his impeachment trial in the Senate, disclosed that the Church of Christ was allegedly helping then-Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez—another enemy of the
President—to junk an impeachment complaint against her at the House.
Gutierrez was represented in the chamber by Cuevas at the time.

The relationship soured further when Mr. Aquino set aside the appointment of former Justice Secretary Artemio Tuquero to the Judicial and Bar Council and replaced him with Jose Mejia, a classmate of Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.

Tuquero—a known member of the church—was also shortlisted by the council for the Ombudsman post last year, but the President picked retired High Court Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales instead.

In explaining his reason for firing Gatdula, Mr. Aquino said also on Friday that de Lima had instructed the sacked bureau chief to transfer Ohara to the detention cell of the Bureau of Immigration (BI), but the former police general refused.

“BI was the proper venue. The order to transfer the person to the Bureau of Immigration was not carried out. That to me is insubordination. Now, at the end of the day, the head of the principal agencies will be a person who has our trust and confidence. The trust is no longer there,” the President pointed out.

i would like to ask, isn't it that religion and church are 2 different things? or are they one and the same? accdg to different dictionaries, religion is worship or set of beliefs while church is a congregation or body of believers or the whole Christian body. when jesus built the "church", was he talking about "religion?" medyo nalilito kasi ako pag sinabing religion or church. may mga born again kasi na nagsasabi na "religion divides" kaya wala daw silang religion. THUS, THE CLAIM OF THE BORN AGAIN THAT RELIGION IS NOT NECESSARY AND THAT THEY DON'T HAVE RELIGION SHOWS THAT THEY BELONG TO THE DEVIL BECAUSE THE TRUE CHRISTIANS HAVE RELIGION. VISIT TO THE SHRINE OF THE MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP IN BACLARAN

Last Januar 18, 2012 right after our plane landed at NAIA-3 I requested my eldest sister and our family driver to pass by Baclaran because I wanted to visit the Blessed Mother. My sister was delighted but at the same time sorrowful because the last time she visited the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin she was with my late mother. My mom suffered illness then and my sister prayed to God through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with a vow that when she gets well my sister will bring her to Baclaran to worship God and to thank the Blessed Mother... and she was cured.

On my part, the last time I visited the place when a dear student was having difficulty in his vocation and I passed by to the Shrine to ask the help of the Queen-Mother. As expected her prayers was indeed efficacious because my petitions was heard. And, now I need once again her special intercession... an intercession that only a Mother could give for her beloved children. Although my request is not yet fully granted at this point all my fears and burdens have been unloaded as if she had showed me the Day Star of Life.

It is no wonder that thousands of people are coming to this Shrine to pray and beg God through Mama Mary. We arrived at the shrine about 1:30pm our revered siesta time when the heat of the sun was scorching yet thousands of people are coming in and out with the Shrine itself filled to the brim.

"Remember O most gracious Mother that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly to you O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand. Dearest Mother despise not my petition but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen."

Church in Czech Republic Welcomes Return of Property

Half of What Communists Took to Be Given Back

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, JAN. 16, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The bishops of the Czech Republic have publicly thanked the Council of Ministers for a law that provides for the devolution of the properties of the Catholic Church and of other religious bodies.

On Wednesday the Web page of the Episcopal Conference of the Czech Republic reported that the bishops issued a public statement on the recently approved law of the liquidation of assets, which provides for the devolution of Christian churches and properties, and those of other religious bodies, confiscated by the state during the Communist period.

After the Communist Party took power in 1948 it confiscated all the properties owned by the various churches. Churches had to submit to state control and the government paid priests' salaries.
The Czech episcopal conference (CEC) thanked the Council of Ministers' support of the law that normalizes relations between the state and churches, and for the fact that there was no opposition to it by the parties that make up the governing coalition.

The CEC hopes that other measures will be taken in the same line, and that the law will be approved by the Czech Republic's parliament.

Prime Minister Petr Necas threatened to expel the ministers of the Public Affairs party -- who are in the government's coalition -- and eventually dissolve the government if the that party decided to impede the approval of the plan, which includes indemnity payments.

The party did not consider it timely to approve the plan, given the 0.1% shrinkage of the Czech economy in the last quarter of 2011, and the predicted lack of growth in 2012.

Vice Premier Peake, who is also vice president of the party opposed to the measure, said in a communiqué that her party would no longer oppose the plan and the executive finally approved it. She explained that, given the prime minister's ultimatum, the party sought the most responsible way to resolve a situation it considered absurd.

The plan, agreed by the government and 17 religious bodies headed by the Catholic Church, provides both for the return of just over half the property and for monetary compensation. The estimated value of the property is 75 billion koruna, ($3.7 billion), and the compensation, to be payed over a 30 year period is 59 billion koruna, ($2.9 billion).

The plan also provides for the end of the arrangement by which the government paid priests' salaries.

WELL, THIS ANONYMOUS IS STUPIDLY IGNORANT OF CATHOLIC UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF MARY. MARY LEADS US TO JESUS:

John 2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

SO, NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH JESUS BUT MARY TEACHES US TO LISTEN AND TO FOLLOW JESUS. SHE IS A MODEL OF CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP.

Tama ba naman yan? Akala ko ba ayaw sa paulit-ulit. Tapos nag-uulit-ulit nama. Ngayon ang hamon ko diyan sa anonymous ay ganito, saang doctrina ng Iglesia Catolika niya mababasa na itinatatwa natin ang sinabi ni Jesus na "no one comes to the father except through Me?" Ngayon, pag walang naipakita, aba namamaratang na walang basehan. Tama ka Father Abe, hindi natin itinuturo na si Maria ay daan sa Ama. Bagkus siya ang nagtuturo sa atin kay Jesus.
